Monica, in the county ofLos Angelesand- State of California, the latter residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and usefulPump, of which the following is a specification. p
This invention relates topumps used for pumping various liquids and is particularly related to equipment for pumps used for pumping liquids containing-suspended solids of such a nature as to cause the rapid wearing away of the frictional surfaces of the pump.
In pumping liquids containing abrasive substances, the packing used to provide a seal between thepiston and the interior,
walls of the cylinder soon becomes worn to such an extent that the reduced efliciency of the pump necessitates the taking up of the packing, thereby causing a loss of .utility during the time consumed in adjusting the packing to overcome this reduced efficiency. Also pumps are allowed to operate'at a very periods of time because of the inconvenience of properly adjusting the packing.
It is the object of this invention to provide a piston which may be quickly adjusted from the exterior of the pump, thereby providing for the practically continuous operation of any pump to which it may be applied. It is also an object of our invention to provide a piston of this type which will be so constructed as to operate in perfect alignment within the cylinder of the pump. Other objects will become evident throughout the following specificatiom With reference to the drawing which is for illustrative purposes only:

13 and operates withinthe pumping cylinder 14. The piston 11 comprises essentially a head member 20 and. a cap member 21 adapted to slidably enclose the reduced portion 22 of the head 20. When the head 20 is mounted upon a tapered shank 23 of the rod 12, a threaded portion 24 extendsbeyond the central wall structure 25 of the head 20 and the head is secured upon the shank 23by lock-nuts 26. Rings 30 and 31', internally beveled 32, fit over the reduced end 22 of the head 20 and enclose the edges of packing 34. The cap member 21 is provided with a hub 35 which is internally threaded at 36, and an 'a reduced and threaded end 38 is screwe into the hub 35 and prevented from turning therein by a taper pin 39.. The threaded portion 24 of the rod 12 enters the internal thread 36 of the cap 21 and by turningthe shank 37 by means of the squared end40, which iS'p1'0- vided for the application of a wrench thereto, the cap 21 may be screwed forwardup'on the threaded portion of the connecting rod and any degree of pressure brought to bear upon the packing 34. v V
In the application of the piston 11 to the pump shown the shank 37 is passed through a stulfing box 50 upon which is screwed a gland nut 51, thereby making it possible to revolve the cap 21 and ti hten the packing without the necessity 0 dismantling the pump, and the pump -may thereby be kept working at its highest efliciency.
It'will be noticed that'the parts of which this piston is composed assemble in such a manner as to provlde perfect alignment and in the application of this piston to any pump there wil be no danger of scoring the cylinders due to" misalignment of the difierent parts.

We claim as our invention:'
1. In a pump, the combination'of: walls forming a cylinder; a cylinder head on either end of said cylinder; a piston rod pro jecting through one of said cylinder heads into said cylinder; a piston head carried on said piston rod; a cap threaded on said piston rod; packing between said head and said cap; and a shank rigidly secured to said cap and projecting through the other cylin- 65 as at der head, said shank constructed and arranged for operation to turn said cap on the threaded connection With the piston rod.
2. In a pump, the combination of: Walls forming a cylinder; a cylinder head on either end of said cylinder; a piston rod projecting through one of said cylinder heads into said cylinder; a piston head carried on said piston rod; a cap threaded on said piston rod inside said cylinder; packing between said head and said cap; and a shank rigidly secured to said cap and projecting through the other cylinder head, said shank constructed and arranged for operation to turn saidcap on the threaded connection with the piston rod.
3. In a pump, a piston structure comprising: a piston rod; a head secured axially on said piston rod; a cap threaded on said piston rod; packing between said head and said cap; and means extending outside the cylinder of the pump for turning said cap on said piston rod.
4. In a pump, a piston structure comprising: a piston rod having a threaded end;
a head on said piston rod; means threaded on. said threaded end of said piston rod for securing said piston head on said piston rod; a cap threaded on said piston rod outside said means; packing between said head and said cap; and means extending outside the cylinder of the pump for turning said cap on said piston rod.
