Fig. 9 is a. vertical sectional view of a unit package of superimposed rings. The machine for forming a unit package of superimposed articles embodying my invention comprises an intermittently movable carrier having a series of holders for the superimposed articles with means for actuating thesame topresentthe holders, carrying the superimposed articles, successively to forming mechanism for producing a locking joint in the end or ends of the binders and then to binder bending mechanism which acts to bend the binders first across the upper and lower faces of the pile of superimposed rings and then to complete the bending of the binder around the superimposed articles and to lock the ends of the binders together.
Any suitable form of binder may be employed. Preferably, however, the binder is in the form of a flatstrip consisting of or comprising pliable material which is capable of a permanent set when bent. A desirable binder consists of two narrow strips of paper secured together with a reinforcing wire therebetween, such as is illustrated in Patent No. 1,073,828, granted to \Vallin Sept. 28, 1913.
The preferred embodiment of the invention which is illustrated herein as a machine for forming unit packages of superimposed rings, such as rings for jars, comprises a base supporting a frame having a vertical web 2 having an inverted Ushaped upper portion 3 provided with horizontally disposed bosses 4 and 5 in. which are mounted the stems of the clamping and bending formers, and vertically disposed bosses 6 and 7 in which are mounted the stems or plungers of the formers which complete the bending and interlock the ends of the binders.
The frame is also provided with a vertical boss 8 which forms the journal for a shaft which supports a rotatable carrier or table 9 which is provided with a series. of holders, for the superimposed rings or other articles to be bound together, to form the unitpackage.
The holders comprise base portions 10 having semi-cylindrical sections 11 extending vertically, upwardly therefrom and spaced apart to provide slots 12 through which the' binders may be bent around the superimposed articles. Complementary groove binder supports 13 are adjustably secured adjacent to the ends of the semicylindrical sections of the holders. the same be-' ing spaced apart just far enough to receive preferably pins 15 extending upwardly therefrom, engage the inner walls of the rings and prevent them from displacement. The rings .mayv be applied to the holders manually or automatically and the binders likewise may be inserted in the binder supports 13 manually or automatically, and when inserted therein rest at their lower ends upon the upper face of the base 10.
The base 10 desirably is provided at the slots 12 with upwardly extending portions 16 which engage the inner sides of the ends of the binders to insure the broper positioning of the same alongside the superimposed rings and which also act as die members to form flanges upon the lower ends of said binders in a manner which will hereinafter he more fully set forth.
When the superimposed rings have been placed upon the holders and binders inserted in the binder supports, which are preferably located diametrically opposite, the holders are presented to'forming mechanism which crimps a groove in the upper end of the binder adapted to interlock with the flange which is formed upon the lower end of said binder.
The mechanism for thus crimping the upper ends of the binders comprises a bracket 17 which is secured to a rectangular boss 18 upon the U-shaped member 3 of the frame, said brackethaving integral downward extensions 19 and 20- to which are secured hardened dies 21 and 22 having recesses 23 and 24: of suitable form to provide a notch in the ends of the formers. The complementary die members comprise projections 25 and 26 secured to, or integral with arms 27 and 28 of bell crank levers one of which is pivotally mounted upon a stud 29 extendinglaterallyfrom the bracket 17 the other being secured to a shaft 30 which is mounted in suitable bosses on said bracket.
The bell crank levers are provided respectively with arms 31, 32 extending toward each other, the adjacent ends being connected together by a link 33. The die members 25, 26 are normally withheld from co operative engagement with the dies 23, 24 by a helical spring 34 which is secured at its ends to suitable studs upon the arms 27, 28 of the bell crank levers. In order to actuate the dies 25, 26 the shaft30 is provided with an arm 35 which is engaged by a screw 36 which is 'adjustablv seated in a bracket 37 carriedby a link 38 which is reciprocated by suitable mechanism. In the present construction the link 38 is actuated by the same mechanism which serves to reciprocate the upper bending and locking former as will hereinafter be more particularly described.
