Applicatien filed October 4, 1921.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, Josi ri-i P. CoNNnLL, a citlzen of the United States, and resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Labels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to labels and more particularly tolabels intended for use in connection with smoking pipes; and h as special reference to the provision of a label suitable for cartonsor boxes in which may be packed any of a variety of styles or shapes of smoking pipes, the label being adapted for designatingithe characteristics of a particular style of pipe or pipes contained in given box or cartoir In the sale and handling of smoking pipes considerable difficulty is experienced by the trade in properlyidentifying and quickly determining the characteristics of the pipes as regards their style, make or price. Smoking pipes are manufactured in a variety of styles, forms or shapes and are packed and distributed in containers or cartons, each style or shape of pipe having parts made from differing materials, the bits being made, for example, from such a variety of materials as rubber, horn, celluloid, amber or The varying factors of style, make and material and the resulting varying factor of price of the pipe are sources of constant confusion to the distributing andretailing trade, difliculties bein constantly experienced in properly identifying and quickly ascertaining the exact type or types of pipes packed in a given container and in rapidly selecting the particular style and make of pipe demanded by a purchaser. It has therefore been found desirable to provide-a form of label universally adapted for or suited to containers in which may be packed any one or more of the numerous styles and makes of pipes, the labels bearing representations by which the characteristics of the pipes packed in a given carton may be fully ascertainable from a quick inspection of the label attached to the container, and a prime desideratum of my invention relates tothe provision of such a label.
One of the causes or reasons for the cenfusion hitherto existing in the distributing and retail trade lies in'the fact that numerous distributors and retailers are unaware of and generally unacquainted with the dif- Specification of Letters Patent. PatentediFeb. 14 1922 Serial No. 505,312.
ferent styles of pipes marketed and the different technical as well as trade names by which the pipes are known and-sold. Inorder to eliminate this cause for confusion it has been found desirable and my p esent invention aims to provide a label in which the various styles or shapes ofthe pipes manufactured and marketed may be illustrated on the label for ready inspectiomthe particular style or styles of pipes packed in a given container bein designated and visibly associated with thetechinal name or names of the designated pipes, this leading to a ready identification ofthe style of the pipe in the container not only, but resulting in instructing and acquainting the trade by constant association of style and name ofthe technical names by which-pipes are known and sold.
Theprincipal objects of my invention may therefore be said to include-,besides the provision of a label adapted-or suited for containers holding any of different types of' articles such as smoking pipes, the provision of a label in whichthe particular style or shape of a variety of styles of pipes and thename of the style ofpipes packed in a given container may be quickly ascerta'inable from a rapid inspection of the label; the further provision of a label in which the price of the, article may be designated in a novel manner on the label and in, which otherfacts and characteristics such as the, make of tnexpipe and the number of pipes contained'in a carton may be readily indicated and the general provision of a label adapted for a large variety of articlessuch as pipes whichshall at once be instructive and helpful to the trade and neat and attractive in appearance.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as many-hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the .elements and; their relation'one to the "other, as hereinafter particularly, described and soughtto be defined intheclaims, reference being had, to the accompanying drawings which show a preferred embodiment of my invention, and in which:
Figures 1 and 2 are views of the label v showing two of a variety of .usesto..which L the labelfmay be put. 5 V
As herei'nbefo'rereferred to, smoking pipes are'packaged in bulk in container-sand so sold to thetrad'e,.any givenpackage containing'any; one or plurality of a avariety of styles and makes of pipes. As pointed out,
a desideratum of my present invention is to acquaint the trade with the various styles orshapes of pipes manufactured and mar- 5 keted and to supply means for readily in dicating to a dealer the type or style and make of the pipe packaged in any particular carton or box. To this end I provide a label comprising a label body made of the usual sheet material and I provide a series of pictorial representations 11, preferably imprinted on the label body 10, the pictorial representations portraying or illustrating the various styles or shapes of pipes made and marketed by the manufacturer. In the label shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, 12 styles of pipes are illustrated, the pictorial representations 11 being spacedly arranged on the label to make a neat and attractive label dress. This design of label not only serves to inform the distributor and retailer of all the styles of pipes manufactured, but the label serves and is suited for packages or containers holding pipes of any particular style, the label therefore being of universal utility as applied to smoking pipes. The label is attached in the usual way to the carton or box containing the pipes and for the purpose of readily indicating to the dealer the particular style or styles of smoking pipes contained in any particular carton, the pictorial representation of the particular styl packed in a carton is marked in any desired manner with differentiating indicia. Thus, if the carton is to contain the style corresponding to the pictorial. representation 12, such pictorial representation is marked as with a star 13 or other suitable indicia on or within the outline of the pictorial representation 12.
