Be it known that l, RICHARD' V17. UHLIG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Arlington, inthe county of Essex and ft te of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which lthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriting machines and particularly to typewriting maohines in which the type strike rearwardly against the front of a platen, the platen being rotatably carried by a carriage which is shiftable upward and downward to support the carriage with the writing line of the platen which is in a plane in line with the axisof the platen in dierent planes, and it is the object of the invention to provide improved means to support the platen carriage in the normal writing position and to shift said carriage above the normal ff'riting position and releasably lock it in such position.
lt is another object of the invention to provide improved carriage shifting means to shift the carriage above or below the normal writing position and to releasably look it Ain either of such posit-ions.

ln the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings the operative parts are carried by a framework, designated in a general way by F, adapted to be supported upon feet 8. A carriage 9 rotatably supports a platen 10 and has a pair of longitudinally extending bars 11, 12 the inner edges of which have longitudinally extending V- shaped grooves 13. The carriage is mounted to have to and fro movement upon a support comprising a rectangular frame 14 having V-shaped grooves 15 in its front and rear edges to constitute with the grooves 13 in the carriage barsr 11', 12 raceways for balls 16. Fixed to the opposite ends of the supporting frame 14 are racks 17, 18 slidably engaging in guideways 19 in the framework and guideways 20 in supporting brackets 21 for the feet 8 fixed to the framework, and with which racks pinions 22, 23 mesh, said pinions being fixed to a shaft 2-1 journaled at its ends in the side members of the framework. Springs 25 connected at one end to the framework, as at 26, and to forwardly extending fingers or hooks 27 secured to the bottom of the carriage supporting racks operating to counterbalance the weight of the platen carriage and its support.
The carriage` support is maintained in normal writing position, as shown in Figure 1, by a toothed segment, which is in the nature of a double segment, rotatable with the pinions '22, 23, and shown as comprising a wheel or disk 28 fixed to the shaft 24 adjacent the pinion 22,7said wheel having equidistantly spaced pins, shown as three in number, to extend laterally from opposite ides of the wheel, as shown at 29 and 30. ln normal writing position of the carriage support the pin at the extreme right of the shaft 24, as viewed from 'Figure 1, Aabuts against the top of a tooth 31 at the end of a toothed portion 32 at the right of the wheel 28, as viewed from Figure 4, 'said toothed portion being formed at the rear end of a lever 33 pivotally supported, as at 34, in a transverse slot of a cross bar 39 and having a linger key 35 at the forward end. The top of the tooth 31 is in the form of an 'arcof a circle whose Center is in the pivotal support of the lever 33, for a pur'- pose to be hereinafter described. 1n this position of the carriage support the projecting portion 30 of a pin atthe left of the shaft 24 asviewed from Fignre 1 also abnts against the top of a tooth 36 of a toothed vportion 37 `formed at the rear end of a lever 38 and located at the left of the wheel 28 als viewed from yFigure 4, said lever being pivotarllysupported at 4() in a vslot ofthe cross bar 39 and having a finger key 41 .at its 'forward end. The top of this tooth 36 is also in the form of an arc of a circle whose center is in the pivotal support of the lever 38. The levers 33 and 38 are maintained in the Figure 1 position with the ends of the levers forward ofthe pivots 34, 40 in Figure 2,V the normal writing position of` the platen being shown in dotted lines in this figure, as for instance, to write capital .lettersfor the like, the forward end of the lever 35 is depressed by applying pressure to the linger key 35, as shown in Figure 2, thereby elevating the sector 32, the sector having. a slight free movement until the tooth 31 rides off of the pin 29 and the latter is engaged by the next `tooth 31 and thereby rotate the wheel'28 in thel direction lof the arrow (Figure 2) and therewith the shaft 24 and pinions 22, 23, the latter meshing with the racks 17, 18 moving said racks with the frame 14and platen carriage up-A ward, the upper movement of the carriage vsupport being limited by stops 60, consisting of the laterally bent upper end of a plate 61 secured to the racks, k17, 18,-engaging with the upper end wall of slots 62 in thesidemembers of the framework, the carriage support being supported during this movement by the engagement of the portion 29 of the pins with the tooth 31, as clearlyv .shown in Figure 2.

To release the lever 33 from the slide latch 53 to permit the carriage support to. again assume its normal writing position shown in Figure 1, or the platen in thel dotted line position shown in Figure 2, pressure' is applied to the finger key end of the lever 33 relieving the pressure of the ypin y54 on the slide latch 53 when the slide will. be returned by the spring 52 to the full line position shownin Figures 1, 2 and `3, and as pressure is released vfrom the finger l'key the leverx33 will be returned to the Figure 1 .position by its spring 43 and thereby the'carriage support to the normal writing position as shown in Figure 1. c
To shift the carriage support so that the writing position of the platen will be below the normal writing position, or from a position as shown in Figure 1 to theposition shown in Figure 3, or from the dotted line position of the platen shown in Figure' 3, as, for instance, to write numerals and other characters, the finger key end of the lever 38 is depressed against the action of its spring 44 thereby lifting the toothed level` end 37, said end having a slight Yfree movement until the tooth 36 rides off of the pin 29 and the latter is engaged bythe next tooth 36 thereby rotating the wheel'28 in" the direction of the arrow indicated in Figure 3, reverse to the movement imparted thereto by the toothed portion 32 of lever 33, and rotate with said wheel the shaft 24 and .pinions 22, 23, the latter meshing with the racks 17, 18 moving said racks with the frame 14 and platen carriage downward, the downward movement of the carriage snpport being limited by the engagement of stops 63, consisting of bending the lower ends of the plates 6] laterally, engaging with the lower end wall of the slots 62 in the side. members of the framework-,the car-v riage support being supported during this movement by the. engagement of the portions 30-of the pins w-itlithe sector 37. To release the lever 38 and permit the return of the carriage support to the normal writing position shown in Figure l, pressure is applied to the finger key end of the lever 38 relieving the pressure of the pin 58 on the slide latch 5? when the slide will again be returned to initial position by the spiing 52. j

Having thus described my invention, l claim:
l. 1n a typewriting machine, the combination with framework, of a platen carriage support including a vertical rack adjacent opposite ends thereof slidablyengaging guideways in the framework to have av limited up and down movement; arotatable shaft; pinions on said shaft tomesh with the racks; and a Vdepressible lever having a finger key at one end and the opposite end arranged'to co-operate with means on the shaft to maintain the shaftagainst rotation and the platen carriage in normal writ-ing` Position, and adapted to impart rotative movement to the shaft upon the depression of the lever tochange the writing position of the platen carriage.
2. 1n a typewriting machine, the combination with the framework, of a platen carriage support including` a rack adjacent opposite ends thereof slidably engaging guideways-in the framework to have a lim'- ited up and down movement; means including pinions to mesh with the racks operable to impart movement to the racks and carriage support; lever mechanism arranged to co-operate with said latter means to hold the pinions againstk movement' and thevcarriage support with the platen innormal writing position, and operableto actuate said means to rotate the pinions and thereby shift the carriagewith the platen to another writing position for the purpose specified.

In a typewriting machine, the combina tion with the framework, of a platen carincluding a rack engaging in a guideway in the framework to have a limited sliding movement; a pinion to mesh with said rack; a wheel having` laterally projecting pins connected to the pinion to rotate therewith; and a depressible lever having a linger 'key at one end and a toothed portion at the opposite end with which one of the wheel pins co-operewtes to lock the pinion against movement and maintain the rack with the platen in normal writing position, the depression of the linger key end of the lever causing the toothed portion to cooperate with the wheel pins to rotate the wheel and pinion to impart movement to the rack to shift the position of the carriage, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

a pair of depressihle levers, each .lever having a linger-key at one end and a toothed portion at the opposite end with which the wheel pins co-operate to lock the pinion and rack against movement with the platen in normal writing position, the depression of one of said levers causing the toothed portion thereof to co-operate with the pins at one side of the wheel to rotate the wheel and pinion and impart movement to the rack and ymove the platen above the normal writing position, and the depression of the other lever causing its toothed portion to co-operate with the pins at the opposite side of the wheel to rotate the wheel and pinion in reverse direction and impart downward movement to the rack and move the platen below the normal writing position; pins projecting laterally from the levers; and a spring influenced slide having a pair of notches to co-operate with pins extending from the levers to lock either of the levers in depressedv position with the rack raised or lowered and the platen either above or below the normal Writing position; said slide being,` releasaole from the lever pins through the influence of its springby depressing the levers, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
