ARTICLE HOLDER OR STAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 28, 1922.
Application filed September 13, 1920. Serial No. 411,041.
provide improved means for holding and.
supporting books. photographs, picture cards. and other articles of similar character and aims to provide a device whereby such articles can be conveniently and readily supported without danger of injury or damage. An additional object is to provide a new and novel symmetrical form of stand or holder formed from a single strand of wire and particularly adapted for holding copy books and the like in open position and permitting the pages to be turned as desired.
With the above and otherobjects in view, the invention may be said to reside generally in the construction and arrangement of parts as will be more fully hereinafter pointed out, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein-- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a stand or holder constructed in accordance with the invention, and
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof.
The device is constructed of a single piece of wire which is doubled upon itself toprovide twostrands, 1 and 2 which are twisted about each other to provide a single stem supporting portion 3 inwardly of the terminal loop at. The strands separate adjacent one end of twister stem '3 and are curved to provide coils 5 from whence they are again extended in twisted formation as shown at 6. At point 7, suitably elevated above the supporting surface upon which the holder may rest, thestrands separate and diverge laterally in opposite directions providing horizontally disposed base members 8 and 9 respectively. These base members are each provided with upwardly disposed extended side portions 10 which constitute side portions of looped members 12 from which the members are retroverted in the portions 11, which end in the downwardly extending portions 13 forming two ginner arms, as shown, and it is between these arms that a picture, photograph or other article arranged in the holder is held. The twisted portion 6, occupying a central position with respect to end post 3 constitutes the axis of symmetry and forms a central supporting post and, as illustrated extends upwardly beyond the end posts which are of a relatively short height. Twisted port-ion extends downwardly in rear of center post 6 and provides a rear supporting brace for the stand, the loop terminals l contacting with the-supporting surface as shown. I
A supporting coil 12 is formed at the lower end of the outside arm 18 of the end post and provides under supports therefor, each coil being extended upwardly to pro- VlClG a spring clip arm 14- closely spaced to its respective end post and normally urged inwardly thereagainst by the tensioning action of the coils. The upper terminal of each holding clip is curved outwardly as at 15 to provide a finger grip whereby it may be flexed outwardly against the tensioning action of the coil whenever any object of more than usual thickness is inserted between the holding clip and the end post.
When the device is arranged as shown to advantage in Figure 2 of the drawings, it will be noted that the holder is supported entirely by the front supporting coils 12 and the loop or foot 4 of the brace. The two members 3 and 6 are angularly disposed with respect to the brace coil 5 so that the supporting end of theholder is main tamed on a su table lncline and the coil per-- mits the brace 3 to be adjusted rearwardly of the center post to the proper distance for suitably supporting the latter. The tensioning action of the coil normally tends to pull the supporting brace 3 inwardly toward the center post, but it is to be noted that the foot 4 is provided with a flat bearing portion 16 which is in frictional contact with the supporting surface or base upon which the holder is arranged and that the foot has a slight rearward flare so that the tensioning action of the spring only causes the foot to more firmly engage the supporting surface and to hold the frame in upright position.
In using the device the article to be supported is inserted between the holding clip 14 and the end post 10, resting upon the top of the supporting coil 12. The coils 12 enable the holding clip to be moved outwardly for accommodating books or articles of various thickness.
It is obvious that the above described device could be put to various uses and may be employed for supporting articles of various descriptions and character.
that various changes in regards to the construction and design of parts may be freely resorted to as fall within the scope of the invention defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patient is A symmetrical article holder of the class described made of a single length of wire including acentrally located supporting section comprising two twisted strands which extend from a central terminal loop from which the strands are continued in two coils then in a twisted portion forming the axis of symmetry from which are continued at each side two horizontal portions from which extend upward, two side portions, then retroverted downwardly parallel to said axis of symmetry to form two inner arms each of which terminate at its lower end in a supporting coil then retroverted npwardly to provide a clip arm each of which ends in an outwardly directed finger grip, whereby an article may be supported. on said coils and between said side port-ions and said arms, all substantially as and in the manner shown. s V
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
