CHARLES S. WOODS, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
ICE CHIPPER.
Application illed June *113,
To all whomjt may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. Woons, a citizen of the United States, and a resldent of. Indianapolis, county of Marion, and vState of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful'Ice Chipper; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention 'relates to an ice chipping machine wherein-a heat insulated cabinet is adapted to receive a cake of ice and retain the same until such time as chipped ice 1s to be secured therefrom, and preferably such a cabinet is a refrigerator.
The `chief object of this invention is to provide a cabinet which is adapted to retain a cake of ice and provide said cabinet with ice chipping means and their associatedmechanism whereby ice may be chipped from the cake or mass, as desired, for use with a minimum of wastage and a maximum eiciency.
The main -feature of the invention consists in providing the machine with means for agitatingthe ice when it has become worn away by the chipping process. Wherein the ice is held in fixed position by the sides of the container or hopper either because of the particular size of the cake or by the wedging of a plurality of cakes, it will soon be worn away where it is chipped so thatl the chipping teeth on the revolving drum will cease to enga e the ice. It is then necessary to agitata t e ice so as to cause it to take a new position in the container or hopper wherein it will fall by gravity into engaging position with the chipping teeth.
o this end agitating prongs areprovided which take an inoperative position when the drum is being rotated in one direction for agitating the ice land will take an operative position when rotated in the o posite direction for agitating the ice and cause it to take a new position.
The full nature of this invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims. l
In the drawings Fig. 1 is ag front elevational view of a refrigerator embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlar sectional view taken on the line of ig. 1 and in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 3 is a sec- Specication of Letters Patent.
1921. Serial No. 477,114.
tional vview of the ice chipping means shown 1n Fig. 2;
` Patented Mar. 2.1, 1922.
In Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive there is illustrated the 'preferred form of the invention and the same shows a refrigerator 210 of the usual type having the usual doors 209 to provide 'entrance for articles of food and the like which are to be kept cool. 208v indicates a` door on the refrigerator through which ice is admitted to the ice storage (-hamber.- The usual door positioned beneath the door 208 is illustrated as being replaced by a panel (sol 207 which contains a drawer 206 in the base clogged the drum 216 may be reversed by thehandle 220 and on said Adrum there is positioned a plurality of agitating prongs 230 which normally are seatable in slots 231, v
but which upon reverse rotation of the drum..
are projected outwardly therefrom to move the ice and thereby break up the jam. The refrigerator, as is customary, is rovided with a drain 231 into which the rainings from the melted ice are discharged. The drawer 206 is provided with suitable perforations 205`so that the chipped ice retained therein will be retained in a relatively dry condition.
The invention claimed is:
1. In an ice chipping machine having a housing with an ice hopper therein, a chipping drum adapted to be revolved in one direction within said housing for engagingand chipping the ice therein, and means for agitating the ice and causing it to move into a new position so as to reengage said chipping drum when cut away and out of chipping engagement therewith.
2. In an ice chipping machine having a housing with" an ice hopper therein a chipping drum adapted to .be revolved in one direction within said housing for engaging and chipping the ice therein, and prongs pivotally mounted uponsaid drum and projecting beyond the chipping teeth thereof y for engaging and chipplng the ice so as to cause it to take a new lposition and reen age said chipping drum w en cut away an out of chipping engagement therewith.
3. In an ice chipping machine having a housin with an ice hopper therein, a chipping rum adapted to e revolved in one direction within said housing for engaging and chipping the ioe therein, and a pluralit of prongs pivotally mounted u on sai drum so as `to be inoperative w ile said
