Specification of Letters-Patent t n J 1922 Application filed April 27, 1918. Serial No. 231,163.
with a suspending device for holding the object to be treated in the metallic bath while it is being subjected to the electrolytic action, the said device being in the form of a clamp consisting of a plurality of metallic plates between which the object to be treated can be directly supported and connected with the negative pole of the battery forming the cathode, the silver, nickel, copper etc., being suspended in any suitable well known manner and connected with the positive pole of the battery, (the anode), the object of the present invention residing in the con-' struction'of a clamp in which the electrolytic action can be accomplished by direct conduction and with an elimination of undue time and labor and also with an appreciable saving of materials.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangements of parts which will hereinaifter be fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, has been illustrated, several preferred forms of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitations are necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
Figure 1 is a front view of my improved suspending device and clamp.
Figure 2 is a section therethrough taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 with parts in full lines.
Figures 3 and 4 are views similar to Figure 2 showing slight modifications of the invention;
The invention comprises a suitable supporting hook 5 adapted to be suspended from the usual supporting wire, not shown, which is arranged in. the customary manner above the metallic bath and as illustrated said hook is provided with a suitable handvhold 6. by means of which same can he quickly applied to or removed from the wire as the occasion necessitates. The said hook is provided with. a shank 7 to which the relatively attenuated branches8 of copper or metallic clamping jaws 9 are secured.
The said branches 8 may be detachably connected with the shank 7 by providing bolts 10 which are designed. to be passed through the shank .7 and associated withthe branches 8 of the clamping jaws a'sherein illustrated. By interposing the shank 7 be tween the branches 8 of the mentioned clamping jaws the latter are capable of being moved or adjusted with relation to one another in order that the work or article to c be electro-plated can befirmly confined between said jaws. These jaws are provided with relatively long heads 11, which are adapted to come in fiat and continuous contact with the sides of said object to) be treated. In this manner and through the fact that the hook is connected with the negative pole of the battery circuit a good electrical connection is established between the clamp and said plate or article to be electroplated.
I do not wish to limit myself to any precise mode of adjusting the jaws 9 into clamping relation to one another but for conventional illustration will make use of bolts 12,
the same being extended through the heads 11 as shown in Figures 1 and 2 whereby said heads may be brought into firm gripping contact with the sides of the plate or article to be electro-plated. Many obvious and well known devices can be employed lfor efiecting such relative adjustment of the mating jaws 99 as will be understood.
In Figure 3 the shank 18 is provided with a continuous jaw portion 14, while riveted at 15 to the shank is a mating adjustable jaw 16, the same being constructed of hard drawn copper. FiXedly supported from the movable jaw 16 is a stud 17 which pames through the jaw 14 and at one side of the latter and supported for swinging movement from the stud is an eccentric clamp 18 which, when adjusted to one position, will cause the two jaws 14 and 16 to be advanced toward one another. When the eccentric is adjusted to another position the jaws are free for separation. I prdfer to provide for an automatic separation of the respective jaws and find it desirable to rivet a spring 19 to the jaw 16 and extend the free end of the spring against the jaw 14 as herein illustrated.
In the form of the invention shown in Figure 4, the shank 20 is provided with an integral jaw 21 which is pivoted at 22. to a movable jaw 23. Said movable jaw is provided with a tail extension 24 and interposed between the shank 20 and said tail is a spring 25. In this manner the efi'ective gripping ends 26 of the respective jaws are normally advanced into gripping relation with one another. The tail 24 is prefferably'curved at 27 in order that the thumb of the oper ator can be readily placed thereagainst and sufficient pressure applied to permit of a relative separation of the effective gripping ends 26. r
Inthis manner of suspending the article to be treated the electrolytic action will arise by direct contact with the object to be treated; considerable time and labor can be eliminated and an appreciable saving of materials effected.
Each of the devices herein illustrated has its jaws provided with gripping spurs 28 adapted to engage with the work.
What I claim as new is:
A device of the class described comprising a semi-circular supporting hook provided with a shank having spaced openings therein, a T-shaped handle extending from said hook, a pair olf elongated horizontal clamping members disposed in a plane at right angles to said hook and having spaced aligned openings formed therein, parallel attaching members extending at right angles from one edge of said clamping members and provided with spaced openings in alignment with the openings in said shank, a plurality of bolts passing through the openings aforesaid and a plurality of nuts engaging said bolts.
In testimony whereof I aifix my si nature.
CARL o. wfLLE.
