Description

UNITED STATES EZRA BASSETT, OF TOPEKA, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN IRONlNG-BOARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,758, dated July 15, 1873; application filed i June 14, 1873.
To all whom' it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA BAssETT, of Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and' useful Improvement in Shirt-Bosom Stretchers, Holders, and Ironers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact dei cription of the invention, such as will enable proportionate to an ordinary shirt-bosom, with the ends slightly rounded and perfectly smooth and even on its face. To t-he under side andV across each end of this board A are attached feet or cleats, a af, which project beyond the ends of the board A, serving as a stop or rest for the clamps and to keep the ironingboard from warping. B B represent hinged or swing head and foot pieces or clamps, hinged or connected to the board A by means of the wires b b', or suitable springs may be used for these wires b b', so that they can swing over the ends of the board A and rest a little below its face on the projecting portion of the cleats at a'. The head piece or clamp B, which is designed for the neck of the shirt, is curved on its outside face or edge with a swell in the center, to conform to the -shape of the shirt at the neck and shoulders. The lower or tail clamp B is straight onits face.
To operate the instrument, place the board, with the cleats downward, under the bosom and inside the shirt; raise the top or neck clamp; place the neck or yoke of the shirt between the clamp and the ironing-board and press down the clamp so as to securely clamp the shirt between the end of the board and the clamp. The front portion of the tail of the shirt is next placed around over the end of the lower or tail clamp and between the end of the ironing-board and the face of the clamp, thus securely holding and stretching the shirtbosom between the clamps and over the face of the ironing-board.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The shirt-bosom holder, stretcher and ironing-board, consisting of the board A at a, clamps or head and foot pieces B B b b, hinged or otherwise attached to the board A, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth and described.
2. The clamp B, so shaped as to conform to the neck of the shirt, when the same is swung upon the hin ges b, and is thereby made to pass over the extremity of the board A and rest upon the cleat c, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 9th day of June, 1873.
