CASK HANDLER.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 30, 1920- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MATTHIAsivrA'rTHIAsEN, or SAN PEDRO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR or ONE-THIRD T0 RICHARD w. MARTIN AND ONE-THIRD To, THOMAS L. RODDA, OF SAN PED O.
CALIFORNIA.
T 0 all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, MATTI-IIAS MATTHIA- tsnrnla citizen of the United States, residing at San Pedro, in the county of LosAngeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Cask Handler, of which the foland broadly considered consists in providing the cask with a handle projecting from the chine thereof in the direction of the produced axis of the cask so that it can be used with great leverage to tilt, swing, turn and roll the barrel on one end with the perimeter;of' the opposite end of the cask or other object as a fulcrum and runner.
An objectof this invention is to provide means whereby the handling of barrels, hogsheads, and other casks, and the like, can be accomplished with greater ease than has heretofore been possible.
A feature of the invention is the application. to a hand spike of a band secured at right angles thereto near one end thereof, and adapted to fit around the end of the cask so as to practically provide the cask with a detachable endwise projecting handle which can be used with great facility for tilting the cask and rolling the same on its chine when tilted.
The invention is broadly new, basic, pioneer and primary with respect to the feature stated.
The invention may be applied with hand spikes and casks of different proportions and with one or more band members to the lever,
adapted to encircle the cask or other objects to which it is adapted.
Other features of the invention reside in the construction and the arrangement whereby the appliance is projected and made adjustable where such adjustment is desirable for fitting the appliance for use upon different size objects so that the same attachment may be applied to casks of different diameter.
Other objects of the invention are strength, simplicity, ease of adjustment and security of fastening theband at any adjusted position.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompany- CASK HANDLER. I
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb, 7, Application filed March 30, 1920. Serial No. 370,020. 7
ing drawing, the subjoined detail descrip-' tion and the appended claims.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the invention. Figure 1 is a side elevation of a barrel handler constructed in accordance with: this invention and applied toia barrel or other cask in position for handling the same. Dotted lines indicate a position of the barrel and handler while the barrel is beingmoved from standing position. I
Fig. 2 is a fragmental enlarged detail of the handle shown in F ig; 1.
Fig. 3isav fragmental cross-section-on line 5 f';
3 x Fig. 2.
Fig. a is a fragmental section of the band:
shown in Fig. 3 with the fastening unhitched. Fig. 5 is a fragmental. vertical sectlon on line 02 Figs. 2 and 3, looking to the right in zi:

The hand spikewhichforms a 1.... 1.-
may be of any suitable size, form and material and, as shown, is of some strong wood, as hickory or oak, and is provided upon one face with a retainer 2 in the form of a metal strap fastened to the hand spike lever 1; there being one of more transverse ways 3 formed between the reinforcement 2 and the body of the lever 1. Such way or ways may readily be formed by cutting one or more transverse grooves into the outer face of the lever before the strap 2 is secured thereto.
The strap 2 may be fastened to the lever 1 by any suitable means as indicatedby screws 4.
The band is an open hoop which may be formed of any suitable material; and in the drawings, comprises a metal strap corresponding to an open iron or steel hoop extendingthrough the way 3 cross-wise of the hand spike and provided with one or more slots 5 adapted to engage a catch formed of a lug 6 that is fastened to and projects outward from one limb 7 of the'hoop. The slots 5 are in the second or outside limb of the hoop.
The catch or lug 6 is formed as a hook extending outward from one terminal 7 of the strap 2, and when it is passed through a slot 5' it is free and extends toward the other end 8 of said hoop-iron.
Preferably the catch 6 is exactly equal in longitudinal and transverse dimensions to the slot 5 provided therefor and the spaces 9 d between the hook 6 and the limb or terminal 7, is sufiiciently wide to accommodate the thickness of the other terminal 8 of the band.
The way 3 between the retainer 2 and the body of the lever 1 is preferably wide enough to accommodate the two terminals as indicated in Fig. 3 so that when the parts are in the position thus indicated, the band is secured against removal.
The bands may be given a desirable flare as shown in Figs. 1 and 5 so as to snugly seat upon the barrel or other cask to be handled. f
1 In practice the operator will grasp the free end of the lever and swing the hooplike band or bands over the free end of the object to-be moved. .It thus gives a perfect hold upon said object and ha as powerful leverage as may be required, depending of course, upon the length of the lever 1 and thedepth of the band or bands upon the cask.
The lever preferably projects down below the band or bands in order to afford a fulcrum l0 to'bind .upon the object as shown in Fig. 1.
1.'A barrel handler comprising a hand spike, one or more transverse hoops slidably attached to said hand spike near the end thereof and means for adjusting said hoops ito fitxvarious sizes of barrels.
2. In a barrel handler, a hand spike provided near the fulcrum end thereof with one L A barrel. handler comprising a hoop.
adapted to encircle a barrel, a hand-spike extending at right angles to the plane of said hoop and being rounded so as to readlly turn in the hand of the operator as the bar-- rel isrolled. V
5. A barrel handler comprisingiahoop adapted to encircle a barrel, a hand-spike attached to said hoop and extending at-right angles to the plane of'the hoop, said handspike having a spherical knob on the end thereof adapted to readily turn in the handof an operator.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto-set my hand at Los Angeles, California, this 23rd day of March, 1920. p
