HEADLIGHT FOR vnnrcms.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. '7, 1922.
Application filed February 1, 1521; Serial No. 441,0
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that-I, RAYMOND Vnnon, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Headlights for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to headlights for vehicles, and the object of my invention is to provide a powerful non-glaring projecting headlight for use on automobiles, trolley cars, and other vehicles provided with a suitable source of electric energy; a headlight from which the light rays will be emitted in the form of a cone, the topmost rays of which will be substantially horizontal when the device is in normal position; and which is provided with means whereby the light cone may be depressed so as to lie belowthe normal position; together with such other objects and combinations as may be hereafter set forth and claimed.
I accomplish my objects by means of a headlight arranged and constructed as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal section.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation with parts broken away.
The same numbers refer to the same parts throughout the views. 1
My improved non-glare headlight comprises a casing, 2, of any desired shape, but preferably substantially round in cross-section and parabolic in longitudinal section,
and provided with .raised portions, 20, adapted to be connected to the usual supporting brackets.
The inside of the casing, 2, is provided with some suitable dull, non-reflecting finish adapted to absorb rather than to reflect ahy light rays which may come in contact there with.
Near the rear end of the casing, 2, I provide suitable bearin wherein is adjustably mounted a back re ector supporting shaft, 3, to which the back reflector, 4, is fastened.
Ove the open end of thefcasing, 2, and fastened thereto in any suitable manner, is a face late, 5, the major portion of the lower half t ereof being an opening closed by a plate of glam, 11, through which the light rays are to be projected.
Formed on the inner side of the face plate and near the center thereof, is a shelf, 6, to which are attached the standards, 7 7 between which is adjustably mounted a suitable reflector, 8, carryin the electric lamp, 9, connected by suitab e .insulated wires, 10, to a source of electric energy.
In the upper half of the face plate, 5,1 preferabl form a concave recess, 13, ada ted to have mounted therein a low can le power electric light, 14, connected by suitable wires, 16, to a source of electric energy.
The recess,.13, is preferably provided with v a reflecting coating, and covered by a lens, 15.
The operation of my headlight is as follows:
Light raysv from the lamp, 9, which is preferably of comparatively high candle power, will be projected against the back reflector, 4, which will deflect the rays and cause them to be projected horizontally or downward through the glass, 11.
I do not wish to limit myself to the articular type or shape of reflectors illustrated in the drawings, as many modifications may be used without departing from the spirit of this invention. A different type of back reflector may be substituted for the reflector 4, as for instance one which will cause most of the light rays reflected thereby to travel substantially parallel to each other; and by usin a back reflector having a suitable curve surface. the ra may be deflected in almost any desired irection.
I claim:
A headlight for vehicles comprising a casing having a reflector adjustably mounted in the rear end thereof and means for adjusting said reflector from outside the eas- 1ng; a face plate over the open end of said casing and havin an opening through the lower half thereo saidopening covered by a sheet of glass, and a recess formed in the face of the upper half of said face plate; a shelf on the inner side of the face plate,
an electric lamp with a' reflector mounted above said shelf; and a second electric lamp mounted in said recess.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
RAYMOND VERCH.
