Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented a new and lmproved (lam-Holder Frame, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to passenger and freight elevator equipments and particularly to the installing, equipment and adjusting of the cam or cams that actuate the limit switches, and the speed controlling or gradient switches in places where such switches are used and form or constitute an integral part of the electrical devlces and their correlation to the elevator mechanism, and my said invention more specifically provides a means, in the nature of an improved frame structure upon which to mount, hold and adjust the cam or cams that coordinate the limit switches and such other switches which function to interrupt the travel or speed of the elevator car and regulate its gradient with reference and conformity to its properly approaching and stopping at the floor levels or at the predetermined points at the top or bottom. of the hatchway or at the final limits of the travel of the ele vator car.
Primarily, my invention seeks to provide a cam holder frame of the general character mentioned that can be installed at a relatively small expense, 1s positive in its action and in which the adjusting features are especially designed for accurately placing the cams, vertically or laterally, with respect to the car, to suit the desired requirements for coengaging the switch stops or members disposed within the path of the cam travel and'in which the parts are capable of being easily and expeditiously adjusted for accurate timing contact with the stops, as conditions may require the cams to be projected from the elevator car.
"With other objects, purposes and special application of my invention in view, which will be hereinafter fully outlined, my said invention is fully stated in the following detailed description and specifically mentioned in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring now to the details of the drawings, in which like numerals and characters indicate like parts in all. of the figures, although I have illustrated my invention as 7 showing the same applied to an elevator cage and cooperative with roller controls for the limit switches located above and below the limit of travel of the said cage, it is to be understood my invention is not restricted in its use to elevator apparatus, such as indi cated. but may be utilized wherever it may be applicable, that is. where careful adjustment of cam shoes for engaging cut out switches or other like elements is required, since the primary object of my invention is to provide holder frame on which to mount and adjustably aiiix a cam or cams, the holder frame being especially designed so that the combination of the several elements that constitute the frame, make the said holder frame adaptable to all needs or requirements of gradient switches and limit switch installation.
Referring now more particularly to Flgmembers cooperative therewith, the cam ures 1, 3, 4; and 5 of the drawingmthe holder frame therein shown can be readily and easily aiiixed to any quarter or section or the elevator car, and when so required, the said frame can be rigged 111 any suitable position at the top or bottom of hatchways, and in either fitting the cam or cams to the hatchway at the dey to allow for securing sired adjustments required.
The holder frame in the complete makeup, as shown in Figures 1, 3, 1 and 5, comprises an angled bar 1, one face or leg 10 of which has two sets of aligning elongated slots 20, one set (two) of such slots being at each end of the leglO, and at each end of the said leg 10 of the angle bar 1, is located a small angle bracket 3, which, intpractice,
maybe an integral part of the bar 1 'rivetted or otherwise made fast thereto, and each of the brackets 3 has a centrally located aperture 30, the reason for which will presently appear.
The side face or leg of the bracket 1- has an elongated slot d at each end thereof and a number of apertures lO located in longitumy invention, as shown in the aforesaid YFigures 1, 2, 4c and 5, is more especially de si ned and provided in order that the upper cam section which coordinates and actuates .the switch or switches in the top part or'sectlon of the hatchw y, with reference to the top landing or limit o1 the cars travel upward, can be adjusted. orreadjusted inc ependently of and without disturbing the lower cain section. and conversely, the lower cam section or member which coordinates and actuates the switch or switches in the bottom part or section of the hatchway with. reference to the bottom landing or limit of the cars travel downwardly, can be adjusted or readjusted without interfering with or disturbing the upper cam section or member,-hence either'oi the two cam sections may be independently shifted, up or down in the manner presently explained, while leaving the other cam section or member intact.
Each camsection is fired to its respective holder frame end by means of a square headed bolt 6, the head of which engagesa countersunk notch 60, when. the cam is of wood, to prov de for the said bolt comlng tiush with the cam surface and thereby produce a smooth contacting surface through the full length of the cam face for engaging the roller contacts of the limit switches or cut 1 outs. 7
'Eachcam section is connected to the holder frame portion 1 for longitudinal adjustment along the said frame portion and aforesaid primary said adjustment ofthc cam is effected by an adjusting rod 1.4- whose inner end has an eye 15 through which the threaded shank 62 of the bolt 6 passes and which is held in operative connection with the said bolt shank by nut and washer fittings 16, as shown.
The adjusting rod 14: has its, threaded shank projected through the ap'ertured end bracket 3 and the said rod may be readily shifted through, the bracket to bring the cam shoe to the desired longitudinal adjustment along the holder bracket 1 and held to its adjustment by adjusting nuts 17 and 18, which engage the rod 14 at each side of the bracket 3, as is best shown in Figure 1.
The means so far described, provide for adjusting the cam shoes or members along the angle bracket 1 of the holder frame, such adjusting means allowing for a final close or accurate setting of the cam shoes after the holder frame shall have been primarily adjusted, either laterally orvertically with respect to the elevator car or hatchway with which my cam holder frame devices may be cooperatively combined.
For supporting the holder frame, also for connecting it with the specially designed primary anchor bracket, affixed to the elevator car or to the guide post, and tor conveniently efiecting both lateral and vertical adjustment of the holder frame with respect to the car or hatchway and the coordinating parts, I provide a pair of what 1 term anchor links 1919', one of which is shown in adapt the link for being secured to the specially designed anchor bracket 19 by means of two tie bolts that pass or take through the holes 19' and 19 in the shank or stem end of the link 19 and throughcorresponding holes in the shank or stem end of the anchor brackets 19, which is especially provided for being atlixed to the elevator car, the elevator guide post, or to the side of the hatchway according as the installation designed. or lay out may require.
The end or portion ofthe anchor link 19 opposite to the shank or stem end having the connecting holes 19 and 19 has an elongated slot 2 1 to provide for the reception of a clamp bolt 25 which passes through the elongated slot 4: in the corresponding end of the side member of the bar 1 and through the slot 24: in the bracket or link member 19, a,
bolt 25 tending to clamp the cam carrying member 1 to any of the vertical. adjustments along the anchor links or brackets 19, it being understood that the bracket portion of the cam holder may be readily adjusted along the slotted anchor links 19 and made fast to the adjusted position by the same bolt 25 that secures the cum holder at its laterally adjusted positions.
To positively secure the cam holder or angle bar to any of its lateral adjustments with respect to the elevator car or hatchway, to which my cam holder frame may be applied, retainer devices are provided, the said devices being in the nature of a pair of strap'irons 28, one for each anchor link or bracket 19.

