To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Vwroa C. HQLLAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Keene, in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire, have invented -a new and Improved Reproducer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in reproducers, an object of the invention being to provide a diaphragm of improved composition or material which enables a larger diaphragm to be employed than with the materials such as commonly known, and which results in a great improvement in the reproduction of sound.
A further object is to provide a reproducer having a diaphragm of cotton fibre, suitably treated with chemicals and vulcanized to give it the necessary reproducing qualities, and which will operate not only to more perfectly reproduce sound, but dispense with the defects in the sound due to the engagement of the needle or stylus with the record. Y
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section illustrating my improved reproducer.

1 represents a sound box having a removable ring 2 clamped thereon by screws 3, said ring having a flange 4 between which tubular rubber gaskets 5 are located and clamp between them the periphery of my improved diaphragm 6. 7 is the stylus arm which is pivoted -or fulcrumed, as shown at 8, by means of screws 9, the latter projected through lugs 10 on the ring 2. The stylus is provided with the ordinary thumb screw 11 for clamping the'needle 12 thereto.
My invention resides particularly in the material of the diaphra m 6. This diaphragm I construct of cotton ber chemicalized and vulcanized so that it can bemade of a diameter appreciably larger than the ordinary diaphragm, have the same or uniform thickness throughout and give the desired vibration effects. The sound box itself is preferably composed of brass ornamented and treated in any desired manner as I believe this material will cooperate with the cotton fibre of the diaphragm in a way to vastly improve the sound reproduction, but, of course, my
improved fibre diaphragm is not limited to producer which results in a more perfect and accurate reproduction of sound than is possible with diaphragms such as heretofore known. 7
To more specifically describe the material of Which my improved diaphragms are made the following method is carried out :A base material of cotton rag is employed, pressed or otherwise formed into a cotton fibre sheet; the sheet is then chemicalized by passing the same through a boiling solutionof zinc chloride and is afterwards vulcanized by passing the sheet between mandrels under steam heat and pressure. This results in a sheet from which a diaphragm of any desired diameter may be cut; first, because the sheets can be made of any size whatsoever, and, secondly, the material will be such that it will properly function with any desired size or diameter of diaphragm. The main or most important advanta e of a diaphragm made from this material 1s that the cotton fibre or sheet or diaphragm is a homogeneous, non-laminated material which vibrates when in use without any blasting or harshness of sound and produces, I believe, the clearest and most natural tones of any material that has been used in the art.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A reproducer diaphragm, comprising a base material of cotton rag formed into a cotton fibre sheet which is chemicalizedby gassing the same through aboiling solution of zinc chloride and afterwards vulcanized.
2. The herein described method of pro- 5 ducing diaphragms consisting in first proriding a base materiel ofcotton reg which is into a cetten fibre sheet, the sheet being then ehemicalized by passing the same through a boiling solution of zincvhluria ie and afterwards vulcanized by passing sheet between mandreis under heat and sure.
