Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 21, 1922.
Application filed July 29, 1920. Serial No. 899,946.-
useful Improvements in Chocks for Automo bile Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chocks for automobile wheels. I
It is the object of the invention to provide a chock adapted to be inserted beneath a wheel for preventing movement thereof and in order to steady the wheel. The chock consists of spaced members arranged to be yieldably drawn toward one another so as to engage the wheel at opposite sides of the lowest portion of the eriphery thereof. The chock is also provi ed with means for engagin the wheel so as to withdraw the chock rom eneath the same when it is desired to remove the chock.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accomp'anying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the chock showing an automobile wheel positioned upon the same.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the chock.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.
The chock consists of the blocks 1 and 2 which may be formed of wood or any other suitable material. The blocks are adjustably positioned in longitudinal alinelnent with one another by means of a rod 3 extending along one side of one of the blocks, say the block 2.
block 1, and slidably received throu 'h a sleeve 4 extending along one side 0 the The rod 3 may be connected to block 1 by bolts 5 extending through the rod and the block, and the sleeve 4: may be secured to the block 2 by being received through the eyes of eye bolts 6 extending through the block. A ring 7 surrounds rod 3 between the bloc s 1 and 2, one end of said s ring bein fixed relative to rod 3 as byhavmg the en 8 of the sprin clamped to rod 3 by one of the bolts 5. T e opposite end of the spring is secured to the end of sleeve 4. The adj acent ends of blocks 1 and 2 are beveled as shown at 9 and the arts are so arranged that when the blocks are. drawn apart parting against the tension of spring and the chock then inserted beneath wheel A with the blocks at the opposite sides of the lowermost portion of said wheel, the spring 7 will draw the blocks toward one another so that the wheel will rest against the transverse ridges 10 of the blocks formed at the junction of beveled surfaces9 with the top surfaces 11 of the blocks. The blocks will thus form a chock for steadying the wheel and preventing movement thereof.
A handle 12 may be rovided at the outer end of block 2 for with rawing block 2 along rod 3 against the tension of sp 'n 7 when it is desired to remove the chock. 1
lever 13 is also arran ed upon'block 12 so as to enwhen it is necessary to exert pressure in order to remove the chock. This lever terminates at its outer free end in a handle 14, and at its inner end is provided gage wheel with an angularly bent portion 15 having a is supported in clip 18, as shown in Fig. 3,
the arm 16 will be out of'engagement with wheel A, but when lever 13 is swung upon the pivot provided by the ortions 15 of said lever the curved arm 16 wi be forced against the wheel A, as shown in Fig. 1, for urging block 2-outwardl tension of spring chock from engagement with the wheel so that the chock may be removed.
Various changes may be made without defrom the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is: v 1. A chock including spaced blocks, means for yieldably drawing said blocks toward one another, and a lever arran ed to force said blocks away from one anot er. 2. A chock including spacedblocks, means for yieldably drawing said blocks toward along rod 3 against the and thereby releasing the Q; J menses one another to engage a wheel, and a lever other of said blocks received through said pivoted on one of said blocks and having an. sleeve, and a spring on said rod secured at am arranged to engage said wheel when .its respective ends to the respective blocks. 10 said lever is actuated for forcing said block In testimony whereof l have signed my 5 away from said wheel and the other block. name to thisspecification.
3. A check including spaced blocks, a
sleeve on one of said blocks, a rod on the BRUCE E. SKILES.
