Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 7, 1920. Serial No. 415,385.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN S'rnNonL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, California, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Angle- Gauge Attachments for Paper-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification: Y
My invention relates to angle-gauge attachments for paper-cutting machines'and consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to make an angle-gauge attachment having two gaugeplates connected to a hinge block by a single pivot.
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of'a paper cutting machine provided with an angle gauge attachment in accordance with the principles of my invention, the view being taken looking in the direction of the-arrow 1 in Fig. 2. 7
Fig.2 is an enlarged horizontal'sectional detail on the line 22 of Fig. 1 and looking downwardly as indicated by the arrows.
Fig.3 is a front elevation of the gauge plates open to a straight line.
The paper cutter has a straight back gauge 1 provided 'with a plurality of vertical ribs 2, and the front faces 3 of the ribs 2 are finished to make the straight back gauge face against which a pile of paper is placed to make a straight out. The cutting table 4 extends forwardly from the back gauge 1 and when it is desired to. cutpaper at an angle other than a right angle my angle gauge attachment is applied to the back gauge 1 and extends forwardly upon the cutting table 4 behind the knife.
The attaching blocks 5 and 6 are U-shaped in plan'and the attaching blocks fit upon the cutting table 4: and have notches 7 and 8 extending from their back edges, each notch being adapted to receive a rib 2. Set screws 9 and 10 are tapped through one arm of each block to engage the ribs 2 and hold the blocks rigidlyin place. The attaching block 11 has a notch 12 extending from its rear face to receive a rib 2. Set screws 13 and 141 are tapped through the rear arms of the block 11 to engage the rib 2, so that the block 11 may be shifted laterally by loosening one screw and tightening the other.
Upper and lower hinge members 15 and 16 extend forwardly from the attaching block 11 and a pivot pin 17 having a handle head 18 is removably mounted vertically through the hinge members 15 and 16. The angle gauge plates 19 and 20 have hinge members 21 and 22 fitting each other and lit ting between the hinge members 15 and 16 and the pivot pin 17 extends through the hinge members 21 and 22 to hinge the gauge plates 19 and 20 to the attaching block 11.
The angle gauge plates 19 and 20 have finished faces 23 and 2 1 to receive the block of paper. Base plates 25 and 26 extend outwardly from the lower parts of the angle gauge plates 19 and 20 and rest upon the cutting table 4. The links 27 and 28 are pivotally connected to the base plates 25 and 26 by cap screws 29 and 30. The links 27 and 28 are curved in plan and have longitudinally extending slots 31 and 32 in their outer halves, and the outer ends of the links 27 and 28 rest upon the attaching blocks 5 and 6. 7
Wing head cap screws 33 and 34 are inserted downwardly through washers 35 and 36 and through the slots 31 and 32 and tap ped into the attaching blocks and 6, so that by loosening the screws the gauge plates 19 and 20 may be moved to bring the faces 23 and 24 into anydesired angles relative to each other and relative to the back gauge faces 3 or the knife, and then by tightening the screws 33 and 3d the angle gauge be cut to any desired triangular form.
Especial attention is called to the fact that the line 37 representing the plane of the face 23 is tangential to a circle 38 drawn concentric to the hinge pin 17 outside of the curved portions of the hinge members 15, 21, 22 and 16, and said line 37 crosses the radial line 39 near the outer end of the face 23, and that the line 410 representing the plane of the face 24 is tangential to the circle 38 and crosses the line 41 near the outer end of the face 24:, and the lines 37 and 40 always intersect outside of the circle 38, and that the inner end of the face 2 1 is nearer the pivot than the inner end of the face 23, and the neck 42 connecting the hinge member 22 to the gauge plate 19 is off-set outwardly to miss the inner end of the gauge plate 20, and the gauge plate 19 is longer than the gauge plate 20; so that the inner corner 43 of the paper will always be outside of the circle 38 when against the faces 23 andfZt.
Thus I have produced an angle gauge attachment for paper cutting machines having a straight back gauge including vertical ribs; the attachment comprising outer attaching blocks having notches adapted to receive the ribs, set screws in the outer attaching blocks to engage the ribs, a central attaching block having a notch to receive a rib, set screws in the central attaching block to engage opposite sides of the rib, angle gauge plates connected to the central attaching block by a single pivot, links pivotally connected to the angle gauge plates and bearing upon the outer attaching blocks and having longitudinally extending slots, and cap screws inserted through the slots and tapped into the outer attaching blocks; so that by manipulating the cap screws the angle gauge plates may be adjusted.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim. I
1. An angle gauge attachment for paper cutting machines having a straightback gauge including vertical ribs; the attachment comprising outer attaching blocks having notches adapted to receive the ribs, set screws in the outer attaching block to en gage the ribs, a central attaching block having a notch to receive a rib, a set screw in the central attaching block to engage the rib, angle gauge plates connected to the-central attaching block by a single pivot connect ing said platesto the central attaching block, the inner end of the face of one gauge plate being nearer the pivot than the inner end of the face of the other gauge plate and the neck of the second gauge plate being offset outwardly to miss the inner end of the first gauge plate, links pivotally connected to the angle gauge plates and bearing upon the outer attaching blocks and haring longitudinally extending slots, and cap screws inserted through the slots-and tapped into the outer attaching blocks; so that by manipulating the cap screws the angle gauge plates may be adjusted.
2. An angle gauge attachment for paper cutting machines comprising outer attaclr ing blocks, means for detachably connecting said blocks to the back gauge of a paper cutter, a central attaching block, means for detachably'connecting said block to the backgauge of a paper cutter, angle gauge plates connected to the central attaching block, a single pivot connecting said plates to the central attaching block, the inner end of the face of one gauge plate being nearer the pivot than the inner end of the face of the other gauge plate and the neck of the, sec- .ond gauge plate being ofiset outwardly to missthe inner end of the first gauge plate and means for adjustably connecting the angle gauge plates to the outer attaching blocks.
