To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES (i. HAMiLToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful improvements in .Shoe-Polishing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a polishing machine adapted for polishing shoes. 1t is the object of the invention to provide a polishing wheel, the operation of which is controlled by coin actuated mechanism. It is a further object of the invention to provide in combination with suoli a coin controlled polishing wheel ready means for applying polish to shoes in order that they may be subsequently polished upon the polishing wheel of the machine.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a machine constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Fignre 3 is a detail plan view of the handle for the machine.
The machine comprises a base 1 having a bearing casing 2 at one end thereof and a casing 3 at the opposite end of the same, the casinf1V 3 housing a second bearing and also the operating mechanism for the polishing wheel. 1f desired, the base 1 may be extended to any desired length to form a polishing machine adapted to accommodate several users, in which case an intermediate casing 2a having a bearing is also mounted upon base 1. The polishing wheel consists of shaft 4 extending lengthwise of base 1 and journaled in bearings 5 within the casings. One or more spools 6 having a central enlargement 7 and end enlargements 8 forming recesses 9 between enlargement 7 and the respective enlargements 8. The respective recesses 9 are adapted to form polishing means for shoes of different colored leather, black and tan for example. The spool 6 is covered with a suitable covering` 10 of a fabric which will impart a polished surface to the shoes and the recesses and enlargements of said spool are so arranged as to form a surface against which all parts of the surface of a shoe may be conveniently brought for polishing the same.
The actuating mechanism forv rotating the polishing wheel is housed within the4 casing 3 and consists of an electric motor 11 having a suitable driving connection to the shaft 4v. In the present instance this driving connection comprises pulleys 12 and 13 upon the shaft of the motor and upon the shaft 1-, respectively. A usual belt 14 passes over these pulleys.
A supporting post extends upwardly from base 1 to provide means adapted to be grasped by the person whose shoes are being polished in order to steady the person when one foot is lifted from the ground and the shoe brought into engagement with the polishing wheel. lhen more than one spool 6 is provided a post is positioned opposite each spool, preferably at opposite sides of the polishing wheel. The supporting means comprises an upright post 16 eX- tending upwardly from a suitable bracket 17 upon base 1. At its upper end the post is provided with a cross handle 18 having the hand grips 19 arranged to be grasped by the hands.
Suitable coin controlled mechanism is provided in connection with one of the supporting posts, by means of which the current to the motor 11 is controlled. This coin controlled mechanism may be of any usual or preferred construction, preferably mounted within a casing 2() upon one of the posts 16, and since the details of such mechanism form no part of the present invention the construction of the same is not shown, The mechanism is controlled by a coin deposited in a slot 21 preferably arranged upon the top of handle 18 and the mechanism actuated by the coin is adapted to release a push button 22 also arranged upon handle 18, so that said push button may be manually actuated for closing the circuit through wires 23 leading to the motor 11. The motor may be supplied with current from any suitable source of electrical energy as by means of the wire cord 2-1 leading into casing 3.
Upon the top of casing 3 suitable receptacles 25 for polish may be positioned, and a shoe stand 26 preferably also extends upwardly from casing 3 in order to support the shoe while polish is being applied thereto. Daubers 27 for applying the polish may be conveniently suspended from suitable hooks 2S depending from a handle 30 carried by a rod projecting from casing 3.
It will be observed that the construction as thus set forth provides convenient means 'for applying polish to shoes and then polishing the same upon the polishing Wheel. It will be further observed that the supportingv upright forms a convenient means by which a person may steady himself While polishing his shoes, the supporting upright also carrying the slot and push button for the coin controlled actuating mechanism which controls the supply of current to thel motor ll.
It will be apparent that various changes may be made in the construction as thus described Without 'departing from the spirit 15 of the invention as claimed.
Vliat is claimed is:
A polishing mechanism including a rotat able shaft, a plurality of polishing members thereon arranged to be utilized by different 20 persons standing at opposite sides of the shaft, and supporting uprights for the different persons extending upwardly at opposite sides of the shaft.
