have invented Vcertain new and useful Improvements in Brooms, of which the `following is the specification.v

l/ly invention relates to'improvements in brooms and the like and the Object of the invention is to Adevise a broom in which the straw portion `and the handle are replaceable, independently, and which will be cheap and simple to manufacture.

My invention consists oi' a holder portion having a threaded oriiice in the upper end, a wedge member within the holder, a straw por tionadapted to be inserted into thel lower part oi? the holder below the wedge, a handle threaded at its lower end and engaging the threaded orifice in the holder, the lower end oit the handle (zo-acting with the wedge to 'torce it into the upper part of the straw portion tor securing it irmly in place in the holder all as more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

l is the holder portion having the threaded orifice 2. 3 is an unthreaded portion at the upper end of the orice for a purpose to be described hereinafter. 4 are upright ribs extending inwardly from the inner wall of the holder. 5 is a beaded portion at the lower edge of the holder. 6 is a ridge extending inwardly ltrom the holder wall. 7 is a wedge having the groove S extending around it near its upper end and having a hole 9l located centrally on its upper tace. l0 is the handle having the lower part threaded as at ll and provided with the centering pin 12 depending centrally from its lower end. 13 is the straw portion having the single row of stitching let.

After the straw has been inserted into the holder and the wedge 7 forced thereinto,

'since the single row of stitching 1li is located near the upper end, the straw flares out at the lower end thereof giving a good sweeping surface. Vhile the handle is being screwed down the pin l2 engages the hole 9 in the wedge and the ribs 4 form guides therefor' so that the wedge is maintained in a strictly central position as it passes into the straw thus ensuring that an equal pressure will be exerted on the straw at all points. By having the thread in the orifice 2 ending below the top of the holder there is less likelihood ol' breaking the handle as the same is of full cross section at the point where the greatest strain is exerted.

.ln assembling the broom the stop 6 ensures that the straw will be inserted exactly the proper distance into the holder.

ln the ordinary type of broom much longer and more expensive straw must be used than is the case with a broom made according to my invention for which short and cheap straw is quite suitable. A further advantage oi my broom lies in the cheapness ot manufacture as there is no expert workmanship required. In manufacturing the ordinary broom, anV expert broom-maker must be employed which is not necessary in making my brooms. Again I Jhirther reduce the cost ot manufacture by having only one row of stitching whereas the ordinary broom has several. This single row of stitching is required only to give the sweeping edge of the broom the proper flare.

rllhe greatest advantage of my broom is of course the feature whereby the straw portion can be renewed independently of the time and when the straw is worn out only a very small outlay is involved in making the broom as good as new.
