Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 3, 1918. Serial No. 252,334.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ALFRED L. EUSTICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of. Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fuses. and particularly to the removable cartridge type of fuse.
The object of this invention is to simplify and improve the construction of the cartridge type of fuse, whereby the parts thereof'cooperate in a novel and efiicient manner to meet the various requirements for success ful commercial use.
This and other objects are accomplished by means of the construction disclosed by the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation. parts being in section, of my improved fuse.
Figure 2 is a detail side elevation of one of the two knife blade contact terminal members disclosed in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of a collar which is fitted over the narraw neck portion of the knife blade terminal.

The various novel features of my invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings, and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, it will be noted that I have provided a shell 15 formed of some suitable insulating material. such as fibre, in each end of which is fitted a ferrule l6, the smaller externally threaded portion 17 of which is screwed into the end of the shell 15. The larger externally threaded portion 18 of the ferrule 16 projects beyond the edge of the shell and receives a threaded cap 19 to be referred to later. The ferrule 16 is formed to provide upon the shell. at its outer end, a cylindrical end opening. This is defined in the illustrative embodiment by an inwardly extending circular flange 20, and this flange is provided with oppositely arranged notches 21, so that the shell may be said to have a notched cylindrical end opening. A knife blade terminal 22, at each end of the fuse, is provided with a reduced neck portion 23 having therein a hole 24 for the reception of a bolt or other means by which a fuse link 5 can be secured thereto. Surrounding the neck 23 of each knife blade terminal member 22 is a washer 26 having a rectangular opening 27 through which it fits the neck, and a cylindrical periphery through means of which it fits the cylindrical end opening of the shell. shoulders 28 formed on the knife blade contact 22. Also mounted over the narrow neck portion 23 of the contact terminal is a member 29 also having a rectangular opening fitting the neck 23, and provided with 0ppositely arranged lugs or shbulders 3 i, adapted to pass through the notches of the end opening. The members 26 and 29 may be formed integrally with each other. They are secured against longitudinal displacement upon the neck of the knife blade 22, as, for instance, by striking up fillets of metal at 31, as shown in Figure 5 of the drawings. hegvvasher 26 and lug bearing member 29 thi isiconstitute a shouldered collar'on the terminahand provide it with a cylindrical ortion having a circumferentially restricted shoulder or shoulders.

Since the disk 32 extends outwardly to receive the end cap. it will overlie and seal the joint between the cylindrical bearing faces of the terminal and end opening.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the end flanges on the shell. with which the terminals 22 interlock. may remain permanently with the shell in the disassembly ol llu terminals; that nothwithstanding assembl ol' the pair of terminals and the connecting 'l'usible linlc outs de the shell. they can be assembled with the fixed end llanges on the shell by passing them cndwise through these l'iangcs and through the shell while the blades are in the longitudinal plane of the notches of said (hinges. and until disks iii coincide with the flanges. and then interlocked against longitudinal dis placement by a partial rotation ol the blades: that in this turning movement. and during use. said disk 26 provides a cylindrical bearing for the terminal within the. flanges. and so centers and stabilizes the terminal; that the terminals are locked against rotation hack to the releasing point by means of locking disks 32. which have delinitc seating positions upon thr liangcs. and so insure alincment ot the terminal blades: in one and the same axial plane: also that the caps which hold the locking disks in assen'ibly are free to rotate for s rewing to and from position. and are threaded upon thq' same integral parts that carry the flanges; and. linally, that in the assembly the joints between the parts are etl'ectindy closed against escape of gas except through the notches 21. ducts 3G. and screw threads 13, which provide a long controlled passageway that relieves the gases of any harmful effects.
It is my intention to cover all inoditica tions of my invention falling within the. spirit and scope of the following claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a fuse, a shell provided with a cylindrical end opening having a notch in the cylindrical Wall thereof. a terminal member constructed with a cylindrical portion fitting the cylindrical end opening and having a circum ferentially restricted shoulder adapted to pass through the notch and to a position tor interlocking the terminal and shell longitudinally. a disk fitting a portion ot the terminal to prevent relative rotation between the disk and terminal, and an end cap clamping the disk upon the shell.
2. In a fuse. a shell provided with a cylindrical end opening having a notch in the cylindrical wall thereol a terminal. member constructed with a cylindrical portion fitting the cylilulrical end opening and having a circumtercntially restricted shoulder adapted to pass through the notch and to a position tor interlocking the terminal and shell longitudinally. a disk litting a portion of the terminal to prevent relative rotation between the disk and terminal and adapted to interlock with the shell to resist rotation. thereon. and an end cap securing the disk upon the. shell: said disk overlying the joint between the cylindricll surfaces of the terminal and the end opening.