It is further desired, as hereinbefore referred to, to generally acquaint and instruct the dealers as to the technical. name of the pipes marketed and of the particular style or styles contained in a given cart-on. To this end I provide the label preferably with a space 14- adjacent one of the corners thereof, in which space is inscribed a descriptive representation of the part cular style or styles contained in the given carton. Thus, if the carton should contain the style or shape of pipe known to the trade as the Poker, the word Poker. will be inscribed or imprinted as at 15 in the said space 14:. For further indicating the fact that the pictorial representation 12 and the descrip tivc representation 15 correspond, the space 14 may be supplied with indicia such as a star 16 corresponding to the star 13 within the outline of the pictorial representation 12. In this manner the dealer is at once advised of the name aswell as the style of the pipes in a container, enablinghim to handle the article in a more intelligent manner,in addition to enabling him to accurately and rapidly select a style of pipe called for by the purchaser.
For th purpose of indicating quantity or the number of pipes that may be packaged in a carton, I provide a second. space 17 located preferably at another corner of the label, and on the said space is imprinted the word Quantity, as shown at 18. Below the term or word Quantity may be inscribed or imprinted the number of pipes held in a carton, the label in Figure 1 being supplied with the numeral 100 designated as 19 to indicate that that number of pipes is packaged in the particular carton to which this label is attached.
It is further desired to provide the dealer with a ready means for informing him of the make of the pipe such, for example, as whether the bit is' ring mounted or flush mounted, or whether it is made out of rubber, horn, celluloid, amber, bakelite or'other material, and to this end I provide the label at the remaining corners thereof with one or more spaces 20 and 21 respectively, the said spaces being intended for an inscription of the trade number and trade name of the particular style of pipe packaged in a carton, the said trade name or trade number being a key as to whether the pipe is ring or flush mounted, or whether it is nade with a rubber bit, horn bit, etc., as well as denoting whether the pipe is finished natural, Italian or otherwise.
The pipes, due to the variety of styles and makes of manufacture, have different selling prices and to the end of supplying means for quickly designating in code the price of the pipes, I provide the label preferably with a central space 22 having preferably 'a. circular cross sectional area, the said space having any selected colored background, the selected color designating or denoting the price. Thus, for instance, a yellow back ground in the space 22 would denote a 25 pipe; blue a 50 pipe; red, :1 $1.00 pipe; green, a $1.25 pipe, etc. In Figure 1 of the drawings the central space 22 is designated as blue, the label shown in Figure 1 being thus adapted for a container holding 5 pipes. In the said space 22 may be imprinted or impressed the trade mark of the manufacturing concern, such trade mark being indicated at 23.
The label may be further provided with an advertising space for the inanul'acturing concern and to this end I provide the label with an elongated space 2 1 at the bottom thereof, in which is imprinted the name or style of the'manufacturer as, for example,
tended for attachment to a container in which an assortment of all the makes of pipes are packaged and to this end in the space i l of the said label the Word Assorted as designated at 25 maybe inserted. The other spaces on the label may be providcd with indicia or legends designating diiterent facts and characteristics 01 the pipes packaged in this carton, the quantity space 17 designating, for ample that 50 instead of 100 pipesare packaged in the container, the price space 22 indicating to the dealer that the price oi the assorted pipes contained in the carton corresponds to the color green,-and therefore amounts to $1.25. The spaces 20 and 21 may furtherbe suit -ably inscribed in noting the particular'm'ake and construction of the pipes.
The manner of making and using my novel label will. in the main, be apparent from the above detailed description thereof. It Will be further apparent that I have provided a label suited to containers or cartons holding any of a variety of styles or shapes of pipes, in which the various styles or shapes will be portrayed or illustrated on the label for the benefit of the dealer, and in which the style as Well as the technical name of any particular style or styles of pipes in a given container will be indicated to the dealer and perceivable at a glance from inspection of the label. It will be further apparent that the label provides a ready means for denoting other facts and characteristics of the pipes, such as quantity, make and price, and that all the representations on the label are so coordinated as to provide a label having the data neatly and instructively arranged, the Whole presenting an attractive dress for pipe containers.
While I have shown my device in the preferred term, it will be obvious that many changes and modifications may be made in the structure disclosed Without departing from the spirit of the invention, defined in' the following claims.
