INVENTUR flue/v E N161:
WITNESSES A TTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE noon 1*. museums, or NEW YORK, N. Y. I
LOOK m. mnuc'rron coILs.
Application filed July 29,
the same being in the nature of an improve.
ment over my co-pending application for a similar device filed December 16th, 1919 and bearing Serial N 0. 345,290.
My former application broadly contemplated in combination with a coil box containing a number of induction coils and a cover, a means normally adapted to asume an inactive osition and capable of engagement with tlie vibrators of the coils to render their function inactive, said means being arranged on the cover-to coincide with the coils arranged within the box to permit manipulation thereof without the necessity of opening the coil box cover.
An object of this invention is to improve the construction of the means employed for this purpose and at the same time combine therewith a means for locking the first means in active positionto render the function of all of the coils inactive whereby to provide in effect an anti-theft device in connection with the testing device.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which is in the nature of an attachment, capable of application to standard coil'boxes without the necessity of resorting to material changes in their construction.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which is extremely simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture and produce and which is thoroughly reliable and highly eflicient for the purpose for which it is intended.
With the above recited and other objects in view, some of which will be more apparent hereafter, reference is made to the following detailed description, the appended claims and the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, which Specification of Letters Patent.
state of New York, b
Patented Jan. 31, 1922. 1920. Serial No. 399,684.
illustrate an example of one embodiment of the invention. In the drawings: Figure l is a front elevation of a coil box equipped with the attachment, parts being roken away to disclose the underlying structure. Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof in section."
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of one of the detachable supporting standards for thelocking device.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary detail perspective of one of the vibrator blocks.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 10 designates a coil box of standard construction provided with the attaching flanges 11 at the rear thereof for securing the box to the dash board of a vehicle. A plurality of induction coils 12 are arranged in the box and correspond in number to the number of spark plugs in the ignition system. The colls are each provided with a core 13 and a vibrator 14 superposed with respect thereto and supported from a binding post 15. The vibrator is provided with the usual contact point 16 which is designed to be arranged in confronting relapartly tion to a contact point 17 on the adjustmentlever 18, supported from a binding post 19 at one end and adjustably associated with a threaded post 20 at its opposite end. The cover 21 of the coil box 1s slightly modified to carry the testing and locking device by providing the same with a plurality of transverse slots 22 corresponding in number to the number of coils. The cover adj acent each of said slotted portion is provided with a raised boss 23, which is V-shaped in cross section as illustrated clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The cover is ?further pro vided with a plurality of slits having the material adjacent thereto pressed upwardly to provide stops 24 disposed in transverse alignment with the slots 22.
The means for actuating each of the vibrators 14 to render the function of its respective coil inactive, comprises a vibrator actuating block 25 constructed of bakelite or any other suitable insulating material and a push button 26 pivotally connected therewith which extends through the slot 22 in the cover and affords means for actuating the same without opening the cover 21. The actuating block 25 is provided with a central recess 27 which straddles the adjustment lever 18 when properly positioned. The lower surfaces of the block lying in either side of the recess 27 are provided at their extreme outer ends with depending lugs 28 having inclined lower surfaces disposed at an angle to the major portion of the block. A pair of leaf springs 29 are respectlvely secured to the under inclined surface of the lugs at one end and are secured at their opposite end as at 30 to the cover 21 at the uncture of the front and top wall thereof. The upper surface of the block is provided with an upstanding lug 31 having trunnions 32 projecting from the opposite sides thereof.
The push button 26 is provided with a shank conslsting of a pair of identically formed sections 33 which are apertured at their free ends to receive the trunnions 32 whereby the button is pivotally associated with the actuator block. The shank sections of the button operate through the slots 22 in the cover and by this arrangement it will be seen that by depressing the end, one or a number of the push buttons 26 against the action of the leaf springs 29, the corresponding vibrator 14 will contact with the core 13 of its induction coil thus rendering the function of said coil inactive for the purpose of testing the ignition system. When'the buttons are released, the leaf springs 29 will function to return the same to their normal position throwing the actuator blocks 25 out of engagement with the vibrator. In this positlon the angularly disposed portion 34 of the shank sections will be received and embraced by the V-shaped boss 23.
