NONCRAGKING COATING COMPOSITION AND ARTIFICIAL LEATHER MADE THEREWITH,

To (17? whom it may concern Be it known that I. James Emo'r Boom), of 'ilmington. in the county of New (astlc and in the State of Delaware. have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Noncraclting Coating Compositions and Artificial Leather Made Therewith, and do hereby declare that the following is a full. clear. and exact description thereof.
My invention relates particularly to coating compositions and artificial leather made therewith. in which oils are used which could not previously be used with advantage. owing to the tendency thereof to make the coated productcrack under the influence of comparatively low temperatures.
The object of my invention is to provide coating compositions and artificial leather made therewith. in which oils are used which could not previously be used with advantage because of their low fluidity or great viscosity at -the lower atmospheric temperatures. The previously treated oils. that is to say oils which have been blown. or oxidized by exposure to the air or oxygen. or polymerized. could not be used with advantage in coating compositions utilized in the making of artificial leather. as the use of such oils would almost invariably make the coated product crack when subjected to a temperature of 0 C. or lower and sharply bent or creased. This pro erty rendered ithe use of artificial leather made with oils of this character unsuitable for outdoor purposes, as for example in automobile upholstering. I have discovered that this is due to the low fluidity or great viscosity of such oils at these temperatures.
The object of my invention is, therefore, to utilize oils of this character by adding to the compositions containing the same constituents to increase their fluidity.
A further object is to add to such compositions non-volatile solvents having a great degree of fluidity at the lower temperatures to accomplish this end. I
Another object of my invention is to add to compositions of this character esters of the lower alcohols, such for example as methyl or ethyl. alcohol with the higher fatty acids. such as lauric. myristic and palmitic acids or oleic and ricinoleic acid.

'hile my invention is capable of embodimentin-many different forms, for the purpose of illustration I shall describe only certain forms thereof hereinafter. N
For example in carrying out my invention. I may proceed as follows:
(10th. split leather or other material may be coated in any suitable manner with one or more coats of a composition made in the following way: The composition may be comprised of one part by weight nitrocellulose, two parts by weight of blown rape seed or cottonseed oil, one partby weight of a non-volatile solvent having a high degree of fluidity at low temperatures such for example as the methyl or ethyl esters of the mixed fatty acids from cocoanut oil and about seven arts by weight of Volatile solvents comprising 5 parts by weight of ethyl acetate. and 3 parts by weight of benzene. It will be understood. however, that for the non-volatile solvents I may use any material having the properties herein referred to. and for example I may use for this purpose any of the esters (if-the lower alcohols with the higher fattv acids, but I prefer to use one or more of the esters of methyl or ethyl alcohol with the saturated fatty acids, such for example as lauric, myrlstic and palmitic acids, although the corresponding esters of unsaturated acids, such as oleic or ricinoleic acid may be used. Again the esters may be the corresponding esters of the mixed fatty acids from castor oil or of the mixed fatty acids of cottonseed oil. .By referring to such substances as non-volatile solvents I merely mean to state, however, that as to their solvent power they need only have the property of dissolving in the oil used in the composition, and of mixing with the nitrocellulose and volatile solvents present in the composition. Furthermore, it is desirable that these nonvolatile solvents be of such a character that under the influence of the lower atmospheric temperatures they will not crystallize out in the coating to produce a white bloom. stood that the quantity of nitrocellulose and volatile solvents present in the composition is such as to form a nitrocellulose jelly which is mixed with the other constit- Patented Apr. ill, 11922.

\Vhile I have described my invention above in detail, I wish it to be understood that many changes may be made therein withoutdeparting from the spirit thereof. Also, although in certain of the claims I have merely used the term blown oil instead of the term blown or polymerized oil, it is to be understood that the term blown oil has been adopted for brevity, and not to exclude polymerized oil; since by virtue of the present invention not only blown oil but also polymerized oil can be used in the coating and yet cold cracking of the coating be avoided. so that. from this point of view the oils are equivalents.
I claim 1 1. A composition comprising a nitrocellulose, a blown oil and a non-volatile solvent imparting flexibility in the cold and adapted to prevent coldcracking of the composition when in the form of a coating.
2. A composition comprising a nitrocellulose, blown cottonseed oil and a non-volatile solvent adapted to prevent cold-cracking of the composition when in the form of a coating.
3. A composition comprising a nitrocellulose, a blown oil and a non-volatile solventcontaining an ester of a lower alcohol with a higher fatty acid adapted to prevent coldcracking of the composition when in the form of a coating.
4. A composition comprising a nitrocellulose, blown cottonseed oil and a non-volatile solvent containing an ester of a lower alcohol with a higher fatty acid adapted to prevent cold-cracking of the composition when in the form of a coating.
5. A composition comprising a nitrocellulose, a blow oil and a non-volatile solvent containing esters of a lower alcohol with the mixed fatty acids of cocoanut oil adapted to prevent cold-cracking of the composition when in the form of a coating.
6. A composition comprising a nitrocellulose, blown cottonseed oil and a non-volatile solvent containing esters lower alcohol with the mixed fatty acids of cocoanut oil adapted to prevent cold-cracking of the composition when in the form of a coating.
7. A coating composition comprising a nitrocellulose jelly. a blown oil and a nonvolatile solvent imparting flexibility in the cold and adapted to prevent cold-cracking v of the coating.
8. A coating composition comprising a nitrocellulose jelly, blown cottonseed oil and a non-volatile selvent adapted to prevent cold-cracking of the coating.
9. A coating composition comprising a nitrocellulose jelly, a blown oil and a non volatile solvent containing an ester of a lower alcohol with a higher fatty acid adapted to prevent cold-c'acking of the coating.
10. A coating composition comprising a nitrocellulose jelly, blown cottonseed oil and a non-volatile solvent containing an ester of a lower alcohol with a higher fatty acid adapted to prevent cold-cracking of the coating.
11. A coating composition comprising a nitrocellulose jelly. a blown oil and a nonvolatile solvent containing esters a lower alcohol with the mixed fatty acid of cocoanut oil adapted to prevent cold-cracking of the coating.
12. A coating composition comprising a nitrocellulose jelly. blown cottonseed oil and a non-volatile solvent containing esters of'a lower alcohol with the mixed fatty acids of cocoanut oil adapted to prevent cold-cracking of the coating.
