Be it known that I, FRANK Bassoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Farwell, in the county of Clare and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Pump Stop, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automatic switch trips and more particularly to a device for automatically stopping a motor driven pump when the pressure produced by the pump has reached a certain predetermined point. One of the objects of the invention is to provide a mechanism. associated with a pressure. regulator valve of the type commonly employed in water pumping systems whereby the mechanism will be actuated when part of'the valve structureis actuated dur ing the course of operation of the pump.
A further object-of the invention is to provide a weight operated switchtrip associated with the valve stem of a pressure regulator valve whereby, the weight, may be actuated whenthe valve stem is moved in one direction for causing the weight to be released to automatically actuate or open an electric switch in the circuit of the driving motor.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of this character which con- 7 sists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable andwell adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character areordinarily subjected. v i

Referring to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the pump A, which may be of any preferred type is driven by the electric motor B which in this instance, is provided with a driving belt C passing over Specification of Letters Patent.

In this connection it to be understood that the drive between the pump and motormay be of any other type, that is by gearing or chains and sprockets. In motor pumping systems'of this character, a pressure regulator valve D is provided and, in the illustrated type, the valveis provided with a vertically reciprocal valve stem E which is actuated by the varying the pump. p

A sliding weight 6 is mounted upon the arm 3 and is provided with a set screw to hold the weight at the desired point on the arm. The end of the arm 3 beyond the weight 6, is connected to a flexible cable 7 which passes over a pulley 8 supported by abracket 9 which'may be held in elevated position in any preferred manner. In the present instance, this bracket is connected to conveniently disposedpipes which are included in the system. Hangers 1O depend from the ceiling and support the. cable 7 whereby itmay be extended towardthe side wall of the building in which the system is installed. The wall of the building is provided with: a knifeswitch 11,- the handle of which is fastened to the end of. the cable which also passes over suitably arranged pulleys 12and 13 adapted to cause thecable to exert anioutward pull. on the handle of the switch 11 when the weighted end of j the arm 3 is dropped. Pivotally mounted on the base 2 is a hook 1 1 having a bill15 adapted to engage the free endof the pivoted arm 3 to'hold this arm downwardly against the action of the fixed to the cross-head G by extending one I of the rods H' through a convenient opening 19 in the arm and threading the nut J on the rod and in bindingcontact with the arm 17 as shown in Fig. of the drawing. It will be obvious, therefore, that this arm 17 will act to pull the pull wire .16 to disengage the hook 14: from the end of the arm C when the valve stem E is moved upwardly. The pull wire 16 passes over a pulley 20 mounted in a bracket carried by a support 21 which is disposed vertically and has its upper end secured to a portion of the piping as shown to advantage in Fig. l. The fastening of the support is accomplished by a yoke 22 which includes complementary members embracing the pipe and bolted together tOPGIIHlt mounting and demounting as desired.
The driving motor B is connected to the conductors 23 and 24. which lead to the switch as more clearly shown in Fig. 2. The contacts of the switch 11 are connected with means which leads from the source of current.
When the parts are assembled as above described, the weight V on the pressure regulator Valve will be set to cause an actuation of the valve stem E when a predetermined pressure has been reached. The movement of the valve stem will cause a pull to be exerted on the pull wire 16 which will cause the hook 14 to disengage the end of the arm 3, whereupon the'weight 6 will cause the opposite end of the arm to drop thus exerting a pull on the cable 7, which will throw the switch to open position, thereby stopping the motor and consequently the pump.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be consid cred the preferred or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement' and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A switch trip comprising a switch, a regulator having a plunger stem, a pivoted arm" having one end provided with a weight, a hook releasabl engageabl'e with the opposite end of the arm to maintain the weighted endin raised position, a flexible element connecting the said hook with said plunger stem, and a cable attached to the said weighted end of the arm and to the switch and adapted" to be pulled when said hook is released for dropping the weighted end of the arm.
2. A switch trip comprising a switch, a regulator including a movable plunger stein having a cross head attached thereto, a connecting arm fixed to the cross head and morable therewith when the plunger stem is actuatecha weighted arm having a pivot pro vided intermediate its ends, the weight being disposed at one end of the arm, means for releasably holding the opposite end of the arm, a flexible cable connected to said means and said connecting arm, and means "for connecting the weighted end of the arm to the said switch.
3. A switch trip coniprising a switch, a regulator having a movable plunger stem, a standard", an arm pivotally mounted upon said standard and having one end provided with a Weight, a hook releasably engageable with the opposite end of the arm to maintain said weighted end in raised position, a flexible element connecting the said hook with said stem, and a cable attached to the weighted end of the arm and to the switch and adapted to be pulled when said hook is released for dropping the weighted end of the arm.
4.. A switch trip comprising a trip, a regulator having a movable plunger stem, a standard having a plurality of apertures therein, an arm, a pin for mounting said arm in said apertures, a hook releasably engageable with the opposite end of the arm to maintain the weighted end in raised position, a flexible element connecting the hook with the stem, and a cable attached to the weighted end of the arm and to the switch and adapted to be pulled when the hook is released for dropping the weighted end of the arm.
5. In combination, a support, a lever piv" oted on the support, and provided with a weight adjacent one end, a cable attached thereto, a switch in engagement with the up per end of the cable and adapted to be opened when the weighted end of the lever moves downwardly, means for normally holding the lever in a raised position, a second cable attached to said means, and means for pulling the second cable so as to release the holding means.
