To all whom it may concern: A
Be it known that I, Josnrrr LEDWINKA,
a citizen of the United States, residin at A provide a hinge structure of the nature referred to, which is specially adapted for use in connection with automobile doors.
Other objects of the invention will appear more fully hereinafter.
The invention consists substantially in the construction, combination, location and relative arrangement of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, as shown in the accompanying drawing and nally pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing,-'
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation, parts broken oil, of an automobile body, showing the application thereto, or to the door thereof, of a hinge structure embodying the principles of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in horizontal section through the hinge structure on the plane indicated by line` 2, 2, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a broken detail view in perspective, parts in section and parts broken out, showing a hinge structure embodying the invention.
The same part is designated by the same reference numeral wherever it occurs throughout the several views.
Generally speaking, a hinge structure embodying my invention com rises or includes two members, one designe to be secured to a post, for example, the door post of an automobile body, and the other to the member to be hinged thereto, for example, theA automobile body door, the two members of the hinge being suitably pivoted together, and the invention resides particularly in the means for detaching, securing or clamp ing the door post member of the hinge structure, the object being toprovide a clamp structure' therefor, which permits the easy insertion or withdrawal ofithe hinge member.
ln the accompanying drawing, 4 designates one member of the hinge structure, and 5 the other member thereof. r1`he member 5 is in the 'form of a curved arm, having one e'nd suitably secured to the door. window or other member to be hinged. ln the particular form shown, to which, however, my invention is not to be limited or restricted, the arm 5 extends into the box or casing 7, and at the edge of the window or door, and is secured therein by means of screws indicated at 8, or otherwise, as may be convenient. The projecting end of the curved arm 5 is connected by a hinge bolt 9, to the barrel or hub forming the outer end of the hinge member 4. rlhis hinge member 4 is in the form of a pin adapted to be inserted through the wall into the interior of the casing 10, constituting, for example,`the door post of an automobile body. Within the casing 10 is suitably bolted, spot welded or otherwise secured, a block member 11, through which pass bolts 12, the members of which indicated at 13, Fig. 2, are accessible from the exterior of the casing 10. Upon these bolts is threaded a clamp member 14, which by turning screw bolts 12 may be drawn towards the block 11, to constitute a clamp device. rlhe inner ends of the bolts 12 may be headed as shown in Fig. 2. The opposing faces of the blocks 11, 14, are correspondingly grooved to form a seat into which the hinge pin member 4 may be inserted. After the hinge pin member 4 is insertedbetween the clamp blocks 11 and 14, by turning up the screw bolts, 12, the hinge pin member 4 is securely-.clamped and retained in position. ln order to reniove the hinged door, window or the like, it is only necessary to back up on the screw bolts 12 to release the clam lock 14, therebypermitting the entire hinged structure to" be withdrawn from the post. 1t will also be seen that by the construction above described, the extent to which the pivot -pin members 4 project into the post or casing 10 may be varied as may be desired. v
'if desired, and in order to conceal the openings through which the hinge members v4, 5, extend into their respective casings 7,
10, suitable shoulders 15, 16, may be formed on said members to fit snugly up against the exterior walls of their respective casings.
Of course, it will be understood that each door or window structure will be supplied with as many hinges as may be required.
The hinge structure constructed as above described is not only simple and inexpensive to construct and apply, but affords a strong substantial 4support for the hinge member and permits desirable adjustment thereof, facilitates the application of the hinge mem` ber to its supporting post structure, and 'eady and easy detachment of the same thererom.
Having now set forth the objects and nature of my invention, and having shown and described a struc-ture embodying the principles thereof, what I claim as new and useful and of my own invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
` 1. A structure of the class described comprising two hinge members pivotally connected to ether, and a pair of clamping members, one eing relatively fixed and the other adjustable to and from the fixed member, one of said hinge members being disposed between and rigidly held by said lclamping members.
2. A structure of the class described comprising the combination of a hollow chamber, a pair of hinge members pivotally connected together, one of said hinge members being inserted through one wall of said chamber, and means, accessible and operable through another wall of said chamber, for clamping f said hinge member within the chamber.
3. A structure of the class described comprising a pair of hinge members pivotally connected together, a pair of clamping members, one being relatively fixed and the other adjustable to and from the fixed member, one of said hinge members being adjustably positioned between said clampi members, and means for rigidly securing and clamping said hinge member in its adjusted position.
d. IThe combination with a hollow post of a clamp member secured within said post, a clamp block cooperating therewith, a hinge :galassi pin adapted to extend into said post andrto be received and -releasably clamped between said clamp member and block, means accessible from without the post for adjusting said block to and from said clamp member, and a cooperating hinge member pivotally connected to said hinge? pin.
5. rlhe combination with a hollow'post of a clamp member secured within said post, a hinge pin adapted to extend into said post and to be received in said clamp member, means accessible from the exterior of the post for releasably clamping said pin in said clamp member, and a cooperating hinge member pivotally connected to said hinge pin.
6. The combination with a hollow post, of
clamp members arranged therein, a hinge member extending into the post to be received between and clamped by said clamp members, 'a door or other part to be hin ed, and a cooperating hinge lmember secure to the door and pivotally connected to the first named hinge member.
from the exterior of the post for moving said clamp members towards and from each other to clamp or release said hinge member.
8. Ahollow post, a clamp member secured within said post, bolts extending throu h said clamp member, and accessible from t e exterior of said post, a cooperating clamp block carried by said bolts, a hinge pin adapted to4 extend into said post to be received and releasablyclamped by said clamp member and block, a cooperating hinge member pivotally connected to said hinge pin, and
a door orother'part to be hinged, to which 95 said cooperating hinge member is connected. lin testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hand on this 27th dayiof June, A. D.,
