TEMPLATE.
APPLlcATloN msu Fia. 1. |919.
Patented Feb. 7, 1922*.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAROLD E. VROOMAN, OF SOUTH JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA.
TEMPLATE.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that HAROLD E. VRooMAN, a citizen of the United States of' America, residing at South Jacksonville, inthe cou nty of Duval and State of Florida, has invented new and useful Improvements in Templates, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a tool readily adaptable for the making of patterns and taking spilings on the circular work of the bow and stern of a ship. In the construction of wooden ships there are approximately fifty ieces of heavy timber used in the construction of the stern and these must be shaped and fitted very carefully. The invention is a tool which is readily adjustable by hand to make a template of the desired curve to which the timbers are to be cut and formed and this tool is constructed with a view to simplicity, durability and cheapness of manufacture.
The invention is illustrated and described in a specific embodiment to which, however, it is not to be restricted. The writer reserves the right to make such changes or alterations as the actual reduction to practice may suggest, insofar as such changes or alterations are compatible in spirit with the annexed claim. n
The same numerals of reference designate the same parts throughout the several figures of the drawing, wherein: Y
Figure 1 is a plan view showing the manner in which the improved tool is used, a portion of a ship the confirmation of which is desired being shown in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the invention in closed position. j
Figure 3 is a section onfthe line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the invention is shown as comprising a frame 1 which is long and relatively narrow, the frame being of such a shape that it is approximately square yin cross section. The frame is formed on one face with a longitudinalslot 2, this slot at the ends extending into the frame for approximately half of its thickness but extending all the way through the frame except at the ends, thus leaving a web portion at the ends which unite the two sides of the frame. Extending transversely through the frame so that they extend across the slot 2 at right angles thereto there are the slots 3,
Specification of Letters Patent.
these slots being long and relatively narrow and extending in the direction of the length of the frame and being positioned adjacent the upper longitudinal edge of the frame. Passed through these slots 3 there are the bolts 4 which are provided with threaded nuts to receive wing nuts 5, the latter all bearing against'one face of the frame with the heads of the bolts bearing against the other face of the frame. This is thought to be the preferable arrangement although each alternate bolt may be reversed in reference to the adjacent bolt,"so that certain bolts will have their heads on that side of the frame on which the nuts of the other bolts stand. v
A conformator blade 6 made preferably of metal, but flexible, is used in conjunction with the frame and it is operatively attached to the latter by means of arms 7. These arms 7 are also made preferably of metal and each is provided with a longitudinal slotl 8. The arms at one end are pivotally connected with the conformator blade 6 as indicated at 9 and the other ends are passed through the slot 2 of the frame, the bolts 4 in turn passing through the slots 8 in the arms.
Vhen the bolts 4 are loose, the arms may be moved angularly or longitudinally relative to the frame, or laterally because of lateral movement provided for the bolts 4 by the slots 3. Thus the conformator blade, when the arms 7 are loose may be set to any desired .contour-as shown in Figure 1, for example-whereupon the bolts 4 may be tightened byjscrewing the wing nuts 5 down against the frame 1. Thus tightening the bolts 4 serves to draw the two sides of the Patented Feb. 7, 1922.`

frame together when the arms 7 are firmly f gripped between them, thereby making it blade in this instance being allowed to assume its straight shape and the slots 3 permitting the adjustment of the bolts 4 so that the arms 7 may be wholly concealed within the slot 3. j
From the accompanying drawings and the above description, it is believed that a clear enough understandingof the invention is to Vbe had to render further description` un- The invention having been 'describedwhat Y isclaimed as new and useful is:
vIn a template, a frame formed with a me-k dial longitudinal slot extending transversely therethrough, a exible conformator blade,
arms pivotally connected` tothe conformatorL blade at various points in its length, the said arms.v being formed With longitudinal slots,
the said'iramey being further formed yWith narronT and relatively long slots crossing the HAROLD E. vRooMAN. Y
