To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WELLS KILBURN, of Napa, county of Napa, State of California, have invented an Improved Coupling for Gas and Water Mains; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel device for coupling pipes in a speedy manner; and it consists in the employment of two eccentrics operating upon opposite sides of one part of the coupling. A strap passes around each of these eccentrics, and over a pin upon the other part of the coupling, so that when the eccentrics are turned so as to draw on the strap the parts will be strongly drawn together.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my coupling. Fig. 2 is a top view.
A and B are two coupling pieces, into the ends of which the pipes O and D are screwed. Upon opposite sides of one of the couplings, A, are two short shafts, E, which serve as axes for the two eccentrics F. A square post, Gr, projecting from each eccentric, serves to turn them. The periphery of each eccentric is grooved, and a strap, H, encircles it, being brought nearly together at the front, as shown. The two parallel sides I I are then carried over a pin, J, which is secured to the side of the other coupling, B.
Now, when it is necessary to unite two lengths of pipe the straps are simply hooked over these pins, while the largest part of the eccentric is turned towards the part B. By means of a Wrench applied to the posts G the eccentrics are then turned so as to draw the two parts strongly together, and this makes a Very efficient coupling.
A short flange, entering a corresponding countersink, may be employed at the point of junction of the pipes, and any suitable packing may be used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
A pipe-coupling, consisting of the cams or eccentrics F, with their straps H, together with the pins J, upon the two parts of the coupling, respectively, when constructed to operate substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
