Slidably mounted on. the slotted porion oi" the shaft fl is a disk 21 lWhen it is desired to rotate the drum D l independently of the drum D, the rods 16 will be brought out of clutching action on the drum D by pushing the rod 23 inwardly, resulting in the disk 21 engaging the arms oit' the bell crank lever 15 to cause the de* .sii-ed inward movement of the rods 16. When pressure is taken off of the rod 23, the rods 16 will automatically .return into clutching engagement with the drum D under the influence of the retractile members or springs 18.
While ordinarily the members or springs 18 possess sufficient tension to cause the requisite outward movement of the rod 23 when relieved of pressure, I find it of advantage to employ an expansible member or spring 24- inserted within the outer end portion oi? the sleeve 5 and interposed between the inner end of the rod 23 and a stop intersecting the bore of the sleeve 5 adjacent its outer end.
The spider 6 remote :from the drum D is provided with an annular brake flange or wheel 26 with the peripheral wall or face of which coaets the arcuate brake shoe 27, t-he workingface of which being provided with a suitable brake lining 28. The shoe 27 extends upwardly and rearwardly and the lower end portion is pivotally engaged. as at 29, with the adjacent bracket 2.
The brake shoe 2T is constantly urged into contact with the brake flange or wheel 26 by the retractile member or spring 3() anchored at one end to the bracket 2 at a. point above the shoe 27 and at its opposite end portions to the pivoted end portion ol the releasing rod 31. The inner or lower end portion oit the rod 31 is pivotally enn gaged, as at 32, within a slotted lug 33 extending outwardly and laterally from the shoe 2T at a pointsubstantially midway its length. Upon depression of the rod. 31, the shoe 2T will be moved out of engagement-or contact with the flange or wheel 26 so that the drum D may be freely rotated.
Extending outwardly from the end of the drinn D provided with the Hangs or wheel 26 is a. stop pin 311 which operates to limit the rotation of the drum D in one direction. The lower portion of the adjacent bracket 2 provided with a pair of horizontally alined bearings 35 arranged inwardly of the bracket and which rotatably support a threaded shaft 36 which is held against endwisey movement in one direction by the bushing 33T fixed to the shaft 36 and contacting with the forward bearing and against movement in the opposite direction by the holding nuts 38 or the like engaged with the shaft `36V and reacting with the rear bearing 35. v39 denotes a plate in threaded engagement with theshaft 36 and which Aplate is provided with the angular end portionsl 40 engaged lwithin a trackway 41 whereby said plate is held against rotation around theshaft 36, so that upon requisite rotation of the shaft 36,'therplate 39 may be moved' as desiredv lengthwisevof the shaft 36.
`42 denotes a gravity pawl or dog having` its upper end portion pivotally engaged, as at 4 3, with the plate 3,9 and said dog or pawl42 is held against movementrin one direction past substantially a vertical center by the outstanding stop lug` 44 `carried, by the plate 39. The lower or free end portion of the dog or pawl 42 intersectsthe pathl of travel of the lug carried Vby the drum D, whereby the rotation of the drum D in one direction is limited yet permitting unhindered or unobstructed rotation of said drum D in the opposite direction.
To facilitate the maintenance of the drum D at its limit of rotation as afforded by the coacting lug 33 and pawl or-` dog 42, I arrange interiorly of the drum D the rolling weight 45 herein disclosed as an elongated cylindrical bar preferably .of metal and which has its end. portions engaging the inwardly disposed iiangesfa carried bythe spiders and between the inwardly disposed webs 46 comprised in the spiders.
Anchored by. the screws 47 or the like to the end flanges 1 of the base B are the'up-` standing end plates48 of requisite dimeiu sions and the forward margins of said plates atthe top thereof are provided with the downwardly. and forwardly inclined portions 49 defined by the inwardly disposed flanges 50. Secured to the flanges 50 by the screwsl or they like is an index member M.

The rod 31 extends in advance of the index member M and its extended or outer end portion has secured thereto a head or knob 56 to facilitate the depression of said release rod. Adjacentends of the shaft 4 and the rod 23 extend outwardly of an `end plate 4S with the rod 23 terminating out ward'ly of the shaft 4. n
The outer end portion of the rod 23 has secured thereto a head or lknob 57 to facilitate the imposition of pressure on said rod and the extendedportion of the shaft 4l has keyed or' otherwise affixed thereto an operating wheely or disk 58, the periphery of which being knurled, said disk or wheel providing means to facilitate the requisite rotation of rthe shaft 4. The sleeve 5 extends through and outwardly of the second end kplate 48 and keyed or. otherwise affixed `to the exterior portion of the sleeve 5 is the 4operating wheel or disk 59, the periphery of which being also preferably .knurled The panel 53 is of a length substantially coextensive with the combined length of the drums D and D so that visual access may be had through the panel 53 to the indicia or characters arranged upon the peripheries of the drums D andD and the .band 11.
Adhesively secured to the inner or under face of the panel 53` are the opaque strips 60 of cardboard or the like and which extend entirely `from the left end of thel panel 53 to a point slightlyiinward of the inner end or margin ofthe d-rum D. The inner or opposed edges of the strips 60 are spaced apart to provide an `elongated and narrow sight lopening 61 through which is adapted to be exposed indicia or characters alined Vlongitudinally of the 4drum D. The major portionv of 'the panel 53 overlying the periphery of the drum D is unobstructed so that visual access may be had to the indicia or characters `above and below Vthe sight opening 61 in order to facilitate thc adjustment of the drum D to position the desired indication or characterization in register with the sight opening 61. :l
The opposed marginal portions of the strips 60 at the right ends thereof are continued to provide the restricted extensions (32 of a length to extend acrossthe indicia or characters upon the periphery ofthe drum D and the spacebetween said extensions 62 constitutes `a continuation of the sight opening 61.

