My present invention relates particularly to engines of the type disclosed in my Patents 1,212,391 and 1,315,192 j,wherein the functions of the engine are controlled kby a reciprocating piston valve.
One of the general objects of my invention is to improve engines'of this type and particularly to secure greater eiliciency and added power. n
An important feature of the invention is the provisionof the piston valve which controls the functions of the engine with a valve, which may be of the poppet-type and which will operate automatically as an auxiliary inlet for the gas.
Other features of the invention will appear as the specification proceeds.
In the drawing accompanying and form ing a part of this specification, I have illus` trated the invention embodied in engines of the type disclosed in thetwo patents referred to, but would have it understood that the invention is not limited in Vits adaptation to these two particular engines, and further,
that various modifications maybe made` without kdeparture from the spirit and scope ofthe invention as covered in the appended claims.

Mounted in the head of the piston valve is an automatic valve illustrated as a poppet lvalve`16, said Vvalve being normally held to its seat by a spring 17. f This automatic 'valve Irhave shown as mounted in and carried by a valve cage 18 carrying a seat for the valve 16 and sleeved into the upper end of the tubular piston valve.
The poppet valve cage is shown detachably secured in its seat in the upper end of the piston valve by bolts 19 extending between the lugs 20 on the opposite inner side vwalls of the tubular piston valve and lugs 21 provided inthe lower end of the valve cage. By this disposition of the securing bolts and lugs, the passage through the piston valve is not restricted to any appreciable extent and this arrangement also brings the securing nuts 22 on the lower ends ofV the bolt rods 19 into position where they can be readily reached through the inlet port inthevouter side of thepiston valve.
The second form of the invention differs from the one just described, principally in that the cylinder is provided with two intake ports 23 and 24 separated longitudinally, but both disposed toward the outer endV of the piston stroke.
- In the operation of the engines described,
on the vintake stroke of the piston the ports in the piston valve are brought into register with the cylinder ports and when the inside cylinder port is uncovered by the piston, the charge is admitted to the cylinder above the piston. 1 During the suction stroke and before the cylinder port or ports are opened by the piston, a partial vacuum is created in the. cylinder which opens the poppet valve and admits a supply of the intake gas directly into the head of the cylinder, such amount depending on the suction, the adjustment of the spring tension and other controlling factors, This action has the ef- Y feci;v olf relieving or partially vacuum, thereby taking some of the load 'oif relieving the the piston and also produces va more complete charge vin the cylinder, What I claim is:
