Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. '7, 1922.
Application filed December 2, 1920. Serial No. 427,707.
'cap of the hunter in such a position as to facilitate directing the rays of light toward the desired object merely by the movement of the head, and wherein the battery or source of energy for the light and the switch for controlling the same may be conveniently carried within reach to permit of flashing on or off as required; and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the drawing, wherein V Figure 1 is a view of the apparatus applied in the operative position as when carried by the hunter.
Figure 2 is a side view partly in section of the lighting unit and its means of support on the cap. I
Figure 3 is a front view of the lighting unit and the means of attachment with which the lamp casin is provided.
Figure 1 is a detai view in perspective of the strap and hanger plate for attachment to the cap band.
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view of the switch mechanism and means of attachment to the waist belt.
Figure 6 is a View of the battery unit.
The apparatus consists essentially of a light unit consisting in the construction illustrated of a lamp casing 10 provided with means for engagement with a band 11 by which it may be attached to a cap 12 or similar head covering, a battery unit 13 consisting of a casing 141 containing a plurality of battery cells 15, and a switch 16 consisting of a base plate 17 provided with means such as a loop 18 for engagement with the waist band or belt 19 and having a button loop 20 slidingly mounted in a slot 21 formed in a cover plate 22 for actuating a switch tongue 23 by which the circuit including the conductor wires 24 may be closed through the battery cells and the globe of the light unit. The battery casing is also preferably provided with a hook 25 for engagement with the belt 19 or other convenient portion of the wearing apparel of the hunter.
In the construction illustrated the lamp casing is provided with a bearing plate 26,
designed to rest upon the Visor 27, of the cap and is reenforced by a brace 28 con sisting of a looped wire or the equivalent thereof, and at the rear of the casing is a 29 for embracing a bracket plate 30 attached to a strap 31 preferably formed in sections with the members thereof hinged together as at 32 to conform to the curvature of the crown of the hat or cap, said bracket plate being provided at its upper edge with a forwardly directed flange or rib 33 to constitute a ledge upon which the loop 29 bears to steady the lamp casing and lnsure the movement thereof in conformity with the movements of the head of the wearer of the cap, the cap band 11 which is provided with a suitable adjusting buckle 34 being extended over the outer face of the bracket plate 30 and the projecting hinged extremities of the strap 31 and hence through the loop 29 to bind the lamp supporting means securely to the cap and yet provide for the convenient detachment thereof when not required. Y
It will be obvious that in practice the l lighting unit may be disposed in any desired position with relation to the cap, in so far as directing the light rays straight forward or to one side or the other, to suit the convenience of the operator and that when secured in place it will remain in a fixed position on the cap so that the light may be thrown upon any object which may be selected by the wearer as a guide in shooting{0r discovering game.
aving described the invention what is claimed as new and useful is A headlight for hunting purposes embodying a lighting unit having a casing prothe cap visor; and a brace consisting of a vvided with a rearwardly directed loop, a seclooped wire engaging the under surface of 10 tional jointed strap to conform to the curvathe casing adjacent the forward end and ture of the cap or hat crown, a bracket havingbearing contact with the said bearing plate carried by said strap and provided plate.
with a forwardly directed ledge for engage- In testimony whereof I afiix my signament by the loop, the casing being provided ture.
with a bearing plate adapted to rest upon RUSSEL E. JAMES.
