L. TURCO.
PLATE OR RECEPTACLE LIFTER.

PLATE 0R BEGEPTACLE LIFTER.
Application filed September 25, 1920. .Serial 1 To.,412,682.
T 0 all 10 tom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, Luis Tnnco, a subject to the King of Italy, residing at Frankford, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plate or Receptacle Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provlde a lifter for use in lifting receptacles, plates or other articles, the lifter being particularly adapted for readily lifting articles such as plates and receptacles which may be too hot to touch with the fingers or in cases where for the purpose of sanitation it is desirable to have the articles picked up or carried about without having them come in contact with the hands.
Among other features the invention comprehends a lifter which consists of few and simple parts so arranged that they cannot readily get out of order, the simplicity of construction also providing for a lifter that can be mad at a very little cost.
1n the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of ref erence denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken through the lifter;
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 in Figure 1 Figure 3 is av longitudinal sectional view taken on the lin 3--3 in Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the views I provide a handl 10 which is substantially hollow and preferably consists of two sec tions 11 connected by a cross pin or bolt 12. One end of the handle 10, when the sections 11 are connected, is closed and the other end open and extending from the open end are tongs 13 each of which includes an enlarged apertured portion 1 1- lying just within the handle and mounted to swing on the cross bolt 12 which passes through the apertures of the enlarged portions. The inner end of one of the tongs is formed with an S shaped extension 15, an edge of which near its extremities bears against the inner wall of the handle 10 and the other tong has the inner end formed into a shank 16 which at its extremities is fashioned;
into a right-angled projection 17 passing through an opening 18 in one of the sections 11 of the handle to extend exteriorly thereof and receive a knob 19. An S shaped spring 20 is riveted or secured in any convenient manner to the extension 15 and; the other end of the spring bears against the inner end of the projection 17, thus serving to normally hold the extension 15 and shank 16 apart, causing the extension 15 to bear against the inner wall of the handle on one side and the shank 15 to bear against the inner face or wall of the readily grasped, lifted and carried with the lifter described, and that a litter of the character mentioned would be particularly applicable in hospitals and the like where it is desired that various articles be handled without having the hands come in contact therewith, the device also being adapted for use in the kitchen for lifting hot plates, dishes and pans, and it will be apparent from the foregoing description that the simplicity of construction and few parts involved in the makeup of the article provides for a lifter that cannot readily get out of order or become broken and which can be manufactured at a very low cost. Of particular note in. this connection is the means for connecting the handle sections, namely the bolt 12 and which not onlyserves to hold the two sections of the handle together but also acts as the pivot or mounting for the tongs, as will be clearly seen by referenc to the views.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A lifter comprising a handle including longitudinally opposed sections and having an open end, a cross bolt serving to hold the handle sections together, tongs mounted to swing on the cross bolt and extending exteriorly of the handle, an extension on the inner end of one of the tongs and lying within the inner end of the handle to abut against an interior wall thereof, a shank formed on the other tong and lying within the handle, a projection of the shank and I Specification of Letters Patent. ygmgnigfl Jan; 24,} 1%};22
extending exteriorly of the handle and a spring interposed between the extension and other tong and lying within the handle, a 1.0 the shank, and serving to normally hold spring interposed between the shank and them in spaced relation. the extension to hold the tongs in relatively 2. A lifter comprising a sectional hanopen position, and a projection on the shank 5 dle, a cross bolt holding the sections of and extending exteriorly of the handle.
the handle together, tongs mounted to In testimony whereof I affix my signa- 15 swing on th cross bolt, a shank projecting ture.
from one of the tongs and lying within the handle, an extension projecting from the LUIS TURCO.
