J. F. MAURER.

I nit-if rials.
JOHN F. MAURER, 013 NEW DURHAM, NEW JERSEY.
BOX.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Jenn F. Mnunnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Durham, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved box more especially designed for containing milk bottles and the like and arranged to permit of conveniently carrying the box about.
Another object is to provide a box'which is simple and durable in construction and dapted to be shipped in a knockdown condition.
Another object is to allow of quickly and accurately assembling the box parts and fastening the same securely in place with the use of but a few nails or similar fastening devices.
Another object is to allow of safety stacking the boxes whether filled or empty.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying draw I ings forming a part of this specification, in
which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved box;
Figure 2 is a similar view of the metal retaining and carrying frame for holding the box parts in assembled position the frame also forming a handle for carrying the box about;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the sides of the box;
Figure 1 is a similar view of one of the ends of the box; and
Figure 5 is a similar View of the sectional bottom of the box.
The box in its general construction comprises a bottom 10, sides 11 and 12, ends 13 and 14, and a r ctangular metal frame 15. The bottom 10 is preferably made in sections, as plainly shown in Figure 5, with the middle section having cutout portions at the front and rear edges to form openings for dirt and other extraneous matter to drop out of the box. The sides 11 and 12 and the ends Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 11,
Serial No. 441,577.
13 and 1% rest on top of the bottom 10, and the sides 11 and 12 1it against the front and rear edges of the ends 13 and 1d. The bottom 10 is provided at the underside with a transverse groove 20 approximately at the middle of the bottom and into this groove 20 fits the bottom of the frame 15. The front and rear edges of the bottom are provided with notches 21 and 22 registering with the front and rear ends of the grooves 20, and the notches 21 and 22 are engaged by the lower ends of the sides of the frame 15. Each of the sides 11 and 12 is provided at its outer face with a groove 23 into which fits the corresponding side of the frame 15, and the top edges of the sides 11 and 12 are provided with notches 24- in register with the grooves 23 and into said notches 2 1 fit the front and rear ends of the top of the frame 15. By the arrangement described, the frame 15 holds the bottom 10 and the sides 11 and 12 against sidewise shifting and hence the several parts of the box are locked in place by the frame 15, the top of which forms a handle for conveniently carrying the box about. In assembling the parts of the box, the frame 15 is set in upright position and then the sections of the bottom are placed in position in the frame with the groove 20 engaging the bottom member of the frame and the notches 21 and 22 engaging the lower ends of the sides of the frame. The sides 11 and 12 of the box are next placed in the frame and seated on the bottom 10 and with the groove 20 engaging the sides of the frame 15. The ends 13 and 14; are next seated on the bottom 10 to extend between the sides 11 and 12 the ends thereof.
The ends 13 and are preferably provided with vertical tongues 25, 26 fitting into vertical grooves 27, 28 formed in the inner faces of the sides 11 and 12 adjacent the ends thereof. By this arrangement the ends are held securely in place but nails 30 or similar fastening devices may be driven through the sides 11 and 12 into the ends 13 and 14, and similar fastening devices 31 may be driven upward through the bottom 10 into the ends 13 and 14 with a view to securely fasten the ends 13 and 1a in position on the bottom 10 and the sides 11 and 12.
It will be noticed that the grooves 20 and 23 and the notches 21 and 2st are sufficiently deep to accommodate the thickness of the members of the frame 15 with a view to prevent the frame from projecting either at the bottom, sides or top. By this arrangement boxes of this type can be safely stacked.
If desired, a crate formed of longitudinal and transverse partitions may be fitted into the lower portion of the box for forming individual pockets for the reception of bottles singly.
The box shown and described is very simple and durable in construction and when the parts are in knockdown position they form a small bundle for conveniently shipping the box from one place toanother.
It will also be noticed that the box can be readily assembled and securely fastened in place by the use of but a few nails or similar fastening devices.
Having thus described-my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters resting on the bottom between the sides and having a tongue and grooved connection therewith, and a rigid rectangular metallic frame holding the parts assembled, said frame fitting in the grooves and notches of the bottom and sides and having its upper memberextending across the open top of the box and forming a handle therefor.
52. A knock-down box, comprising a bottom formed of a plurality of members having registering transverse grooves in their lower-faces at the center of length, the outer members being provided in their side edges with notches registering with the grooves thereof, sides resting on the bottom and having vertical grooves in'their outer faces registering with the notches of the bottom and notches in their upper edges registering with the grooves of thesides, ends resting on the bottom between the sides and detachably secured to said sides, and a rigid substanti ally rectangular metallic frame holding the parts assembled, said frame fitting in the grooves and notches of the bottom and sides with its upper member extending across the top of the box and forming a handle therefor.
