STITCH-REMOVING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom t may concern:
Be itknown that I, JASON Bo'rNAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at vMinneap'olis, in the countyof Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in vStitch- Removing Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in shoe repairing machinery and has for its 0bject to provide an extremely simple and highly efficient device for removing or pull ing stitches from shoe welts, after the stitches which connect the soles thereto have been cut, in preparing shoes'to be half soled. It is now customary to remove these stitches by hand, which is a very slow and tedious work.
.'Io the above end, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafterA described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings Fig. 1 is an inner face view of the invention;
Fig'. 2 is anv elevation with a portion of a shoe diagrammatically illustrated by means of broken lines and positioned against one i of the stitch removing devices to remove the stitches from the welt thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail view, in section, taken on the line 3 3 of' Fig. 1, also ldiagrammatically showing a shoe as in `Fui 2.
l`he numeral 4 indicates a revoluble shaft which may be assumed to be mounted on a shoe finishing machine. Mounted on the shaft i are two axially spaced 'wheels 5 and l6 in which the invention is embodied andA which wheels ,are alike, with thev exception that4 the former is of relatively large diameter and provided with dull teeth 7, and the latter of lsaid wheels is of relatively lsmaller diameter and provided with sharp teeth 8, for a purpose that will presently `ieppear.- 0n the inner face .of each wheel Application filed March 25, 1921.

speed as the shaft 4, they may be secured for rotation therewith, by set screws, not shown.
The peripheries of the wheels 5 and 6 are beveled toward the inner face thereof and the teeth 7 and 8 are formed thereon, and extend oblique to lines'radiating from the axis of said wheels. Preferably, the teeth 7 and 8, at their outer portions, are formed on 'a relatively dat bevel 11 and their inner portions thereof, are formed on a relatively steep bevel 12, as best shown in Fig. 3. It will be "noted 'that the outer and inner peripheral edges ofthe wheels 5 and 6 are rounded at 13 and 14, respectively, and that the beveled portions l2 of the teeth 5 and 6 are blended into the rounded edges 13. It will also be noted that the teeth 7 and 8 are made progressively deeper from the outer toward the inner faces, as shown in Fig. 3.
In the use of the invention, the stitches Z, which secure the sole of the shoe :Y to the welt thereof, are first cut therebetween, 4and thereafter, the s hoe is held so that the teeth '7 of the wheel 5 engage lthe transverse porstitches cut flush with the outer face of thev welt by the sharp teeth 8 thereof. The rounded edges 13 of the wheels 5 and 6 will not cut or damage the upper of a shoe in case said shoe is moved into contact with'the revolving wheel. By the use of this invention, stitches may be very quickly removed from the welt of shoes, either by pulling or cutting the same.
What I claim is:
1 A device of the kind described comprising a revoluble wheel having on its periphery circumferentially spaced. stitch removing teeth that are oblique tov lines-that radiate from the axis of the wheel, said teeth being arranged to be revolved'in respect to a-shoe welt and operative to'remove the stitches which connect the welt to the sole after said stitches have previously been cut.
2.` A device of the kind described compris- Sit ing a revoluble Wheel having on its periphery circumferentially spaced stitch removing teeth that are oblique to lines that radiate from the axis of the wheel and are dull, said teeth being arranged to be revolved in respect to a shoe Welt 'and operative to remove the stitches which connect the welt to the sole after said stitches have previously been cut.
3. A device of the kind described compris` ing a revoluble Wheel having a beveled periphery and eircumferentially spaced stitch removing teeth on said periphery, said teeth being arranged to be revolved'in respect to a shoe Welt and operative tof remove the stitches which connect the welt to the sole after said stitchesV have previously been cut.
4;. A device of the kind described comprising a revoluble Wheel having a beveled periphery and circumferentiallly spaced stitch removing teeth on said periphery, said teeth being progressively deeper toward the inner face of the Wheel.
5. A device of the kind described comprising a revoluble Wheel having a beveled periphery and circumferentially spaced stitch removing teeth on said periphery, the outer peripheral edge of the Wheel being rounded into said teeth, said teeth being arranged to be revolved in respect to a shoe Welt andoperative to remove the stitches which connect the welt to the sole after said stitches have reviously been eut.
6. Il; device of the kind described comprising a revoluble Wheel having a beveled periphery and circumferentially spaced stitch removing teeth on said periphery, the outer peripheral edge of lthe Wheel being rounded into the teeth and said teeth.. being blended into said rounded edge of the Wheel, said teeth being arranged to be revolved in respect to shoe welt and operative to re move the stitches which connect the Welt to the sole after said stitches have been cut.
7. A device of the kind described comprising `a revoluble Wheel having circumferentially spaced stitch removing teeth that are oblique to lines that radiate from the axis ot the wheel, the inner portion of said teeth being on a relatively flat bevel and the outer portions of said teeth being on a relatively steep bevel.
previously 8. A device of the kind described comprisbeing oblique to lines that radiate 'from the axis of the wheel, the outer peripheral edge of the wheel being rounded into said teeth and said teeth being blended into said rounded peripheral edge of the Wheel, said teeth being arranged to be revolved in respect to a shoe Welt and operative to :remove the4 stitches vvhich connect the Welt to the sole after said stitches have previously been eut.
l0. A device of the kind described comprising a re'voluble Wheel having on its pe. riphery eircumferentiallyspaced stitclrremoving teeth arranged to beerevolved in respect to a shoe Welt and operative to remove the stitches which connect the Welt to the cut.
ln testimony whereof l. afx my signature.
