T 0 all whom it nmy concern Be it known that I, CLARENCE SAUNDERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lighting Systems for Self-Serving Stores, of which the following is a specification.

My said invention consists in improved arrangement, and system for lighting of selfserving stores of the type shown in my Patent No. 134:2,872, and in my co-pending application No. 198,134 October 23, 1917, Patent No. 1,357,521, November 2, 1920, where by a very convenient and efficient system of lighting is provided peculiarly adapted for the use of such type of stores, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings which'are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts.

Figure 1 is a diagrammatic View showing such a store and the lighting system forming the subject matter hereof, and

Figures 2 and 3 detail view showing the arrangement.

It will be noted that the lighting system comprises brackets 15 supported on the top of the central cabinets 10 and 11 carrying transverse arms 12 extending across the space between said cabinets and to central positions above aisles 1 and 4 with lamps 13 supported on their outer ends and centrally of the space betweenthe cabinets 10 and 11. Lamps 14 are carried on arms 16 extending forward from arm 12 in line with cabinets 10 and 11 to points above the settlement station. A. conduit 17 for carrying the electric wires for supplying the current is mounted on the top and runs longitudinally of one of said cabinets being joined to an appropriate connection 18 leading from the main conduit either above the ceiling or below the floor as may be found most convenient in the building being used. The wires run through the pipes of which said arms and conduits are composed and are appropriately connected to the lamps.

By this arrangement a lighting system is provided that afiords most efhcient service, bringing the lights to the points where most needed; all parts of the salesroom are brightly illuminated; the fixtures and instal lation are comparatively inexpensive; electric illumination is made possible at a minimum expense in buildings not provided with modern electrical equipment; supporting and distance fixing devices are provided for cabinets 1.0 and 11 which stand midway of the salesroom, and a uniform appearance is insured for all such stores equipped therewith.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1; An apparatus for the vending of merchandise comprising a series of merchandise holders arranged parallel to each other and spaced from each other and from the walls or partitions of the store to provide a single circuitous pathway for customers and a lighting system therfor comprising lighting fixtures extending transversely of said holders adjacent their ends and lamps on the fixtures midway of the parallel parts of the pathway, substantially as set forth.

2. An apparatus for the, vending of mer chandise comprising a series of merchandise holders arranged parallel to each other and spaced from each other and from the walls or partitions of the store to provide a single circuitous pathway for customers, lighting fixtures extending transversely of said holders adjacent their ends, a common conductor for electricity extending along the top of one of said holders and connected to each fixture, and electric lamps on the fixtures above the center line of the parallel parts of the pathway, substantially as set forth.

An apparatus for the vending of merchandise comprising a series of merchandise holders arranged parallel to each other and spaced from each other and from the walls or partitions of the store to provide a single circuitous pathway for customers, a structure adjacent the exit providing a checking and settlement station, and a lighting system therefor comprising lighting fixtures extending transversely of said holders adjacent their ends, one of said fixtures having branches extending over the settlement desk and lamps on said branches and on the fixtures above the center line of the parallel parts of the pathway, substantially as set forth.
