Description

E. NEVINS.
QUIANTITY REGULATOR. APPLICATION FILED OCT. 28. 1919.

mmsmivms, or EL PASO, waxes. otmnmr REGULATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28,1922.
Application filed October 28, 1919. Serial No. 334,014.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I ENNIS NEVINS, a citizen of .the United tates, residing at El Paso, in the county of El Paso and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Im provements in Quantity Regulators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to regulators especially adapted for controlling the passage of a conduitor pipe and aims to provide means whereby the flow through said conduit or pipe, will be automatically regulated by the fluid passing therethrough, so that after the regulatorhas been set for the passage of a predetermined quantity 1 of fluld, the flow throu h the conduit will be uniformly maintainec I Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, which is exceedingly simple of construction and effi-,'
cient in operation.
Other objects and advantages of the in-' vention will appear as the following descrip: tion is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which the figure shown is a sectional view through a regulator embodying the present invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail,
wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, there is illustrated at 10, a conduit or pipe, for the purpose of conveying air or other fluid from one point to another.
Located upon the outside of the conduit or pipe, are a pair of closed vessels or containers 11, the said vessels being spaced apart and connected by means of a pipe 12, which communicates with each of the containers. The pipe 12 is pivotally mounted, as shown at 13, upon a suitable support 13, which may rest upon the conduit 10, or upon any other suitable support.
One of the containers 11 communicates with one end of a flexible tube 14, at a point near its top, the opposite end of the said. tube being connected to and communieating with a static pressure pipe 15, which pipe in turn communicates with the interior of the pipe. The other container 11 communicates with a tube 16, through the medium of a flexible tube 17 the tube 16 extending within the conduit 10 and being provided with an open end 18.
Located within the conduit 10, is a valve 19, which is pivotally mounted, as shown at passage through the conduit.
-si te end pivoted to the 20, to provide a throttle for controlling the This valve is provided with an arm 21, whose end is pivotally connected to one end of a lever 22, the opposite end of this lever being pivoted to the .pipe 12, as indicated at 23.
The containers 11, which are adapted to contain mercury, or other suitable liquid, are balanced upon the pivot 13, their position determining the degree of opening of the valve 19. Air or other fluid passing through the conduit 10 will be permitted to flow through the said conduit and the amount determined by the position of the. valve. An excem quantity of air or liquid will cause an unbalanced'pressure in containers 11, due to the difference in static pressure in the pipe 15 and velocity pressure plus stat1c pressure against the open end of the plpe 18. This difference in pressure will cause a flow from one container to the other until the containers have tilted an amount necessary to operate the valve 19, until flow has been reduced to the amount for which the regulator has been adjusted, the said adjustment being made by any suitable means. The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, whatis claimed is:
A regulator comprising a conduit, a valve located within the conduit and controlling the passage therethrough, a member pivotally mounted above the conduit, said member comprising spaced liquid containers and a pipe connecting the containers, a static pressure pipe establishing communication between one of the containers and the conduit, a tube having one end extending Within the conduit and the other end connecting with the other container, an arm connected to the valve and a link having one end pivotally connected to the valve and its oppo container connecting pipe upon one side of the pivotal mounting of the latter, whereby movement of the containers will regulate the position of the ENN IS NEVINS.
