To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Rosn, a subject of'the King of Great Britain, residing at Albion Works, Gainsborough, in the county of Lincoln, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Inserting Articles into Open- Ended Receptacles, Envelopes, Sheaths, or Uases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for inserting articles into open-ended receptaclcs, envelopes, sheaths, or cases, more especially intended for putting together the inner and outer portions of sliding boxes, that is boxes of the kind employed for containing cigarettes, matches, or other articles, and having a tray, or box-proper (which we term the inner member) which is slidden into an open-ended envelope, sheath, or case, (which we term the outer'member) and for the purposes of description we will presume that the apparatus is to be used for that purpose and from this its application to insertingother articles into open-ended receptacles will also be understood.
The said inner members, and outer members, may be of any suitable material, such, for instance, as thick paper, or cardboard.
In an apparatus in accordance with this invention a suitably shaped holder, or support, is held in astationary position on, the framework ofthe apparatus and is provided with aside, which can be turned into such a" position asto lie in, or about, the same plane as the bottom of the said holder, or support. v
The outer members to be dealt with by the apparatus can be delivered, one at a time, onto the said holder, by hand, or by any suitable mechanical. means such, for exam-V ple, as a reciprocable slide moving the said outer members from a vertical pile thereof in a magazine, or from a platform, or the like, in proximity to the said stationary holder, or support.
As the outer members, with which this a paratus is intended to deal, are fed into t e apparatus in a collapsed, or flattened, condition, a wedge-shaped, or tapered, de-
vice is brought, by any suitable operative means, into a position to pass into the outer member, and open it by expanding it, Or moving apart, the sides thereof.
The movable side of the aforesaid stationary holder, or support,'is operated in conjunction with the aforesaid wedge-shaped, or tapered, device and a top-plate is operated so as to co-act with the sides and bottom of the said holder, or support, and come against the upper side of the expanded outer member, so that the said outer member is supported, in an opened condition, by the said holder, or support, which, together with its sides and the said top-plate, constitute means by whichthe outer member is retained in its open condition whilst the aforesaid wedgeshaped, or tapered, device is moving back out of the outer member, and clear of the path along which the box is subsequently moved out of the apparatus.
Supported in proximity to the said holder, or support, is a channel or conductor, provided with a tapered mouthpiece, which may be formed, for example, of strips of flexible steel, or the like.
A'reciprocatable first pusher is provided which can be brought to bear against the endof the outer member farthest from the aforesaid mouthpiece, and move the said outer member towards the tapered mouthpiece, until the forward open end of the said outer member is passed over the said tapered mouthpiece.
An inner member is, at, or about, the same time, brought into proximity with the afore' said channel, or conductor, which may be done by hand, or by any other suitable means.
A reciprocatable transmitting member opcrates so as to thrust the inner member along the channel, or conductor, and through the mouthpiece into the outer member, which at this time, is retained in the open position by the aforesaid mouthpiece, stationary holder, top-plate, and first pusher. The aforesaid top-plate now moves away from the upper side of the outer member and, on further forward movement of the transmitting member, and corresponding retiring movement of the first pusher, the outer member, with the inner member in it is moved so as to be freed from the tapered mouthpiece, and then the transmitting member retires to its orignal position and a second pusher acts upon the end of the outer member which has bee-n forced out of engagement with the tapered mouthpiece. same time (and preferably by means operative in connection with the second pusher)" or onto a support, from which it may be re moved, to any required place.-
I will describe with reference to the accompanyingdrawings, a construction of apparatus in" accordance with this invention explaining how it may be performed, but I do not limit myself to the precise details illustrated.

A main shaft 5 is supported by bearings 6 carried by the side frame 3, and rotative movement can be given to, the said main shaft by any suitable means, such forinstance, as glbelt and pulley, an electric motor, or the Brackets 7, extend from the side frame 3 and support the shaft 8.

A spring 25' is attached at one end'to an extension 16 of the arm 16, and at the other 7 end to a lug 26, on the underside of the table 1, to keep the roller 23, in contact' with the cam 24. A slider 27 is capable of reciprocating movement on a bar 28, rigidly supported by a bracket 29, carried upon the table 1.

