.GGIVIBINADIQN GAUGENG' T901 To all whomz't may concern: H
Be it known that we, tinnitus-r1 UYARBATT, resident of i l Redford Jotreet, Gannarr BAR- RON, resident of 4:13 Lincoln Pioachand Anna HAM GARRATT, resident of i-a'l lledford Street, all of Peterborough, in the county of Non thamptonshire, England, and all subjectsof the King of Great Britain and lirelanrh'have invented a certain new and useful Improve ment in Combination Gauging Tools, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a combination tool for use by engineers and others, the ob ject of which is to provide a single tool, capa bio of use for a number of purposes, and at the same time of a compactand simple construction, capable of readily being carried in the owners pocket.
Our improved combined tool may be used as a T-square, ordinary square, an 'le gauge, curvature gauge, center line square, spirit level, depth gauge, plumb rule heirliit gauge, surface gauge and width gauge.
According to our invention we employ a suitable steel square, consisting of a thick steel base and a thin blade oi steel or other suitable material secured to the base at about its centre and at right angles thereto. The base is provided with a slot, and in a recess in this slot is provided a spirit level. Upon one side of the base .itsthiclrness reduced by means of a V-shaped portion cut away so that the two inclined er ges of the V are at 45 or other suitable angle to the edge of the blade and so that the two sides intersect at a point on a continuation of the side of the blade, so that it the square be placed upon the end. of a circular object so that the two sides of the V bear against the circumference thereof, the edge of the blade will pass across the centre of the circular object.
Thus by scribing lines against the edge of the blade in two or more positions, their intersection will locate the, centre of the circular object. 7
A longitudinal slot is also provided in the blade of the square and this is preferably recessed upon the back to receive the head of a clamping screw which is located in the slot. This clamping screw serves to secure a cross bar or blade also provided with a slot whichengages over the clamping screw so that the cross bar may be slidden endwise or turned about theclamping screw so as to secure it in position upon the blade of the square.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 28, 1922.
Application filed April 12, 1920. Serial No. 373,579.
This cross bar is also provided with a transverse recess, adapted to engage over and nt closely upon the blade of the T square, so that when this recess is engaged upon the blade, the transverse bar will be secured at right angles to the blade and parallel to the base. The bar may then be slidden upon the blade of the T square and clamped in any desired position.
The clamping screw, for mounting the transverse bar upon the blade oi the i square, comprises a hollow screw having a head adapted to fit in the recessin-the back of the blade of the'square,an.d a clamping nut, having a milled head, is adapted to engage. upon it so as to clamp the transverse bar in position. A hole in provided right through the centre of the clam aing screw and the outside thread is tapered at its end and split, so that by screwing a second milled nut, having a tapered thread in its interior, on to the end of the hollow screw, the split portion will be contracted so as to clamp a. scriber or thin bar passed through the aperture therein. Such a scriber comprises a thin steel rod, bent at right angles at one end, preferably pointed and hardened so that when clamped in position it may be used for scribing,- lines upon an object, either on the vertical or horizontal face thereof.
A further small pointer, comprisinga steel pin formed toa point at one end and engagedin a hollow steel screw, is provided in the slot in the transverse bar, and a clamplug; nut, havingmilled head, is provided on this screw so that the pointer may be secured in any desired position in the slot in the transverse bar.
When it is desired to carry the tool, in the pocket the transverse bar is turned parallel to the blade of the T square and clamped so as to lie thereon; the scriber is removed from the clamp screw in the blade, and the bent over end is inserted intoa special hollow screw having a tapered split end and adapted, to be screwed into an'aperture in the outer end of the transverse blade so that the scriber will be clamped in this screw by means of the bent over end, whilst the length of the scriberwilllie parallel to and close againstthe blade of the square.
The opposite end of thetransverse bar is provided with a small square hole. To the top end of the blade of the T square may be secured a thin cord adapted to engage in a slot therein and to be suspended over the edge of the blade so as to form a plumb line.
In order that our invention may be more readily understood reference is made to the accompanying sheet of illustrative drawings in which Fig. l is front elevation of our improved gauging tool.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the tool.