The right marginal portion of the lamination 07 is provided with a narrow field on which is imprinted or otherwise provided a series ot characters 69 extendingY entirely around the drum D in a circumferential direction and which characters are numbered consecutively from l to 305, each indicating' the number oit a day in a year, and which characters are equidistantly spaced and also spaced apart in exacty accordance with the spacings of the indications or characterizations 64 hereinbefore referred to. i
The. strips 60 above and below the sight opening 6l are also divided into tields` coinciding' with the fields arranged on the lamination 6T carried by the drum D and adjacent fields on said strips 00 are separated by the vertically disposed lines 70, ot any desired color but preferably red, and
which lines substantially coincide with the lines 0S. 'Each oi the fields oil. the upper strip 00 along' its lower marginal portion is provided with a series ol. equidistantly spaced indications or characters 7l numbered in the thousands consecutively trom ci000 to .9000.7 lEach of the :fields of the. upper strip 60 is provided with interest or percent-age indications 72 herein disclosed as ranging' successively from 5% to 8%. The upper marginal portion of the lower strip (30 in cach ot" the lields in vertical alinemcnt with the indications or characters 7l is provided with the indications or characters 73 indicatingr the rate or percentage otl interest 'torthree hundred and sixty-tive days ot the amount directly thereabove as det-ermined by an indication 7l.
Each ot' the fields ot' the lamination (Si carried by the drum D is provided with nine longitudinally spaced and circlnnlerent-ially disposed indications or characterizations il, said indications or characterizations beingr equidistantly spaced with adjacent characterizations spaced apart similar to the characterizations 09. Each series oi indications or characterizations 7-1 consecutively indicates the, amount ot'interest ot its field for the days ot` a year in connection with the sum denoted by an indication 7l.
Initially the drums D and D are connected or clutched together for unitary movement. with the drum D at t-he limit of its movement in one direction as afforded by the eoacting' lug B8 and pawl or dog 42. livhen in rthis position, the day indication P305 as comprised in the series oi charactcrizations 09, together with the indications or characterizations T4- in alinement therewith in a direction longitudinally ot' the drum D, are exposed through the sight opening' 0l. The band 1l. is also adjusted to brine' a prime line tti in register with the date on the drum D ot the first Sunday in the year.
To compute the interest due on a note, press inwardly the rod 23 to discniragge the rods l0 'trom the drum D and then rotate said drum D through the instrumentality ol the wheel or disk 59 to bring' the. date when the note was made Yt'or exposure through the sight openingr 0l. Then release `the rod S23 which will result in the drums D and D being clutched or locked 'tor unitary movement. Then rotate the shat't l through the medium ot the wheel Aor disk 58 until the date on the drum D on which the note will he paid is exposed througl'i the sight opening This will result in an indication G0 beine' exposed through the sight openingy 6l giving the exact number of days the note has run. Then to the left of the year column will. be exposed the indications ist to the left ot the, indications 60 exposed tlu'oug'h the sight opening Gl will give the interest on amounts from $1000 to $9000 at 5%. 6%, 7% and 0%. the decimal point one place to the left; tor $21.10, move the decimal point two places to the lett. and tor l, move the decin'ial Apoint three places to the left.
lt is to be understood that when the drum D is rotated, the releasing rod 31 is depressed to release the brake shoe 27 from engagement or working contact with the hraketlang'e 20. lVhen the requisite adjustment. ot the drum D, together with the drum D. relative to the sight opening' 0l has heen eilected, pressure is removed from the releasing rod 3l, whereupon the brake shoe will automatically return intoengagcment or working` action upon the brake flange or wheel 20 so that said drums will be held in desired position in order to make thc requisite computation.` After the computation has been made, further depression otA the releasing' rod Si will result in the drum To p 'et the interest on $100, move i D automatically returning to its normal position or withl the day characterizaton 365 as comprised in the series of indications 69 returning to its normally exposed position through the sight opening 61 and Which automatic return or rotation of the drum I) is effected by the rolling Weight 45. It is also preferred that the directions :for employing my improved computing derice be printed or otherwise imposed upo the lower strip GO.
It is .also to be understood that at the end `ot a year, the band l1 is partially rotated relativeto the drum D to advance the prime transverse line 66 one day. It is alsoto be understood that in the event ot a leap year, after the month of February passes, this band 1l. is again adjusted to advance one day 'the prime line 66, so that the requisite indication of Sundays may be provided.
From the 'foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a computing dcvice constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly ivell adapted for use by reason ot the convenience and ilacility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will. also beobvieus that my invention is susceptible of some changeA and modification Without departing :trom the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself te the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in prac` tice except as hereinafter claimed.

A device oit the class 'described comprising'two drums arranged endto end and rotatable about a common axis, means tor normally locking said drums for unitary rotation, an index member common to both ot' the drums, a stop pin extending outwardly from an end oi one of the drums, a threaded shaft supported adjacent said pin, a plate in threaded engagement with the shaft,
Y means for holding the plate against rotation with the shaft, a dog pivotally engaged with the plate, and means for holding the uga dog against movement in one direction past substantially a vertical center, the stop ol the drum upon rotation of the drum in one direction engaging the dog to limit the rotation ot' the drum in rsuch direction, said drum having unhindered rotation by the p'aWl in the opposite direction.

A device ot' the class described compris ing a. tubular shaft, a drum carried thereby, a second drum positioned adjacent an end of the Iirst'named drum and supported for rotary movement, a clutch mechanism carried by the second named drum and coactin g with the first ira-med drum and normally engaging said irst named drum to cause both of the drums toV rotate in unison, and a rod movable Within the tubular shaft and coacting with the clutch mechanism to release the same from the first named drum.
