Description

LOUIS GIEBRICH, OF OTTUMWALIOWA, ASSIGNOB TO KAROIINA GIEBRICH AND JGHN ERBACHER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT AIN ENVELOPESs Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,496, dated July 1, 1873; application lld May 1o, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:l
Be it known that I, LoUrs Giannina, ot' Ottumwa, in the county of Wapello and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Envelopes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, olenr, and exact deseription of the construction and operation ot' the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making apart of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. Y
The lig-ares of the drawings show representations oi' my safety-envelope during folding.
This invention has relation to the const-ruction of safety-envelopes; and it consists in the peenliar formation and arrangement of the front und back sealing-laps, and the slits. of the main wall of the envelope, through which they are passed before sealing. Y i
In the accompanying drawings, the letter Adndieates the blank, which, when folded, as indicated in Figures 1 and 2, forms an enve= lope with two pockets, of which the inner one next the back eannot. be reached without de' stroying the envelope, and the outer one nextthe face or address is very nearly as safe. 0n the flap a is formed a narrow tag, b, which is designed to be provided with adhesive substance on its outside face. 0n the edges of the back of the envelope e are provided reetangulardaps d, having also narrow tags b, the apsd heilig dextrined on their inner faces, and the tags b on their outer faces. In the middle of the back c of the envelope an angular slit, e, is eut in such a manner as to` separate by ree of its edges a lap, l, of simlaps provided.
ilar forin to the tag b of the lia-p a, Similar slits are out through near each end of the face or address wall d of the envelope, and similar In folding this envelope, the ends h of the middle or dividing Wall ic ot' the two pockets are rst folded toward each other. Then this` middle wall with its ends is folded up against the back e ot'4 the envelope, a strip, z, being sometimes, for greater security, pasted by its ends across the slit e and lap l in the middle of said back. The face d is now folded down ou the partition-wall 7c, the tlaps d sealed to the ends of the address-Wall by their adhesive inner surfaces, and the tags b of said flaps by their outer surfaces to the under faces of the laps l of the address-wall d. Finally, the lia-p e is folded down and sealed to the back c by its inner face. its tag bbeing sealed by its adhesive outer face to the under l of the back e.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A safety-envelope, having the lapl out in the body of the envelope to lit the tag l ofthe flap a, and provided with the back tag arranged'to pass through a suitable slit in the face of the envelope, or through the bend of the flap, substantially as specified.
In testimony 'thatl claim. the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
' LOUIS GIEBRIOH. Witnesses:
