IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINE TABLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,250, dated July 29, 1873 application filed October 10, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANCIS R..WOLFIN- GER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing-Machine Tables, of which the following is a specification:

The object of the present invention is to provide more convenient means for folding the machine down into the table or case, and to protect it from injury when so folded and also to provide a removable drip, which can be cleaned without soiling the case; and its nature consists in the novel construction of the drawer provided with a drip, as it is arranged and combined with the table, and in the combination of the drip with a drawer, folding hinges for swinging the machine inside or beneath the table, as hereinafter described and shown.

A represents the ordinary iron stand of a sewing-machine, and Z the piece by means of which the stand is connected with the folding table X \V. The usual opening from m to m is made through the main bed W of the table to allow the machine K and its bed -plate H to swing down through, and the ordinary hinged lea-f It is used to support the bed-plate H when in position for use, and to allow it to swing down. This construction, however, is not new, it having been before used on cases and tables made by me. Hinges G, of peculiar construction, are pivoted to the bed W at J, and are also pivoted to the bed-plate H at h, by means of which said bed-plate may be turned over back, so the machine, or main arm thereof, will rest on the bed W, as shown at Fig. 4, and so said plate will bear flat on the bed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and also swing down below the bed, as shown by dotted lines L K H, Fig. 1, Sheet 1, that part of the hinge, or edge thereof, shown at S, striking the edge of the hole through the bed W, and forming a lock to prevent the machine from swinging back too far. To the removable drawer B is secured a drip, E O D, which projects far enough onto the drawer at O to catch any oil falling from the machine K when folded down, as shown by dotted lines. As shown in Fig. 3, the drawer is partitioned off at n so as to form a separate compartment for the reception of such articles as are usually kept about machines; and if more spool room is required the space between the dripprojection E and drawer-front B can be utililized for that purpose. By means of this construction and arrangement the arm K of the machine and its attachments are protected from injury by the drawer, as shown in Fig. 1, Sheet 1. The bed W is provided with an extension leaf, X, hinged to it at P, so that when the machine is swung down below bed W the opening at is covered. In Figs. 1 and 2 the machine rests on the bed W in position for use.

To let the machine down, first elevate it, as shown in Fig. at; then turn the support It over, as shown in same figure. The machine is then turned down, as shown by dotted lines K H, Fig. 1, and the support It and leaf X closed. The drawer B is drawn nearly out before the machine is elevated or lowered.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1: The drawer B, provided with a drip, E O D, and combined with the table X W, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination ofthe drawer B, provided with a drip, with hinge Gr, table, and machine, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
