HYAOINTHE GONELLAZ, OF VERMILLIONVILLE, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DREDGING-MACHI NES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,821, dated July 15,1873; application filed May 31, 1873.
CASE A.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HYAGINTHE GONELLAZ, of Vermillionville, in the Parish of Lafayette and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Dredging-Machine, of which the following is a specification:
In this invention a bucket-wheel and dischargingpan similar to those represented in my patent No. 130,213, dated August 6, 1872, are arranged so that the wheel mounted at the bow of the boat revolves in a plane at right angl to it, and delivers the earth at one side, nd the pan carrying it in the same direction delivers it on the bank of a canal or river, and are by virtue of such arrangement specially adapted for dredging rivers and canals In this case also the colters used for cutting and loosening up the earth preparatory to the taking of it by the buckets are arrangedw on the advancing side of the wheel, and so inclined as to draw the boat forward at the same time that they loosen the earth.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved machine partly sectioned. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation in the longitudinal direction of the boat, and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the bucket-wheel taken on the line a: 00.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A represents the boat; B, a strong'vertical frame overhanging the bow for the support of the bucket-wheel (l and the apparatus for operating it. This wheel, which is for scraping up the earth at the bottom of the canal or river, is arranged to revolve in a plane at right angles to tlhe long axis of the boat so as to discharge toward the river or canal bank into the swinging and dumping discharging-pan D, which is mounted on a frame, E, which swings in the same direction-that is, laterally to the boat and toward the bank. F represents colters on the front or advancing side of the bucket-wheel, for cutting down the bank and loosening the earth preparatory to the "scraping of it up by the buckets. The colters are inclined or pitched forward so that they draw the boat along at the same time that they prepare the earth to be taken by the buckets. The wheel is suspended by rods G so as to be raised or lowered to correspond with the required depth. It is turned by the ratchetsH, nawls I, rods J, arms J, and rockshaft K. The rods J are connected so as to be let down to correspond with the wheel. The swinging pan-frame E is also worked by the rock-shaft K, to which it is connected by rod L and arm M, and it is suspended so as to be shifted up and down as the wheel is shifted. The rock-lever is worked by the arm N, rod 0, rock-shaft P, and the connecting-rod Q, to which the power may be applied in any approved way. The buckets are provided with discharging-spoons R, as in the other patent above mentioned, to facilitate the discharging of the contents by swinging forward at the proper time.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent 1. The combination, in a dredging-boat, of
. a bucket- Wheel, 0, and discharging-pan D,
and their operating devices, arranged to discharge the earth dredged up laterally to the boat and onto the bank of a river or canal, substantially in the manner described.
2. The colters F, arranged on the front of the dredging-wheel, and inclined so as to pull the boat along by the act of cutting down the bank preparatory to the taking of it by the spoons.
HYAOINTHE GONELLAZ.
