To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Srnvim KovAoavioH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blair Station, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pickheads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pickheads, and more particularly to a pickhead provided with removable terminal elements or points.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a pickhead provided with removable points so that, in the breakage or damage to these points, they can be readily replaced.
A further object of the invention is to provide simple and eflicient means for detach ably securing the points in position.
Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side view of a pickhead constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a section taken substantially on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal section through the means for securing one of the points in position.
Figure 4 is a side view of a hammer-head intended to be substituted for one of the points.
Figure 5 is an outer end View of the same.
Figure 6 is a side view of a blade intended to be substituted for one of the pick points.
The pickhead designated by the numeral 1 is of the usual shape and size and includes the central eye 2 adapted to receive the usual handle, and'providedat its opposite sides with outwardly projecting arms 3. Each of the arms 3 is provided, in its outer end, with an inwardly tapering frusto-conical socket which is adapted to snugly receive a correspondingly shaped member 4 projecting from the inner end of the point The outer end of member 4 is of less cross area than the inner end of point 5 thus leaving a shoulder 6 which is adapted to fit snugly against the outer end of arm 3 when the point is in normal position so as to effect a close con tact therewith. The member 4 is provided with a vertically extending tapering slot '7 which is adapted to receive a tapering wedge 8, this wedge also extending through alined slots in arm 3 at the opposite sides of the socket 3 thereof. After this has been done, the wedge 8 may be secured in position by a screw 9 which is threaded through the wall of arm 3, this screw having its inner end portion shaped to provide a conical element 10 adapted for engagement through a frusto-conical aperture extending through one side of member 4, the inner end portion of the conical member 10 fitting into a conical recess provided in wedge 8 for this purpose, as shown in Figure 2. This screw acts to efiectively secure the wedge against all looseness or play. By loosening the screw the wedge may be readily driven out of the arm 3 and member 4 thus permitting the point 5 to be quickly and easily replaced. In Figures 4, 5 and 6, I' have illustrated other forms of tools which may be substituted for the point 5 thus providing a combined pick and hammer or are, as may be desired. The hammer-head illustrated in Figures 4'and 5 and the cutting member or blade illustrated in Figure 6 are intended to be secured in the arm 3 of the head in the same manner as the points 5 are secured in operative position.
Having described my invention, what I claim is: V
1. A pickheadhaving an arm with a square outer end 'and containing. an inwardly-tapered socket, of rectangular crosssection, extending longitudinally inward from said end and entirely closed on four sides and also containing a tapered aperture extending between opposite sides of the arm and intersecting said socket, and a threaded aperture in one wall of the socket and at right angles to said intersecting aperture, in combination with a detachable point hav ing a square shoulder opposed to the square outer end of the pickhead arm and also having a tapered shank, of rectangular crosssection, arranged in the socket in said arm and in which is a tapered aperture adapted to register with said intersecting aperture of the arm and in Which is also a tapered aperture adapted to register with the threaded aperture in the arm, a tapered Wedge removably arranged in the apertures of the arm and point shank and having a seat in one of its sides, and a removable screw bearing in the threaded aperture of the arm and having an inner tapered end portion occupying the second-named tapered aperture in the point shank and disposed in the seat in the side of the Wedge. 2. The combination of a pickhead arm, a point having a shank, a Wedge, and a screw the shank being socketed and completely housed in the pickhead arm, and the wedge being socketed in both pickhead arm and shank; and the screw bearing in the pickhead arm and extending through a portion of the shank and into the wedge.
3.
