Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom z'zlmay concern:
Be it known that I,-DAVI1) S. DAvis, a cit1-' zen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Turning Mechanism for Billets and the like, of which the following i a description.
My invention relates to mechanism for partially rotatinga bar or beam, as for example, in a rolling mill for turning the billet between the passes during the forming operation.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, reliable, safe and positive device of the kind described whereby a bar or billet is quickly, positively and automatically turned during its normal transverse movement from one pass of the forming rolls to the next.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings wherein like or similar reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts:

In the drawings my improved billet turning mechanism is shown in operative relation to the traveling, tilting table in a steel mill of the usual or any preferred construction.
The essential featuresof the turning mechanism are shown substantially the same as in my application for United States Letters Patent filed March 12, 1917, Serial No. 154.-
v135 in which 1 is the tilting table provided with rollers 2-2 for moving the billet longitudinallfy and with trucks 3-3 operating upon rails 4 for moving the table laterally to direct the billet 5 upon the table into the desired pass or groove in the rolls. A side guard 6 is rigidly attached to the frame of the table by suitable means and projects above the upper surface of the rolls 2 for controlling the lateral position of the billet on the table. The guard 6 is shown inclined upward and outward or away from the billet resting upon the table to facilitate the handling or moving of the billet and an adjustable guard 8 is also provided at the opposite side of the billet adapted to co-oper ate with the guard 6 to accurately determine the position of the billet upon the table.
In the form shown my improved mechanism comprises a clutch 1O pivotally mounted upon a fixed frame 16 positioned at one end of the table 1 and as shown comprises a main arm 11 extending approximately parallel to the surface of the table top with its free end slightly depressed to insure that a laterally moving billet will engage thearm intermediate its ends. The clutch 10v is provided with a second arm 12 extending at an acute angle to the arm 11 across the path of the billet and adapted to engage the upper advanced corner of the billet when the same is moved laterally against the clutch partially rotating the clutch bringing the arm 11 into contact with the lower horizontal surface of the billet thereby rigidly locking the billet and clutch together and preventing any further movement between them during continued lateral movement of the billet until the billet is turned thereby releasing the clutch and permitting the weight 16 attached to the free end of the arm 11 of the clutch by the cord 17 to draw the clutch back to the position shown in Fig. 1 where the adjustable stop 19 upon the frame engages the arm near its free end to maintain the clutch in the positionshown.
In this operation it is obvious that the turning movement is accomplished by em ploying the guard 6 to force the billet against the clutch 10 and that during the turning movement the guard 6 presses against the rear lower corner of the billet which must move upward during the turning operation. To facilitate this movement I provide a member 25 upon the guard 6 as near the end of the table 1 adjacent the clutch 10 as convenient. Atransverse slot or way 26 is provided in the member 25 and a slide 27 is positioned in the slot. the
' as to maintain the slide in position in the slot but permit its free longitudinal movement therein.
In the preferred construction a frame 28 provided with a plurality of rollers 29-29 rotatably mounted therein is positioned in the slot 26 betweenthe bottomof the slot and the back of the slide 27 to reduce the friction between the slide and the member 25 and facilitate the free vertical movement of the slide when forced against the billet during the turning operation. The slide protrudes sufficiently beyond the member 25 to engage the edge or side of the billet and prevent its engagement with other portions of the guard 6 the slide moving upward with its point of engagement with the billet during the turning operation and immediately dropping to the bottom of theslot 26 as soon as the billet is turned sufficiently to release the same.
In the form shown in- Fig. 7 the member 30 is formed substantially the same as shown in Figures 4, 5 and 6 and the slide 31 is similarly formed except that in this form the slide is formed to rest directly upon the bottom of the slot 32 with no intervening rollers or other friction reducing mechanism between them. The operation however is obviously substantially the same as in the form shown in Figures 4, 5 and 6.
Having thusdescribed my improvement it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in my invention as claimed, hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form or construction shown.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is; a
1. In abillet turning device a transversely movable roll table for supportin a billet, guiding means upon said roll tab eadapted to bear against and control the lateral position of a billet upon said table and a bell crank turning member in the path of said billet provided with means adapted when brought into lateral contact with said billet to rigidly engage the billet and prevent further lateral movement between them without partially rotating said billet, in combination with a vertically movable part slidable upon said guiding means adapted to engage the side of said billet and move with its point of engagement during the ,turning operation.
2. In a billet turning device aroll table for supporting a billet, guiding means upon said roll table adapted to bear against and control the lateral position of a billet upon said table and a bell crank turning member pivotally mounted in the path of said billet provided with means adapted when brought into lateral contact with said billet to rigidly engage the billet and prevent further lateral movement between them without partially rotating said billet, in combination with a vertically movable part slidable upon said guiding means and having a plane uninterrupted face adapted to engage the side of said billet and move with its point of engagement during the turning operation. 3. In a billet'turning device a roll table for supporting a billet, guiding means upon said roll table adapted to bear against and control the lateral position of a billet upon said table and a turning member pivotally mountedin the path of said billet provided with means adapted when brought intolateral contact with said billet to automatically and rigidly engage the billet and prevent further lateral movement between them without partially rotating said billet,means for adjusting the effective normal height of said pivoted member, in combination with a vertically movable part slidableupon said guiding means and projecting in advance thereof adapted to engage the side of said billet and move with its point of engagement during the turning operation.