By reason of the peculiar arrangement of the parts so far described and as clearly shown in the drawings, a simple, easily applied and effective means is' provided for adjusting the cam holder or angle frame 1 laterally to and from the 'car or the hatchway to which my holder frame is applied, and for locking the said holder bar 1 to its laterally adjusted positions along the an chor links or brackets 19 as against accidental displacement or becoming loosened under ordinary usage of the holder frame.
Furthermore, the parts shown and so far described, also provide for effecting a primary adjustment of the cam carrying or holder frame or bar 1 in the vertical direction of the elevator car or hatchway and along the anchor links or members 19 and also to hold the said bar securely locked to any of its vertical and lateral adjusted positions.
Thus, while a simple, convenient and readily manipulated. means is provided for effooting the primary adjustment, of the cam holder bar 1., a further or accurate adjustment of the cam shoes or members lengthwise of the bars, up or down, as conditions may make necessary, is also provided by the threaded rods that join with the outermost ones of the bolts secured to the cam member and which pass through the outermost ones of the elongated slots 20 in the outer face of the bar 1, it being understood the adjustment of the screw rods is effected by the nuts 17 and 18 that engage the inner and outer faces of the apertured end brackets 3-3, as is clearly shown in Figure 1.
In the modified showing of my invention, illustrated in Figures 3 and 7, the same basic arrangement of parts is embodied as appear in the preferred construction, the said modified arrangement differing from the said preferred construction in that the angle bar 1 is provided with only one set (2) of elongated slots 20 for the reception of a pair of the adjusting bolts 6 that secure a single section or cam shoe and, in this latter arrangement, the same means or parts is utilized for effecting the vertical and lateral adjustment of the frame 1 with its single cam section or shoe as is provided for the same purpose for effecting the vertical and lateral adjustment of the angle bar 1 provided with the two cam sections or shoes.
From the foregoing description taken in, connection with the drawings, the complete construction, the manner of effecting the desired adjustment of the cams, with respect to the elevator car or hatchway, and the, advantages of my invention. will .be readily apparentto those familiar with electrically controlled elevator installation.
While the modified form of holder frame, shown in Figures 3 and 7, is more especially designed to be rigged or installed and used at the top and bottom of the hatchway, respectively, in places where the limit switch (or other switch) is located or installed on the elevator car, hence the obvious need or advantage of the two cam section holding frames shown in Figures 1. 2, i and 5 and "its installation, under cmiditions where stop motion or gradient switches are used, in connection with the final limit switches at the top and bottom of the hatchway, the obvious need of a one piece cam holder frame is also apparent, when it is rigged at the top and bottom. of the hatchway in cases where the limit switches, or other switches or cut outs are placed or installed directly on the elevator car.
Among other advantages, in the provision of a cam holder frame such as hereinbefore described and shown in the drawings, is that, when the two cam sections or shoe equipment is installed on the elevator car ticular function and purpose; conversely in case where the limit switch or other correlative switch is installed on the elevator car and hence travels up and down therewith, the coordinating holder frame and its fixed cam must necessarily be rigged in a fixed position, respectively, at the top and bottom of the hatchway with reference to the position, function and purpose of the said cams.
The essential feature of my invention which should be here again stated, is the provision of a holder frame on which the cams have adjustment and means for adjusting the holder frame relatively to the elevator car or the hatchway, that remains the same in all cases of installation and.

