. Be it known that I, HAROLD NELSON, a

citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Taking In, Holding, and Paying Out Fishlines, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a device for taking in, holding and paying out trawl-, trotor other fish-lines, particularly deep-sea fishlines, having at intervals thereon short lines, snoods or leaders bearing the hooks. These lines are of great length and bear many of the snoods and hooks, and are set by paying them out from the vessel, lightly anchored, and marked and sustained by buoys. This operation, as well as the taking in and disposition of the lines offers substantial opportunity for difficulty, which it is the object of this invention to avoid, by providing means whereby both operations can be readily performed and whereby the line or lines when not in use will be kept in condition for instant service. The device comprises a reel having a portion to receive the main line or lines, and a portion over which the snoods or leaders are disposed laterally and provided at its outer region with a multiplicity of catches arranged in such manner as to receive the numerous hooks as they come, in the winding up of the line, and also adapted to permit the free escape of the hooks when the lines are paid out.

My invention comprises a convenient method of holding fish-lines in such a manner whereby they may be always held in readiness for use without danger of entanglement.

This device when in operation permits of a rapid disengagement of numerous fishlines from the reel directl into the water without the manual mampulation of the lines themselves, thus eliminating the possibility ,of the fish-lines, bearing the hooks, from becoming engaged and-entangled with one another. The unwinding of the lines on the reel may be accomplished by means of crank handles or may be operated by motor power. 7

Furthermore, the device may be permanently aflixed to a boat or vessel or may be suitably adapted thereto by means of movable supports or brackets whereby its easy Specification of Letters Patent.

removal from one'position to another on a boat or vessel may be effected.

In the accompanying drawings, illustratin the invention:

In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated for the purpose of making my invention clearly understood, a preferred embodiment thereof and certain modifications. It is to be understood that the construction illustrated is for the purpose of affording a clear understanding of my invention only, and that I may not be confined to the specific form or forms shown and described except as required by my claims, by which the scope of my invention is defined.

The device comprises a reel or drum 1 mounted rotatably in a frame or support 2, and adapted to be turned by means indicated at 3.

One portion 4 of the drum is adapted to receive the lines proper (marked a), and the other portion 5 is adapted to have the snoods or leaders I) trained across it, generally parallel with the axis. may be demarked or separated-by a rib 6, or otherwise, but this is not absolutely necessary. At the outer edge or margin of the portion 5 are catches 7, preferably arranged in parallel diagonal rows, or in equivalent manner, so that wherever a leader or snood is encountered in winding up the line it can be drawn substantially straight across the portion 5 and its hook c slipped beneath a suitably positioned catch. The catches are in the nature of tongues secured to the drum by fastenings 8 and projecting freely in proximity to the surface of the drum, in such relation that the hooks can be readily inserted and automatically disengaged, and held with sufficient security. In this connection, the form of the catches marked 7 simply converge with the surface of the drum, so that the hooks are held frictionally and resiliently; while the form 7 a is shaped so as to provide impositive locking pockets 9 and yielding throats 10.

comprising a reel or drum adapted to afford a portion to receive the main line or lines and a portion across which the snoods are disposed, and having at the outer region of the latter portion a multiplicity of catches adapted and arranged to receive the hooks and automatically release the same, substantially as described.

A device for taking in, holding and paying; out fish-lines of the kind described comprisin a reel or drum adapted to afford a portion to receive the main line or lines and a portion across Which the snoods are disposed, and having at the outer region of the latter portion a multiplicityof catches 15 adapted and arranged to receive the hooks and automatically release the same, said catches being arranged in parallel diagonal rows, substantially as described.