In the operation of the former the downward movement of the link 38 acting through the pin 36 rocks the arm 32 and shaft 30. thereby rocking the bell crank lever causing its arms 28to force thedie 26 into the complementary die recess 24 and thereby to crimp oneof the binder strips. As the shaft '30 is'rocke'd, the other arm 32jof the bell lever toward each other, thereby removing the dies 25, 26 and releasing the upper ends" of the binder strip. The carrier is then actuated to move the holder'from the station atcwhich the ends of the binder strip are crimp'edjto the binder applyin'gstation in which the binders are bent around the superimposed articlesjand the ends of-said binders locked together.
The mechanism for bending binders transversely acrossthe upper'and end faces of the superimposed articles or rings com prises a former, or preferably a plurality of formers, having means for clamping the. binders against the outer walls of the superimposed articles and bending means for bending the binders. g
; In thep'referred embodimentof thein venti'on illustrated herein two formers are illustrated as diametrically oppositely disposed in relation to the superimposed series of rings. One of these formers comprises a I head 39 having up'per' and lowerjaws 40, 41, adapted to pass respectively above the face] of the uppermost ring andbelowith'efl face of the lowermost ring, said jawsdesirably bei g provided at their ends with anti-friction rollers. A clamping plunger 4:3, adapted-to engage the outer walls of the'superimposed' rings, is located between the jaws 40, 4:1 and provided with a stem' 44; which extends axially into the shaft .42 .of the former and engages the end of a helical spring 45 located in the axial bore in said shaft L2. The spring 45 abuts at its opposite-end against a screw threaded plug 46 seated in the endof said shaft 42.

When the ends of the binders thus bent to embrace the upper and lower faces of the rings they are acted upon by upper and lower formers which complete thebending of the bindersaround the rings and secure theends thereoftogether.

The upper former comprises a head 85 which is fixedly secured upon a shaft 86 slidably mounted in the boss 6 and has secured to its upper end a collar 87 which is connected by a laterally extending stud S8 to the upper end of the link 38. The lower end of the link 38 is connected to the end of a lever 89 which is pivotally mounted upon astud 90 projecting from a suitable boss from the main frame. The lever 89 is provided intermediate of its end with p a stud 91 to which is connected the upper end of a link 92 having a slot 93 embracing the shaft 53 and its lower end provided'with a cam following roller 9% which engages a suitable cam groove in a cam. 95 which is fixedly secured upon the cam shaft 53.
The former heads 75 and 85 desirably may be provided with anti-friction rollers adapted to engage the binder strips as the formers advance to perform their functions.
The cams for actuating the upper and lower plungers are so designed that the lower plunger advances at first more rapidly than the upper plunger and bends the lower end of the binder alongside the inner walls of the rings so that when the upper former forces the upper end of the binder down: wardly the V-shaped notch, which has'been crimped in the upper end of the binder, will interlock with'the flange hrojecting from the lower end of the binder. The plungers then come closely adjacent to each other and pinch the l-shaped upper end of the binder upon the flanged lower end of the binder. The lower plunger then recedes and the upper plunger is forced downwardly sutliciently to bend the oint formed by the interlocking upper and lower ends of the binder downwardly alongside the wall of the rings as illustrated in Fig. 9.
Any suitable mechanism'may be employed for actuating thecarrier or tableintermittently to present the holders successively first to the binder crimping station and then to the binder applying station. In the preferred mechanism disclosed herein, in which the carrier is'illustrated as in the form of a table the intermittent movement is imparted to the table by a pawl and ratchet mechanism. In this construction the periphery of the table is provided with a series of notches 96 which are adapted to be engaged by a spring actuated pawl 97'which is pivotally mounted upon a stud 98 upon the end of an arm 99 of a bell crank lever which is pivoted upon a reduced portion of the hub I of the table 9.

It is essential that means shall be provided for preventing an overthrow of the' carr er reciprocating-mechanism and for re. tam ng the holders in exactly the right posltion in relatlon to the formers.

The lower face of the cam is adapted upon movement of the sector 103 outwardlythat is to the right as illustrated in Fig. 1-to engage. the upper face of the extension 118 of the pin 116 thereby depressing the boltllQ and releasing he table. The action of the sector in oscillating the rack carrying arm 101 thereby enables the pawl 97,'by engagement with the notch 96 in the periphery of the table, to rotate the table sufficiently to advance the holders from one station to the next. As the sector 103 is thus advanced the end of the pin 11S rides off of'the cam and permits the bolt. to be pressed by its spring 11 1 against the under-face of the table so that when the next succeeding notch is reached the bolt 112 will drop in it and lock the table against further rotation.
lVhen the sector 103 is oscillated in the opposite direction the upper face 120 ofthe Con quently a locking mechanisnr for the table; has been provided. The preferred form of locking mechanism illustrated herein comprises a bolt 112 which is slidably mounted 3033 113, the pin 116 being provided with actuated by the return movement of the sector.
