To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, MAJo Po'rKALIoKI,
citizen of Poland, residing at Lilly, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleds, of which the following' is a specification.
his invention relates to sleds such as are used mostly by children for coasting on hills or inclines generally.
The invention has for an object to provide a simple and inexpensive attachment adapted for use to prevent sidewise slipping or skidding of the sled.
For further comprehension ofthe invention, and of the objects and. advantages thereof, reference will be had to thefollowing description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended. claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

As here shown my improved sled comprises a pair of runners 10 having their front ends upturned in an ordinary manner as at 11, these runners being preferably of angular cross section with the vertical.

These runners have secured to the upturned front ends thereof the front ends of a pair of long1tudinal angle irons 12 whose rear ends are the vertical flanges of the runners 10' are preferably heightened as at 20 near the. front and rear ends of the sled, these being preferably a front palr'and a rear pair of these devices. The rear devices comprise a pair of star-wheels 21 which. are fixed on the inner ends of spindles such as 22 which extend freely through sleeves 23 slidable in curved slots 24 in the extensions, the sleeves each having a lip 25 which engages the Wall of the slot 24, to prevent displacement, while a proi jection 26 is formed on the lower side of each sleeve to provide a handle for adjust ment. The main lengthof each'of these slots 24 extends substantially vertically, with preferably a slight'forward inclination from the bottom to the top, while the ends of these slots turn backwardly in the form of offset recesses 27 and 28 in which the sleeves are adapted to be received. i Y i The front devices are of the same general construction as the rear devices just de-' scribed, being-provided however with different adjusting means. Each of. these devices comprisesa star-wheel 30 similarto the star-wheel 21 and fixed on the end of a short spindle 31 which extends freely through a sleeve 32 slidable in a slot 33 in the extension 20, a flange 34 on the sleeve preventing displacement thereof from the slot. Each of these forward slots 33 is similar to the rear slots 24 being provided at its ends with ofi'set recesses 35 and- 36 similar to the recesses 27 and 28. Each of the sleeves 32 has fixed thereto the lower end of a verti-. cal rod 1 40 which extends downwardly through a slot 41 in the runner extension 20 and is provided with a rigid outturned handle 42 on its upper end. A coiled expansion spring43 which surrounds the rod and bears between the top of the extension 20 and the head 42 normally tends to lift the star-wheel 30 upward, a washer 44being preferably interposed between the spring andthe top of the extension 20.
In the use of the device the spind1es22' and 31 of the star- wheels 21 and 30 may be adjusted from end to end of the slots 24 and the sleeves 23 and 32 engaged in either the upper offsets 27 or the lower offsets 28. In
the latter position the points of the starwheels project below the runners 10 and engage the surface over which the sled is moving. When the sleeves engage in the upper offsets from the slots 24 the star-wheels are raised completely above the said surface, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3. As will be apparent, by reason'of the backturned, or
respective upward and downward disposibe adjusted.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows b r 1. In a sled, an adjustable device adapted to engage the surface over which the sled travels for control purposes, anelement on which said device is mounted, said element passing through an upwardly extending slot in the sled runner, said slot having recessed offsets at each end thereof adapted to engage said element to retain said device in operative or inoperative positions.
2; In 'a'sled, in combination'with the runners thereof, upward extensions on said runners toward the front and rear ends thereof, saidextensions having slots extending upward therein, said slots having offsets at opposite ends turned backwardly beside the main lengthsof the slots, elements slidable in said slots, and star-wheels mounted 'on said elements, said star-wheels being adapted to be localized in raised or lowered positions by engagement of the saidelenients with the said offsets.

said extensions having slots extending upward therein, said slots having turned backwardly beside the main lengths of the slots ofi'sets at opposite ends, sleeves slidable in said slots, spindles rotatably carried by said sleeves, and star-wheels fixed on said spindles, said star-wheels being adapted to be localizedin raised or lowered positions by engagement of the said sleeves with the said oil'sets. p v
