- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK D, Kn fe and FLOYD L. Jackson; citizens'of the United States, residing the former at Binghamto'n, thelatter at Endi cott, in the county of Brooms and State of'New York, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for La ing Out Templates and Jigs, of which the ollowing is a specification.
The present invention hasreferencev enerally to improvements in that class 0 1nventions known as measuring instruments and more particularly relates to a measuring device for use in marking templates or like work. I
The invention as its primary aim and objectcontemplates the provision of a device of the above-mentioned charactenwherein there is employed a measurin element 0 f' a' right angle shape, the arms 0 which are Inscribed with scales and have slidably associated therewith adjustable blocks in order to insure-of accurate marking of the work. As an additional and equally important object, the invention embraces the provision of distance pieces or spacers in connection with the measuring element andhas parallels and guides on the work sup ort to assist in the measuring'and mar nng of the work. a l Y p It is a further object of the invention to provide means for a justably connecting the parallels and guides to the work support to permit of the marking of work of varying thicknesses.
More Specific objects of the invention consist-in the provision of a device of the above character wherein novel locking means" is employed to lock the blocks on the scaled arms of the measuring element. to permit of other pieces of similar work being similarl marked; to provide means for releasably tively few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the efiiciency'high.
Other objects, as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope ofthis'inv'em tion will be'more readily apparent'from the and marking element;
insaid proved measuring and gul'arly Specification of Letterslfatent. Patented-11 mb. 23, 1922 Application filed January; 29', 1915-; ser alin;'2i i,a3' 1,
The invention is clearly illustrated in the V accompanying drawings, in which:
" F igurejl is a-topj'plan' of the invention showm'g work in bosition for marking;
Figure 2 is 'a'si e elevation of the same;
F lgure 3 is a perspe'ctiveof the measuring Figure a is a. fragmentary to plan view showing the locking means for the blocks on the scaled arms; and Figure 5 the same. i i
Similar characters of reference areemplayed in all of the'above described views to inclica'tecorresponding parts.
Beferring n'ow"more particularly to the drawin s, A represents the base late or work support-,the-same having certain ofthe marginal portions thereof provided with removably mounted horizontal-parallels B. which,- as w'ill'be noted, are preferably secured to the base A, by screws or like his teningdevicesifl To those edges of the work support A adjacentthe parallels B guides fare secured vertically, preferably" by screws2, which,,pass through slots formed guides C in order that'the same may he" adjustedverticallyfor apurpose, hereinafter described. A plurality of sockets generally indicated by thenumeral' 4 is formed the upperface of the work support A which-"removably receive the pivot pins of 'lockingcamst while the cams are positioned adjacent the work H arranged on the support and then turned into engagement with the work so as to releasably clamp it against further-movement during the measuring and marking operation.
*With a; view toward providing the im-' marking element, generally designated E, the same may be said to consist broadly of a pair of right ancli'spos'ed' adjusting screws and comprisesa' right singularly shaped body forming'a'rms and 'slidably' supporting at the juncture thereofa marking punch F.. Blocks l0, a're slidahly mounted on the arms and are "each constructed preferably in sections one of which sections is recessed as at 11 while the other is in 'th'eform of a cover plate 12 held a; the recessed section 11 as by screws 13. Apertured bearing lugs 7 are formed isa transverse sectional viewpf v integral with the body of the elementE and rotatably receive adjusting rods 9, the opposite'en'd portions thereofbeing threaded; and' operating through the correspqndingly screwthreaded bores of'other lugs '8' caroperat ng stemportions rotatably mounted in the cover plate sections l 2 ofi, the blocks he am Por ns P TPPQ e ts P tioned in the recessed sections 11 ofgthe blocks and meet with siihstentially D rsha ed clamping elements, M which, are alsos idabl 1-lcgxi'llllll deted in the recessed sections and: upon the turning of, thQCBIIJS fQICQd into clampingmflhtion with the edgesofthe adjacent arms of the measuring element-E; I Coacting with the-arms of, the measuring element E are theimproved distance pieces or spacers D having lugs (13, ontheir outer endsiwhich ahu-t the 'stripson guides G, In this connection, it: isalso ,to he obseryed that theidistance pieces; or spacers; lie; on the work Hon the'support, and on the parallels or g iidesvB the inner end portions: lying under the armsoftthe,meesuring elementend abutting the adjacent edges of the blocks if) The width ofthe parallels or guides B is slmiler and known while the distance pieces themselvesiare. also of known lengths.
Each arm of the element E is donned-With e lug 6, thedaces ofthe adjacentginner ends thereof being on imaginary straight lines withfthe center of the punch F sothatenother measuring implement (not shown) may, he used if, desired in connection with the. said lugs (iendthe lugs di for verifying th uad 'ust nents .made by the n ensuring elw nifillbl {i andspacersQDi' In'foperationthe, work.
