SAW-FILING DEVICE.
Application filed Januar 5,-19'21. seriarno. 435,157.
To all whom it may concern 1 Be it" known that L'SIMQN HAUsLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Saw-Filing Devices, of which the following is a specification. 1 v
This invention relatesto saw filing devices and has for its objectto provide a device whereby a series of teeth may be filed or sharpened at the same time;
Thisob'ject I accomplish by employing a frame carrying a number of files or sharpeners properly spaced to correspond with the spacing of the saw teeth, and a guide adapted to be clamped upon the saw and slidably receive the file carrying frame whereby the latter when reciprocated manuallywill be guided and held in proper position to file the teeth. 7 I
One form which my invention may assume is exemplified in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 shows a plan view of a device embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 shows aside elevation of a file carrying frame,
Fig. 3 showsa sectional. view of'the complete device in position upon a saw, Fig. 4: showsan inverted plan view of the guiding device,
Fig. 5 shows a cross sectional view of'th'e file carrying frame. Fig. 6 shows an inverted plan view of one of thevei'tical guiding members;
Fig. 7 shows a side elevation ofthesame. Referring more in detail, to the accompanying drawings I show a file carrying frame A rectangular in form and made up ofparallel side bars 10, detachal'oly received in the ends of which are notched plates 11 to receive the corners of files 12, there being six files shown in the present instance. Overlying the files at each end'is an upper plate 13 carrying set screws 14 to clamp the files in place. Each of these upper plates 13 carries a handle 15 whereby the file carrying frame is reciprocated. The. plates 13 are removably held in place by screws 16 and owing to the detachability of these end plates 11 and 13 other plates maybe .substituted forthe purpose of accommodating a different number of files or files of a diflerent size or spacing.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pafefited :Mar, 14, 1922 To cooperate with the frame provide a guide B adapted-to be clamped in position upon a saw blade and slidably receive the file carrying frame and guide the same properly for filing the teeth. This guide B is formed of a. pairof bottom plates 17 spaced a slight distance apart and'adapted toreceive between them the' blade ofthe saw. Near each end of each of these plates 17 is a cross head-18 pivotally connected t-o'each bottom plate 17 by-means of a pin .19, and provided with averticalflange or plate 18 to guide theadjacent side of the file-carry-v ing' frame. 011s of the plates 17 has an extension 20 with each side of which cooperates an adjusting sc'rewf21 carried in a lug 22 depending fr'OmQthe adjacentcross head member 18. By slackening one ofthese adjusting screws and tightening the other the "cross heads can be swung angularly in either direction, the bottom plate 17 shifting longitudinally'afterthe fashion of a parallel ruler to accommodate this angularmove 'ment of the cross heads. In this way the vertical flanges 18 are linedupwith the cutting edgesof the saw teeth and when properly adjusted are clamped in this position by setting both screws 21. These screws being on opposite sides of the saw blade one will contact with the extension 20 and the other will contact with theblade of the saw and thereby they will a'ct'to clamp the {entire guiding device in place uponthe sawblade. 7 Each of the cross heads 18 has on its bot;
tom portiona leaf spring 23) fastened to the pla-teat its-inner end'and; cooperating near its outer end with" an adjusting screw 2.4..
Thereby the depth to which the guiding device settles upon the sawblade canbe 'adjusted.
On one of the bottom plates 17 issl idably mounted a gauge bar 25, which at its'outer end carries bifurcated lug 26 to straddle the blade-of thesaw. In this'liig is mounted a'clampscrew 27 whereby the gauge bar can be locked in position upon'the saw blade. The distance to which this gauge bar can be extended is equal to the distance between the cross heads 18. and in fixing the guiding device upon a saw blade the-gauge bar 25 in place so thatsubsequently if it is desired gauge bar will limit the movement of the is extended to its-full length and. fastened guide and insure a proper advance. The
side bars 10 of the file carrying frame are provided with downward extensions 28 at each end, which limit the longitudinal movement of the file carrying frame upon the guide B. The lower edge of each of the side bars 10 rides upon a projection 29 formed upon one of the plates 17 of the guide. The height of this projection will determine the depth that the file is permitted to enter the teeth. 7
In the operation of the device the frame A with the files in place thereon is fitted betweenthe vertical guide plates 18 and is reciprocated therein manually. The guide plates 18 being angularly adjustable are first set sothat the files will be inline with the cutting edges ofthe teeth. Preferably the guide plates 18 are provided on their inner faceswith balls 30, as shown in Fig. 7, to reduce the friction between the side plates of the fileocarrying frame and the vertical guide plates. After a series of teeth corresponding in number to the number of files in the frame A. have been sharpened the guide is advanced within the limits permitted by the gauge bar 25. This insures that the next adjacent series of teeth will be presented for filing without requiring the operator to check back on his work. The guide B having been reset the gauge bar 25' is then advanced to the limit of its movement and also clamped in position.
Various changes in the construction and arrangement of the several parts herein shown and described may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention as disclosed in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is-- 1. In a saw filing device the combination of a file-carrying frame, including parallel side barsand end pieces, the latter being arranged to detachably receiveand support a plurality of files,- with a guide comprising parallel bottom plates to straddle a saw blade and angularly adjustable cross heads on the bottom plates, said cross heads being 1 provided with vertical flanges forming guides for the side bars of the file carrying frame.
2. A saw filing device comprising a file carrying frame includin parallel side bars, end pieces between the si e bars formed with notches to receive the files and a handle to each end for connection with said side bars and end plates, each of said handles having a part to overlie the files and carrying a series of set screws whereby to retain the files in place in the notches on said end plates, in combination with-a guide adapted to be clamped upon the blade of a saw.
3. A saw filing device comprising a file carrying frame and a guide therefor, said guide including parallel bottom plates to receive between them the blade of a saw, a cross head near each end of said bottom plates pivotally connected thereto and having a vertical flange to guide the adjacent side of the file carrying frame and means for retaining said guide in place on the saw blade."
