OTTO H. JOBSKI, 0F CLEVELAND,
OHIO, ASSIGNOR T0 THE STANDARD PARTS COMPANY, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION 0F OHIO.
BIM.
Azen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rims, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vehicle wheel rims and more particularly to tire-supporting rims of the so-called quick-detachable type which have a tire-retaining flange at one edge, and a tire-reta1ning side ring adjacent the other edge which is detachably secured to the rim, to facilitate the removal or replacing of a tire.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide simple and effective means for secui'ing the detachable upon the rim.
Other objects of the invention and the features of novelty will be apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a rim embodying my invention, the parts being shown in ring-securing position;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of thestructure shown in Fig. 1;
Figs. 3 and 4 are fragmentary side elevations of the side ring and the rim, respectively, shown in Figs. 1 and 2; and
ig. 5 is a cross-section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 11 indicates a vehicle wheel Vrim having a tire-securing flan e 12 at one edge thereof and being provide adjacent its other edge, with a circumferential channel or groove 13 to receive a 14, which is transversely split, as shown at 15, and has a base or web portion 16 thereon which extends inwardly therefrom and is adapted to beseated in the groove 13 in interlocking relation with the outer wall 17 of the groove. Adjacent its ends, the side ring 14 is provided with lugs 18 and 19 which extend inwardly from the web 16 and are provided with transverse slots 20 and 21, respectively, in which a portion of a latch member .is adapted to engage, to hold the ends of the sidering from radially outward motion.
At one point in its circumference, a portion of the rim is depressed, as shown at 22, to form an enlarged portion 23 of the groove side ring in position side ring `Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 7, 1922. 1919. serial No. 313,175.
13, such structure being preferably formed y shearing the metal at the inner edge of the groove 13, cutting away the wall 17 at the outer edge of the groove, to forni a lateral opening 24, and depressing the lmetal which forms the bottom of the groove, as shown in Fig. 4. rlhe enlarged lportion 23 of the groove is formed to receive the lugs 18 and 19 when the side ring is in seated position on the rim, the depressed portion 22 of the rim serving to partly enclose the lugs and protect them. A latch member 25 is pivotally secured to the rim by a rivet 26,
shown at 27, to permit it to engage around the depressed portion 22 of the rim. The latch member 25 is provided with an upwardly bent portion 28 which is adapted to close the opening 24 formed by cutting away the outer wall 17 of the groove 13, and a radially projecting tongue 29 is formed from the metal of the latch by shearing the metal through and bending it inwardly, as best shown in Fig. 1. The tongue 29 is adapted, in one position of the latch member 25, to engage in the slots 20 and 21 of the lugs 18 and 19, to lock the ends of the side ring 14 from radially outward motion, and thus hold the side ring in seated position on the rim. Adjacent the end of the latch member 25 remote from its pivot, the body of the member is preferably deflected away from the rim, to form a projection 30 for engagement by an operating tool, an opening 31, adapted to receive a screw driver or other instrument, being formed in such deected portion to further facilitate the movement of the latch member to or from locking position. The latch member 25 is also provided with a slight projection 32 thereon which is adapted to engage in an aperture 33 in the rim, to hold the member in locking position.
It will be understood that the side rin4 may be replaced on the rim in the usue manner, by first seating one end thereof with its lug 18 or 19 in the enlarged portion 23 of the groove 13 and then progressively seating the ring around the circumference of the rim, by slightly expanding the ring and lifting the web 16 thereof over the side wall 17 of the groove until the lug at the other end of the rim is seated. Since the side wall 17 of the groove 13 is cut away adjacent the point at which the lugs 18 and 19 are to be dental injury, while the side ring is in seatedy seated, it will be unnecessary toV li't the lu gs over the side Wall 17; and the depressed portion 22 ot' the rim, and the upwardly bent portion 26 oi" the latch member 25 will eilectively protect the lugs 18 and 1) :from aegiposition.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: Y Y
l. In a vehicle wheel oi' the class described., the combination oi a tire-carrying run having a circumferential groove, said rim being lthe Acombination or Vdepressed at one point at the bottom of said *groove to'form a recess, and having an open- 15:
ing at its edge communicating Withsaidrecess, a split side rmg-detachably seated on -s'aid rim having lugs adjacent its ends ef;-
.tending into said recess, and a latch member v'adapted in one position to cooperate with said lugs to vsecure said ring in seated position and having a part thereof adapted to close said opening7 when said latchrmember is in vring-securing position.
l2. In a vehicle Wheel of the class described., a tire-carrying rim, a K
split side ring detachably seated on said rim, and a latch member pivotally carried by Vsaid rim, the Y body or said `member being eut through and a portion thereof bent to form ua tongue, said tongue being adapted, in one Qposition of said latch member, to cooperate with the ends of said ring to secure said ring in seated position.
In a'vehicle Wheel oi' the class described, the' combination of a tire-carrying rim having a. circumferential groove at one edge thereof7 the outer'side Wall of saidgroove beingeut away at onelpoint to forman opening, a split Vside ring.V seated on said'iim and 'having lugsthereon adjacent its ends 'movable through said opening as said'ring is yseated on said rim, and a latch member piv-