Fig. 4 is a detail of the moveable cross bar.
Fig. cross-bar, and a Fig. 6 is a detail 01 a moveable scribcr point.
Referring to the drawings, the T square comprises a base 1 from which projects the blade 2 at right angles thereto. The base 1 is provided with a slot 3, and a spirit level 4 is mounted therein, a hole being drilled from one end of the basal for the reception of the spirit level 4 and plugged at the end by a screw plug 6.
In the back of the. base 1 is provided a- V shaped recess 7, the sides o1 which are inclined at an angle of 45 to the edge of the blade 2, and are arranged in such a position in the base 1 so that the two sides intersect at a point on a continuation of one side edge of the blade 2, so that if the square be placed upon the end of a circular object with the two sides of the recess 7 against the circumference, thereof, the blade will pass across the centre of the circular object thus enabling the centre to be marked by scribing a series of lines at an angle to each other.
A longitudinal slot 8 is provided in the blade 2 of the square, and this is recessed at 9 in the back of the blade to receive the head 10 of a clamping screw 11, by means of which a cross blade 12 maybe clamped upon the blade 2. The cross blade 12 is slotted at 13 and the clamping screw 11 passes through the slot 13 in the blade is exactly at right angles to the length of the blade 12 and of such a width as to fit closely over the edges of the T square blade" 2, so that when this recess 16 is engaged over the edges of the Tsquare blade 2, the
cross blade 12 will be maintained at right angles to the blade 2 and parallel to the base 1 of the T square. The blade 12 may thus be slidden upon the blade 2, whilst he- 5 is a detail of the clamp for the ing maintained parallel to the base 1 so as to act as a gauge for measurements of length.
The cross blade 12 is provided with a square hole 17 at one end, which is adaptedto be engaged over the clamping screw 11 when it is desired to secure the cross blade 12 at its extreme end to the blade 2. At the opposite end of the blade 12 is provided a hollow tapered screw 18, having a knurled head 19 and which engages in a hole in the end of the blade 12. This screw 1.8 is split longitudinally so that when it is screwed into the blade 12, the hole 20 through the axis of the screw 18 will be reduced so as'to clamp ascriber or small rod in position therein. j
In a suitable position toward one end of the blade 12 are scribed a series of inclined lines 21 at varying anglesto the blade so that the blade may be set at varying angles to the blade 2 of the T square in accordance with these lines.
The clamping screw 11 is provided with a hole 22 passing axially through its centre for the reception ot'a scriber or other rod 23. The end of the clampingscrew '11 projects considerably beyond the nut 15, which clamps the cross blade 12 in position, and its end 24 is tapered and split at25, and a knurled headed nut 26 engages on this split tapered end 24 of the clamping screw 11 so as to cause it to contract upon and hold the scriber 23 in position therein.
Adjust-ably mounted in the slot 13 of the cross blade 12 is provided the small clamping screw 27, upon which is provided the washer 28 and knurled headed nut 29 by means of which it may be clampedin any desired position along the length of the slot 13 in the blade 12. This screw 27 is provided with an axial hole passing through its centre, and a short'scriber or pointed rod 30v is secured therein.
When it is desired to carry the tool in the pocket the cross blade 12 is turned parallel to the blade 2' of the T square and clamped so as to liethereon. The scriber23 is re moved fromv theelainping screw 11 in the blade, and the bent ever end 31 of this scriber is inserted into the hollow, ta ered screw 18, which is then screwed into the blade 12 so as to clampthescriber 23 in p'osition'so that its length lies parallel to and over the cross blade 12 and the T'square' blade2. In this manner the parts may be arranged so as to 1 occupy a minim unr of space, and to ofi'er the fewest possible proj ections so as to enable the tool to be readily carried in a pocket or case. 7
What weclaim as our invention, and desire on the T square blade andmeans for adjustably clamping it thereon and a scriber held in said means, and disposed perpendicularly to the plane of the tool and passing through the slots in the T square blade and cross blade.
