Description

1. F, w. ERDMANN.
Cutter-Heads. -N0v 140,905. Patent edjulyl5-,l873.
AM. P/Iom-umaeRAPH/c ca Miommm's PROCESS) UN TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. W. ERDMANN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
lMPROVEMENT IN CUTTER-HEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,905, dated July 15, 1873; application filed October 5, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. W. ERDMANN,
- of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadel-' improvements. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation of one of the plates.
The improvements herein described have reference to that class of machines used for making cabinet moldings. The improvement consists in the combination, with a rotary cutter-head having thin feather-edged bits, of elastic cushions arranged between the head and said hits, as and for the purpose hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawingI have shown a cutter-head made according to this improved construction.
A shows the head, which is of cast metal, of which the wings a form a part, a being a central hole, through which the shaft passes. B B are the cutter-plates slotted at b b. O O are oblong iron plates secured to the outside of the cutters by means of screws 0 passing through the head. Back of each of the cutters is a flat piece of India rubber, c, on which said cutters rest, and through which the screws 0 pass. The screws 0 c fit in the slots 1) I), already mentioned, so that when it is desired to take off the cutters to sharpen them the screws may be loosened and the cutters drawn from between the plates 0 and cushion e or wings a.
The India-rubber cushion forms an elastic seat for the cutters, and allows them to give to a considerable extent, which I have found of advantage in operating; but where it is not deemed desirable to use this cushion it may bedispensed with. i
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the bit B constructed from a thin plate of steel furnished with a feather cutting-edge, of the rotary cutter-head A and elastic cushion e, arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN FR. W. ERDMANN.