The locking device formlng a feature of the invention, constitutes a means for 'depressing and locking all of the actuator buttons and blocks to render the function of all of the coils inactive, whereby to prevent operation of the vehicle by an unauthorized person. To this end use is made of a yoke consisting of side arms 40 connected by an angular embracing member 41 at its upper ends, said member being formed of a single piece ofmaterial bent upon itself to provide a horizontal wall 42 and a vertical wall 43 having at its free edge a flange 44. The opposite ends of the top wall are bent downwardly to form cars 45 which are riveted as at 46 to the side arms 40. The lower extremity of each of the arms 40 is apertured to receive a guide bolt 47 which passes through mechanism having a bolt 56 which is designed to engage the underside of the coil box when the lock mechanism is actuated. By this arrangement it will be seen that the extremities of the corresponding side arms 40 of the yoke and side argns 51 of the U- shaped strip are connected for simultaneous movement.
In operation of the locking device, when it is desired to secure the coil box whereby to render the ignition system inoperative, the key is inserted in the key actuated locking mechanism 55 to project the bolt 56 thereof against the bottom of the coil box which will in turn exert a downward pull on the yoke through the medium of the connection of the side arms 51 to cause a simultaneous depression of the actuator keys 26. As the flange 44 of the embracing member 41 contacts with the upper wall of the cover 21, the same will be disposed behind the stops 24. This will effect contact of all of the vibrators 14with the cores 13 of their respective cores to render the ignition system inoperative. When it is deslred to test the ignition system, the yoke when in raised position is swung due to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed and by variations in the phrasing of the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with the coil box of an ignitlon system, of means carried thereby for respectively testing and locking the ignition system comprising independently operable elements, means to bias said elements to a given position and to permit movement to another position for selectively short circuiting the coil, and adevice for simultaneously locking said elements in a position to short circuit the coils.
2. The combination with the coil of an ignition system havin a removable cover, of means carried thereby for respectively testing the system and locking the same against operation, comprising independently operable elements, means for causing said elements to normally assume an inactive position and to permit of movement of the same to active position for selectively short circuiting the coils of the system, and a device for simultaneously looking all of said elements in their active position for rendering the system inoperative, said device also serving as a means for locking the cover of the 001 box in closed position.
3. In an ignition system including a number of induction coils, a coil box in which said coils are arranged and a cover therefor, the combination therewith of independently operable elements arranged adjacent to and adapted to coact with the vibrator element of each coil for short circuiting the same means for normally efiecting movement oi said elements to an inactive position, means on the cover for manipulating said elements with the cover closed, and a device for simultaneously locking all of said elements in a position for short circuiting the coils to render the system inoperative.
4. In a coil box containing a number of induction coils and having a cover, the combination therewith of independently operable means arranged adjacent and adapted to coact with the vibrator element of each coil for short circuiting the same, means for normally effecting movement of said elements to an inactive position, means on thecover for manipulating the elements with the cover closed, and a device for simultaneously looking all of said elements in their active po- I I sitlon for short circuiting all of the coils,
said device also serving to lock the cover of the coil box in closed position when the elements are locked in active position.
5. The combination with the ignition system of a motor including a number of induction coils having vibrators and arranged in a coil box provided with a cover, of independently operable elements arranged adjacent and adapted to respectively coact with' the Vibrator of each coil for moving the same to a position to short vcircuit the coil, means for normally moving said elements to an inactive position, means on the cover for manipulating said elements with the cover closed, and a device adapted to embrace the coil box and cover and coact with the latter means for simultaneously locking the elements in their active position and the cover of the coil box in closed position, as and for the purpose specified.
6. The combination with a coil box having a removable cover, a number of induction coils arranged therein, each of which is equipped with a vibrator, of independently opera 1e elements adjacent each coil adapted to shift the vibrators thereof to a position to short circuit the coil, means for normally moving said elements to an inactive position, an actuator for each of said elements extending through the cover for manipulating the same with the cover in closed position, and means adapted to embrace the coil box and cover and engage the actuators for simultaneously looking all of said elements in their active position and for holding the cover in closed position.
7. A testing and locking apparatus for the ignition system of an internal combustion motor, the combination with the coil box thereof having a number of induction coils therein and having a cover, of a plurality of fingers engageable with the vibrator elements of said coils for moving the same to a position for short circuiting said coils, means to bias said fingers to agiven position and to permit of their movement to another position, actuator buttons conneoted to said fingers and extending through the cover to afford means for independently manipulaing the fingers, a yoke embracing the cover and the sides of the coil box, and means for drawing said yoke into engagement with the manipulating buttons and locking the same in such position to simultaneously move the vibrator en age- Ihent fingers to a position to short circuit the coils for rendering theignition system inoperative and for holding the-cover in closed position.
