' Application filed 'J'unefl,
To allw hom itmay concern Be it known that I, GEORGE H. Dnnonn, a
citizen of .the- UnitedfStates, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Finger Guards for Printing Presses, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates toaguard'to be associated with a printing press to bar theintroduction of the fingersof' the operator into the path of a" moving part when thepress is in operation. y e
In my application, Serial No. 891,314, of even date herewith, I have described-and broadly claimed a devi'cefor accomplishing this-general purpose.
The present invention accomplishes the same result by mechanism so constructed that the guard member, wh-ile controlled by a swinging'lever which is in turnsubject to a releasable detent, slides to and from barrier position, instead of swinging through an arcuatepath defined by the radius action 25 of the lever and guard together, and there fore occupies a smaller area inits action and better adapts the device for embodimentwith dimensions. appropriate-to larger types of presses.
In the accompanying drawings- Fi ure 1 is a front-elevation' and Fi ure 2 a side elevation of portions or a known type. ofprinting press with which the pres ent invention is immediately concerned.
'1 represents the bed, and .2. the platen which is moved to and from the bedin a pressof known construction; the platen beingmovedby any suitable means, such, for instance, as the drive wheel 3 periodically thrown into driving relation with shaft i and its fly wheel 5 through any suitable means, such, for instance, as a releasing handle orlever 6. v
In. order to prevent the introduction of the fingers of the operator beneaththe platen 2, aguard member 7 is mounted to. assume barrier position in relationtothe space beneath said platen, and this barrier is preferably in the. form. of an apron or" sheet metal. or other suitable material pivoted at 8; upon a controlling lever 9, which is inrturn pivotedat. 9 upon a fixed support softhat by swinging to bring the pivotal. aint; a dfthe guard, member 7'belo'w itsfizied pivot-9, said lever. will present the r ATENT- iorr ca..1
or oA'K rAnK, iLLINOIS, AssIe-Non' mammal-a man a7} Specification of Letters iPatent; I
and it is held against this guide by means of the springlO anchored at 10? upon the fixed pintle 8, and bearing a-tlO against the guard member in the direction to yieldingl-y' urge the guard member against-theguide,
a When it isdesi-redto withdraw the guard 5 member from barrier ;posi'tion,';; as, for: instance, when it is necessaryto change the-. die' or printing. form, lever 9 isswung to the dotted line position of Figure 2 to cause its detent 11- to catch overthe resilient-arm 1-2, a
where the lever will be held with the guard member presented in. the position rem'ote" from barrier ,positionuntildwork upon the press is to be resumed-.;;; To avoidoversight in returning the gua'rd'memberito barrier positiomthe arm 12 iscarried' by orother wise. connected-with the lever- 6, so that in starting'the machine theguard will be. automatically released.
the lever 9 and; the guard 7 will assume barrier-position by gravitation whenever. re leasedfrom the detaining arm .12, itis not necessary that they be so arranged and 'Whi-le in' the specificarrangement shown whether they are or not, itaispreferable to employ means such, for instance, as the spring 9 which, constantly urges the lever 9 in the directiontopresent.. the guard member in'barrierposi'tlon. This sprmgmay be conveniently. arranged upon the ,fixed pintle 9*? ofthe-lever with; one endanchored to said pintle and .the other end engaged over aportionof thelever. e i The guard member 7 willi -normallyassume a position sufiiciently closev to "the bed J l.to prevent introduction ofrthe fingers Lbee neath it while. admitting the card-pr.v other material to be printed, and will remain this position throughout 'th'eiprin'ting opera? am. Asmara-e1- safeguardphgrveyerfithe I guard member is made to yield outwardly from the printing position so that there will be no obstruction to prompt withdrawal otthe'fingers in case they should; engage with the lower edge of the guard in withdrawing the card. plished by the outward swinging of the entire guard member upon its pintle 8 in opposition to its spring 10, but preferably the lower portion of the guard member is made to yield independently of the outwardly swinging movement of the guard member as a whole, and to this end said lower portion is provided with the pivoted gate 13 which will not swing past vertical-position inwardly, but is free to swing from vertical position outwardly. This gate will also yield outwardly in case the fingers are in the path of theuard member while sliding toward barrier position.
15 represents a handle through which to manipulate the guard. 16 is a stop mounted on thepress in position to receive the pin 17 carried by the lever 9 and arrest the latter when the guard member reaches barrier position. The outer end of the stop 5 may carry an adjustable head 18 for regulating the position at which the lever 9 is arrested and since the lever and guard member are so connected as to develop a toggle action, it is obvious that the angle of the lever 9 in its-arrested position will determine the lower limit of travel of the guard member and consequently the space left beneath the apron 13 for introduction and removal of the card.
