Description

PATENT OFFICE.
CLYDE S. GORRIGAN, 0F NORWOOD, OHIO.
HOLDING DEVICE FOR DEEP-WELL MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 14, 1922.
Application filed September 4, 1920. Serial No. 408,119.
To (17/ Iv/mm- 1'! may concern lle it known that I, CLYDE S. CORIHGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwood. in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio. have invented a new and useful .llolding Device for Deep-\Vell Machines, of which the follmving is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in holding devices for all deep well machines that are lowered into the well by flexible, sustaining and power conveying cable, and known as motor advancing deep well machines on account of the fact that the motor is attached to the working parts of the machines and advances with it into the well. This holding device is provided with motor operated, link connected holding elements that will make rigid connection with the walls of the well, and prevent rotary or vertical motion with respect thereto when used.
First, as a fulcrum by any deep well machine performing work, such as boring, reaming, bailing, etc. :second, to hold a machine at a certain verti'al position, so that its working parts may be raised to the work at a predetermined rate of pressure third, to prevent slackening or tightening of the sustaining cable, from interfering with the operation of a. machine ;fourth :to act as a fulcrum to hold a machine in a certain vertical plane while its cutting elements are raised in that plane for making vertical side slots from the well, also while the cutting elements of a machine so held are raised to a horizontal plane and rotated in that plane as in making underground tanks and cisterns.
The holding device may be operated by the same power that operates the machine it holds, either electric, water or compressed air. The fulcrum member may be either the outside of a rod, or the inside of a casing and may be a part of the holding device or a part of the machine held by it.
With these and other objects in view, a preferred form of construction of the holding device is illustrated in the accompanying dawings, in which like numerals refer to similar parts throughout.
Fig. 1, a view of the holding device with reaming machine attached.
Fig. 2, a view of the holding device with deep well machine attached.
Fig. 3, a sectional View of the device with saw tooth holding elements.
Fig. 4, a. sectional view of the device with spike tooth holding elements.
Fig. 5, a. sectional planat Fig. :3.
Fig. (i, a sectional plan at -G Fig. 4.
The holding device primarily consists of a casing l, with a plurality of slots in the sides and interchangeable link connected holding elements 2 positioned therein. the length and shape of said holding elements, and the size and kind of teeth used, may be varied to suit the various materials which the well penetrates.
In the upper part of casing 1 is a motor 3, which operates a screw 4 to move the hollow push rod 5, by which spread links 7 are moved to force the holding elements 2 firmly against the sides of the well; adjacent to push rod 5 and operated thereby, is shunt circuit breaker 6.
Spread links 7 are pivotally attached to lugs S 011 push rod 5, and attached to holding elements 2 by slot and pin connections, they are provided with cushion springs 9, that are compressed after the teeth of the holding elements 2, have come in contact with the walls of the well, so that in case any of the earthy material is loosened,
the springs will force the teeth forward against the solid earthy material beneath.
Supporting links 10 are pivotally attached to lugs 11 on casing 1, and to the upper end of holding elements 2 as shown in Fig. 3. If holding means 2 are of the form shown in Figure at, guide lugs 12 are used to hold them in place when in closed position.
Centrally positioned in casing 1 is a hollow rod 13, held in place by top plate l and bottom plate 1*, it acts as a. hub to hold rod 5 and motor 3 in position, and also as a. passage way to lead power wires 14, and control wires 15, from the supporting cable 16 down past the holding mechanism to lugs 19 on the bottom of plate 1.
Handle 18, fastened to the top of easing 1, may be of any shape suitable for attaching supporting cable 16, power wires 14 lead direct from cable 16 to motor 3 and shunt circuit breaker 6, thence to lug 19 and to the machine held by this device, control wires 15 lead direct from cable 16 to lug 19 and to the machine held by this device, power wires 14 and control wires 15, are attached to lugs 19 so that there will be no strain at the point 17 where they leave supporting cable 16.
\Vhen the deep well machine held by this device is operated in a fulcrum casing 20, as
. shown in Fig. 1, said casing is attached to,
it is to perform work, and transmitted the required signal to the operator at the surface, he switches on the power current and operates motor 3 which moves rod 5 and links 7, thereby causing holding elements 2 to dig into the walls of the well and compress cushion springs 9, after which the head of push rod. 5 closes shunt circuit breaker 6, and shunts most of the power current to the machine held, but leaving sufficient power to produce enough torque in motor 3 to hold push rod 5 and holding means 2 in position, thereby preventing casing 1, and the fulcrum member attached thereto, from rotary or vertical movement with respect to the walls of the well, while the machine held thereby is exerting force to perform its work.
When the machine held has performed the required amount of work and operated the required signal at the surface, or at will, the operator may reverse the power current, the motors of the machine held reverse quickly and perform their closing operations before the slow motion of motor 3 on shunt current opens circuit breaker 6, then motor 3 operates quickly and draws holding elements 2 back to casing 1, so that the holding device and the machine held by it may be raised to the surface.
As I am not aware of any holding device,
of the character described, capable of holding all kinds of motor advancing deep well machines, that depend on electric or fluid power for operation, I claim this device as new and broadly patentable.
Having described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s 1.