retaining the roller 82, in contact with the earn 83.
A second pusher 86, is carried by a boss 87, and pins 88, on those ends of the rocking arms 77, which are oppositely disposed to the ends on which the first pusher 74 is mounted.
The ends of a yoke-piece 89, are connected to the pushers 74, alfd 86, by pins 90 and 91, respectively. A pin 92 is disposed midway between the pins 90 and 91, on the yoke piece 89, and two links 93, connect the said pin 92, with another pin 94, on the end of an arm 95, carried by a boss 96, secured to a spindle 97, supported in hearings in bosses 9S and 98, carried by the side frames 3, and 3 respectively. An arm 99, secured to the end of the spindle 97, carries an antifriction roller 100 bearing against a cam 101, secured to the main shaft 5, the said roller being kept against the said cam by a spring 102, attached at one end to the pin 94, on the end of the arm 95, and, at the other end, to a stud 103, carried by the underside of the table 1. o
A pusher 104, is carried by a slider 105, capable of reciprocating movement in guides 106, on the table 1. A spindle 107 is supported in bearings 108, and 108 carried by the side frames 3, and 3, respectively, and an arm 109, is secured to the said spindle 107, and a link 110, connects the upper end of the arm 109, with the slider 105, by means of pins 111, and 112. A roller arm 113, seci'ired to the outer end of the spindle 107, is provided with an antifriction roller 114, which is kept in contact with the cam 115, by means of a spring 116, connected at one end to a pin 117, on the arm 109, and at the other end to the aforesaid stud 103. 118 represents a gap provided in the table 1, to allow of the movement of the arm 109.
A delivery channel is provided on the table 1, the said channel having upstanding side pieces 119, and 120, and a slider 121, is capable of reciprocating movement on aslide bar 122, rigidly supported from the table 1, by an extension .of the aforesaid bracket 29. An ejector piece 123 depends from the slider 121. An arm 124 is connected at its upper end by means of a jointrod 125, and pins 126 and 127, to the slider 121.
The boss 128 of the arm 124 is supported by, and is capable of rocking movement on, the spindle 8, and has an arm 129, )rovided with an .antifriction roller 130, kept in contact with a cam 131, (secured to the main shaft by means of a spring 132, attached, atone end to a lug 133 on the slider 121, and at the other end to a lug 134, on the extended portion of the bracket 29.
The springs 25, 39, 55, 65, S4, 102, 116, and 132, are, for the sake of clearness, omitted from Figure 3.
The hereinbefore described apparatus operates as follows An outer member A, in a collapsed condition is placed on the table 1, between the upstanding sides 9 and 10, and in front of the finger-piece 30. The movable side 13, of the stationary holder, or support, 11, at this time has been, or is, operated from the cam 24, so as to lie in, Or about, the same plane as the bottom of the holder, or support 11, and the finger-piece 30, is operated from the cam 38, so as to deliver the outer member A, on to the bottom of the holder, or support, 11, and up to the side 12, thereof and then the movable side 13, is turned up so as to occupy its upright, or closed, 'position, and at, or about, the same time, the wedge-shaped, or tapered, device 41, is operated from the cam 50, to pass between the upper and lower sides of the outer member A, and open, or expand, it.
The top-plate 68, is now operated from the cam 64 and bears upon the upper side of the outer member A, whilst it is supported in an opened condition on the holder, or support, 11, between the sides 12, and 13.
The first pusher 74, is operated from the cams 83 and 101, to push the outer member A, towards the tapered mouthpiece 72, of the channel, or conductor, 69, so that the opposed open end of the outer member A passes over the flexible steel strips 7 3.
The second pusher 86, is, at this time, operated from the said cams S3 and 101, so that it retires out of proximity to the outer member A.
The wedge-shaped or tapered member 41, is at, or about, the same time caused to withdraw from the outer member A, and clear of the path along which the said outer member is to be moved.
The inner member B which has been placed between the sides 70, and 71, on the channel, or conductor, 69, (by hand, or any suitable means) in front of the slider 104 by reason of the movement imparted to it from the cam 115, thrusts the said inner member B, through the tapered mouth piece 72, into the outer member A, which is, at this time,
retained in proper position by engagement with the flexible strips 73, of the said ta pel'ed mouth-piece, the holder, or support, 11 (with its sides) and the first pusher 74.-
The top plate 68,- is now, by means of the cam (it, raised from the upper side of the outer member A.
On further forward movement .of the slider 10%, and corresponding retiring movement of the first pusher 7-l, the outer member A, with the inner member B, therein is forced out of engagement with, and to a' distance from the flexible strips 78, and the ta pered mouth-piece 72, and the slider 10a is operated to make a reverse movement, whilst the second pusher 86 is operated from the aforesaid cams 83 and 101 to come into contact with the end of the outer member A, which has been forced out of engagement with the flexible strips 7 3, whilst at the same time, and by the same means, the first pusher 74, is caused to recede from the outer member A, (containing the member B) and clear of the path along which it is now made to travel by the second pusher 86 which transfers the boxconsisting of the outer member A, with the innermember B enclosed therein, clear of the holder, or support 11, and in front of the ejector piece 123, to which movement isimparted from the cam 131 so that the box is delivered between the upstanding side pieces 119, and 120, and out of the ap paratus.
What I claimis: 1. In apparatus of the character described,
a stationary holder having a movable side,
means, for moving, said side to a position'in which it lies in substantially the same plane as the bottom of the holder, a wedge device for opening and holding open a collapsed receptacle to receive a charge while supported in said holder, together-with a top plate and means for moving it into engagement with the top of the receptacle during'the withdrawal of said wedge device, substantially'as described.
2. In apparatus of the character described, a stationary holder having a movable side, means for moving said side to a position in which it lies in substantiallythe same plane as the bottom of the holder, a wedge device for opening and holding open a collapsed receptacle to receive a charge while supported in said holder, togetherwith a top plate and means for moving it into engagement with the top of the receptacle during the withdrawal of saidwedge device, together with a pusher for advancing the receptacle toward the wedge device, substantially as described.