to therebyshift the cam or cams as desired, 1 up or down, on the holder frame; adjust the brakes, if need be. correct the electrical defects, if any, then try out and check up and r in case the results are not right or do not suit or meet the desired. requirements, repeat or continue the adjustments as stated until the particular parts involved or effected, coordinate the cam adjustment and reciprocable function to eventuate the desired gradient of the elevator car stoppage at the floor level or at any other predetermined point above or below the said floor level at at the top and bottom landings.

It is to be understood that the construction, application and use of my invention,
the exact dimensions, precise details of connection of the parts and the formation there of as hereinbefore described, and shown in 'the accompanying drawings, may be further modified or varied to suit the particular requirements in their installation, without departing from the essential or basic feature of my invention as comes within the scope of the appended claims.

In an electrically propelled elevator installation, cam mechanism for engaging and controlling the action of the limit, electric circuit controlling devices, means foriirst effecting an initial fixed position of the cam mechanism with respect to the circuit controlling devices, and other means for effecting a final adjustment of the cam shoes or members to provide for predetermined time contacting of the cams withthe said circuit controlling devices. i
2. In an electrical power actuated elevator installation, the combination with a cut out switch; of a cam holding "frame, the
said frame and the cut out switch having .movement relatively to each other and means for adjusting the cam holder for positioning the cam for contacting with the movement relatively to each. other and means for adjusting thecam holder for pcsitioning the cam for contacting with the cutout switch at predeterminedpoints of movement of the cam or switch relatively to each other, the said, means including devices forsetting the camholder in a relatively fixed position for engaging the cam with the switch and other devices for adjusting the cam in its position on the holder for timing the contacting of the said cam and the aforesaid switch.