Then. the sector 103 has moved beyond the pin 116 the pivoted end 118 thereof drops again to horizontal position where it is ready to be engaged by the face 119 of the switch cam upon the next forward movement of the sector 103. I
Any suitable meohanismmay be provided for rotating the cam shaft 53. Desirably, however, a stop mechanism is introduced in said driving mechanism in order to enable the operationof the machine'to be readily controlled. As illustrated herein the shaft 53 is driventhrough a worm gear l21which meshes with a worm 122 upon the shaft 123 of a suitable motor, means being provided for releasably connecting the worm gear 121 to the shaft 53-and for stopping the rotation of, the shaft 53 immediately upon dis-engagement from the worm gear. Suitable lever mechanism is provided for actuating the clutch and stop mechanism, but inasmuch as this particular stop mechanism is not a necessary part of the machine a de tailed description thereof is not necessary.
In the operation of the machine a uniform number of rings, such as a dozen, are
placed upon the holders by operatorsstandn ing 7 alongside the machine.
The same, or another, operator then drops a binderstrip intoeach of the binder supports at the sides vof'the holders The intermittent movement of the carrier eventually positions one. of the holders, withv the rings superimposed upon it, at the'crimping station whereupon the crimping dies are actuated; to form V- shaped notches in the upper ends of the binders. Further. intermittent movement of thecarrier brings the holders, with the binders thus formed, to the binder applying statio'nQ .W hen this station is reached the diametrically disposed, horizontally operating formersclamp the binderagainst the sides of' the rings. At thesame time the jaws advance tov bend the upper and lower ends of the binder. horizontally across the upper and lower faces of the rings. As thelowerjaws advance they engagezthe binder strip and, incooperation with the upwardly extending flange 16 of the. holder, form alateralflange ujponfthe lower endofythe binder. When the horizontally operatin'g formers have bent the ends of the binder to horizontal position wardly, causing the-'V -shapedv upper end to interlock with the flanged lower end ofthe binder. The upper and lower formers are then forced towards each other suiiiciently to squeeze the V-shaped endpo'rtion of the binder tight upon the flanged lower end-poi tion; The lower. former then rec'e'des and the upper former advances sufficiently to bend the inter-engaged ends of'the binders downwardly thereby forminga-locked seam such as is illustrated in Fig. 9.- j
It will be understood that the embodiment of the invention disclosed herein is of an illustrative character and isnot restrictive and that various modifications in construction and arrangement of parts may be made within the spirit ands cope ofmy invention.
It will also'be understood that whereas the invention is disclosed herein as comprising a machine 1n whlch the artlcles and the binde'rs are presented to the holders manually,
an automatic mechanism for effecting. this purpose may be utilized for this purpose.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim as new and desire to secure'by Let'- ters Patent, 1s:

5. A machine for forming a unit package or superimposed rings, comprising a holder for said rings, means for holding a binder adjacent the outer walls of said superimposed rings, a side former having a yieldably clamping plunger adapted to hold the binder against the outer walls of said rings, and jaws positioned to bend said binder across the upper and lower faces of said superimposed rings, upper and lower tormers operable to bend the end portions of said binder into engagement with the inner walls of said superimposed rings, and means for actuating said formers.
6. A machine for forming a unit package of superimposed rings, comprising a holder for said rings, means on said holder for supporting a binder adjacent the outer walls of said superimposed rings, means for form ing a notch in the upper end of said binder, a side former having a yieldableclamping plunger adapted to hold said binder against the outer walls of said superimposed rings and jaws positioned to bend said binder across the upper and lower faces oi said superimposed rings, said lower jaw being adapted, in cooperation with the holder, to form a flange upon said binder, upper and lower formers operable to bend the end portions of, said binder into engagement with the inner walls of said superimposed rings and to cause locking and inter-engagement of the flange and notched ends of said binder and to unite the same to form a locked seam, and means for actuating said formers.
7. A machine for forming a unit package of superimposed rings connected together by a binder having complementary interengaging end portions, comprising a carrier having a plurality of holders for said rings, binder forming means, binder applying means, means for actuating said carrier intermittently to present said holders containing superimposed rings successively to said binder forming means, and said binder applying means, and means for actuating said binder forming and applying means.
8. A machine for forming a unit package of a series of superimposed articles, comprising a rotatable carrier having a plurality of holders 'for said superimposed articles, means for applying a binder to said articles in a holder when the latter is in a predetermined position and means for actuat-ing said carrier to present said holders successively to the binder applying means.
9. A machine for forming a unit package of a-series of superimposed articles, comprising a rotatable carrier having a plurality of holders for said superimposed articles, means for applying a binder to said articles in a holder when the latter is in a predetermined position, means for actuating said carrier to present said holders successively to the binder applying means, including a pawl having means adapted to engage said carrier, and means for actuating said pawl.
10. A machine for forming a unit package of a series of superimposed rings, comprising a rotatable circular table having thereon a plurality of holders for said superimposed articles, means for applying a binder to the articles in a holder when the latter is in a predetermined position and means for rotating said table about its axis to present said holder successively to the binder applying means, comprising a pawl carrying arm pivotally movable about the axis of said table, a pawl carried thereby adapted to engage said table, a rack carried by said pawl carrying arm, a toothed segmental member engaging said rack, and means for oscillating said segmental member in co-ordination with the action of the binder applying means.
11. Amachine for forming a unit package of a series of superimposed rings, comprising a rotatable circular table having thereon a plurality of holders for said superimposed articles, means for applying a binder to the articles in a holder when the latter is in a predetermined position and means for ro rating said table about its axis to present said holders successively to the binder apalvin means com )risin a and carr ing w r 7 b a.

12. A machine for forming a unit package oi a series of superimposed rings, comprising a rotatable circular table having thereon a plurality of holders for said superimposed articles, means v for applying a binder to the articles in a holder when the latter is in a predetermined position and means for rotating said table about its axis to present said holder successively to the binder applying means, comprising a pawl carrying arm pivotally movable about the axis of said table, a pawl carried thereby adapted to engage said table,-a rack carried by said pawl carrying arm, a toothed segmental member engaging said rack, and
means for oscillatingsaid segmental memplying means, a switch cam mechanism carried by sald bolt and said segmental member adapted to cause the Withdrawal of said bolt upon movement of the segmental member in one direction and to permit said bolt to be retained by lts spring in looking engagement with said table during the movement of the segmental member in the other dlrectlon.
13. A machine for forming a unit package vof a series of superimposed rings, comprise mg a travelling carrier having a plurality of holders provided with diametrically oppositely disposed binder supporting means, means for imparting an intermittent movement to said carrier, binder applying means, and binder forming means positioned in front of said binder applying means, and
means operable by said binder applying positioned to receive the upper ends of binders for said superimposed rings, expansible die members positioned to cooperate with said stationary dies, and means for actuating said expansible die members.
15. In a'machine for forming a unit package of superimposed articles, comprising a holder for the superimposed articles having means for supporting a binder adjacent to the walls of said articles, a former having jaws provided at their ends with rollers adapted to engage the binder and force the same across the faces of the uppermost and lowermost articles, and means for actuating the former. 1
16. In a machine for formin'g a unit package of superimposed articles, comprising a holder for the superimposed articles having means for supporting a binder adjacent to the walls of said articles, a former having jaws provided at their ends with rollers adapted to engage the binder and force the same across the faces'of the uppermost and lowermost articles, and means for actuating the former, and a spring actuated plunger carried by said former adapted toengage said binder and hold the same firmly against the walls of said articles during the bending operation. In a machine for'forming a unit pack-i age of superimposed rings, comprising a holder for said rings, supporting means for binders disposed upon diametrically opposite sides of said holder, a pair'offormers disposed at diametrically opposite position with respect to said rings and having jaws adapted to engage said binders and bend the same over the upper and lower faces of said rings, plungers yieldably mounted in said formers intermediate of said jaws adapted to engage and clamp the binders against the walls ofsaid rings and means for actuating said formers. 1 V
