IMPROVEMENT lN DEVICES FOR HOLDING GAS-PIPE NIPPLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,244, dated July 29, 1873; application filed May 2, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI W. STooKwELL, of Ravenna, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Holding Gas-Pipe Nipples, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to the manner of holdin g the threaded end of a gas-pipe nipple while the other end is being threaded.
The drawing represents a longitudinal sectional View of the holder.
One end of the tube a is screwed fast in one end of the coupling 8. The threaded end of the nipple c is screwed into the other end of the couplings and against one end ofthe short rod or follower d, which slides freely in the coupling 8. The follower d is pressed back by the nipple against the end of the screw z', which passes through the tube c. There is a wheel, w, fastened on the other end of the screw i, by which it is turned in the tube a. The screw 1' is threaded from the wheel into the tube aa short distance, and the inside of this end of tube a is also threaded.
The holder is operated as follows The threaded end of a nipple is screwed into the end of the coupling 8 far enough to hold it; then, by turning the screw i in the tube a, it presses the follower d against the end of the nipple, and holds it from turning in the coupling while the other end of it is being threadstantially as and for the purpose herein setv forth.