In an electrically operated elevator in-' stallation, the combination with a car, a cam device movable with the car, a limit cut out switch in the electric operating circuit, the said cam device including a cam holding frame secured to and laterally adjustable with respect to the car, means for effecting such adjustment of the cam holding frame, the said means comprising anchor links secured to and projected horizontally from the car, a cam holder frame and devices for adjustably mounting the said holder frame for slidably engaging the anchor links and primary anchor brackets that are rigged to suit the installation requirements, and securing the same along the said links, the said devices comprising an elongated slot formed lengthwise in each of the anchor links, bolts that take through the cam holder frame and the aforesaid slots in the anchor links and a retainer link pivotally secured to each of the anchor links and having a series of apertures, through selected ones of which the bolts that secure the cam frame and engage the slots in the anchor links, are adapted to pass, when looking the cam holder to its lateral adjustments with respect to the car.
7 In an electrically operated elevator installation, the combination with a normally closed circuit controlled switch that constitutes a part of the installation and the car; of a switch engaging cam, a holder therefor, means for mounting the frame on the car, said means including'devices for effecting adjustment of the frame laterally with respect to the car, said cam comprising at least one switch contacting shoe, means mounted upon and movable with the holder for effecting longitudinal adjustment of the cam shoe, up or down, along the frame whereby to set the cam shoe for engaging the switch at predetermined points in the travel of the cage up or down.
8. In an electrically operated elevator installation, the combination with the elevator and a switch in the electric transmis sion circuit for effecting either the up or down limits or intermediate stoppages of the car; of a cam holding frame, means for mounting the frame on the car to move therewith and for effecting lateral adjustments of the said frame relatively to the car, a cam shoe mounted on the frame for engaging the electrical cut out switch and means for effecting adjustment of the shoe vertically with respect to the holding frame and the car.
9. In an electrically operated elevator installation, the combination with the elevator and a switch in the electric tl'tLIlSHliS: sion circuit for effecting the limits of intermediate stoppages of the car; of a cam holding frame, means for mounting the frame on the car to move therewith and for effecting lateral adjustments of the said frame relatively to the car, a cam shoe mounted on the frame for engaging the electrical cut out switch and means for effecting adjustment of the shoe vertically with respect to the holding frame and the car, the said means comprising an angle bar, one member of which has elongated slots, bolts engaging the cam shoe that pass through the slots in the-angle bar and draw rods mounted on the angle frame connecting the shoe engaged bolt and means for effecting adjustment of the draw rod for sliding the shoe or shoe members lengthwise up or down along the slotted members of the angle bar.

In an electrically operated elevator installation, the combination with a circuit breaking switch and the car; of a switch engaging cam mechanism movable with the car, said cam mechanism including a cam holder frame, means for mounting the said frame on the car to move therewith and effect lateral adjustment thereof relatively to the car, the said means for mounting the cam frame including anchor links projected laterally from the car, the holder including an angle bar, one face of whlch carries the cam shoe, the other face or arm of which is slotted longitudinally, at its opposite ends, keeper bolts that engage the slots in the angle car and the anchor links, whereby to provide for shifting the holder frame vertically with respect to the car.

In an electrically operated elevator installation, the combination with a circuit breaking switch and the car; of a switch engaging cam mechanism movable with the car, said cam mechanism including a cam holder frame, means for mounting the said frame on the car to move therewith and effect lateral adjustment thereof relatively to the car, the said means for mounting the cam frame including anchor links projected laterally from the car, the holder including an angle bar, one face of which carries the cam shoe the other face or arm of which is slotted longitudinally, at its opposite ends, keeper bolts that engage the slots in the angle bar and the anchor links, whereby to provide for shifting the holder frame ver tically with respect to the car, and means carried by the angle bar for interlockably engaging t 1e aforesaid keeper bolts for looking the cam carrying angle bar to its vertical adjustments on the anchor hnks.

In an electrically operated elevator installation, the combination with a circuit breaking switch and the car; of a switch engaging cam mechanismmovable with the car, said cam mechanism including a cam, V holder frame, means for mounting the sald frame on the car to move therewith and eifect lateral adjustment thereof relatively to the car, the said means for mounting the cam frame'including anchor links projected laterally from the car, the holder including an angle bar, one face of which carries the camshoe, the other face or arm of which is slotted longitudinally at its opposite ends, keeper bolts that engage the slots in the angle bar and the anchor links, whereby to provide for shifting the holder framevertically with'respect to the car; and means carried by the angle barfor interlockably engaging the aforesaid keeper bolts for locking the cam carrying angle bar to its vertical adjustments on the anchor links, the said means comprising retainer arms pivotally secured, at one end, on the angle bar and having its other end formed with apertures. 2 adapted for being selectively brought into polsition for being engaged by the keeper b0 ts.
