This invention relates to sponge-cups andv more particularlyy to sponge-cups usedin oiiicesl and banks for the purpose of facilitating thev handling or counting of paper sheets or paper money.
@ne ofthe main objects vof the invention is to provide a sponge-cup in which the overflowing of the water out of the cups, as often occurs in cups as used at the present, is eliminated. such an improved cup of very compact and reduced dimensions in relation to the size of the sponge used. A further object/is to provide a cup of cheap manufacture in which all parts are'so shaped and proportionedl as to enable the cup to vbe formed. in a mold of simple construction. Further objectsor advantages will appear from the following le scription and from the drawings which form part of this application forjL'etters Patent. In the drawings l? l is a top plan View of the device constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional'elevation taken o line 2 2 Fig. l. c .l A'
VFig. 3 is asectional elevation taken on line 3 3, Fig.. l, showing` a sponge as applied. Y
rlhe device whichmay be madeof glass, porcelain, or any other moldable andwater proof material, is preferably made circular and consists of a body 1 havingv a circular depression orV cup 2. of suitable size and depth; the wall 3 formed by this depression has its top so shaped asto form two concentric edges or rims d and 5, separated by the groove 6. The bottom of the latter is not level but is formed so as to present two high points and two low points so disposed that the'high and low points will be respectively diametrically opposite eachother. ln the inner edge 5,1and at'points corresponding to the lowest' levels of groove 6 the cuts or slots 7 with sloping bottoni 8 are provided for the piirposeof draining the water Another object is to provide d Specification of Letters Patent. fV Patented J V17.9212. i
in thegroove,backgintothe cupi4 2,'wherein .the sponge 9 is loca-ted. A f Y 1W hen it is desired to use the device, the
spongel is saturated with-water until the latter reaches approximately the'bottom of the drain slots 7. As will be experienced, 1 the pressure exerted bythe linger'sfto be moist'ened, willcompress the spongeV sufli- 'ciently' llgforce a certainamount ofthe water retained in the upper part yof the sponge to oo'ze out and over-flow outside of the first ledge. Inthe ordinary sponge-cups, as now f generally used, thisnaturallyvresults in the f waterl spilling over the border and ,creating unsightly poolsiiponthe desk, or perhaps even damaging important documents which Vmight happen lto be in thefvicinityof the Y sponge-cup. I incidentally, these all too frequent occurrencesy are oftenv the cause of much valuable time. and'oiiice material being wasted in cleaning and repairing the damage done by them.` In my" invention this. danger due to the overflow of water isfdone 'away with by the use ofthe outeredge which,
for greater precaution,- is made' somewhat.v
`higher than the inner edge.- The expressionV of water from` the sponge bythe lingers of course notprevented yin my device butr water being drained by the inclined Referring to the drawings it will be seenthat the walls, edges andcuts are so 'tapered as to allow the ci'ipsbeingformed and drawn outof the mold directly,'*without requiring` the settingv and removal'of loose pieces or Y collapsible-mandrels. `This` labor saving fea- Y ture of myf invention 1s of great importance f especially lwhenconcerning articles which.
arey to be producedy in great quantities. Furthermore, the width'of thedraining groove 'may be' made relativelysmall without im-V pairing itscapacity for conducting the over-i flowing waiter, thereby obtaining a very compact device requiring but little space on va desk Vor counter.
'F rom the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying draw rings it will be apparentthat l :provide a sponge cup' possessing valuable and practi-` cal advantages v)over theV -kinds used. at present, and of very cheap and simplel manufacture.y As willrbef easilyV understood there v maybe made slight Vchanges in they design of Lthe cup, such as makingV it polygonal instead of circular, and I do not wish to limit myself to the i''orin described above except l as 'set forth in the claims hereuntov appended.
What I claim as new and desireto secure Y by Letters Patent is 1. As an article of lmanufacture7 a flat tween possessing a plurality of high and low l 3. As an article of manufacture', a sponge level points; the level points of equal depth being diametricallyopposite.
cup having two concentric rims at Vthe top of-its side; theiiiner rim being of lesser height than the outer rim; a drainage groove therebetween possessing a plurality of high and low levelvpoints, the level points of equal.
depth being diametrically opposite, and
apertures provided in the inner rim atpoiuts 25 corresponding to the low level points oaf said rgroove, substantially as described, i ,Y
l'n testimony whereof i; my signature.
