Description

M. S. CONNER.
TELEPHONE RECEIVER.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 31. 1913.
Patented Jan. 24,1922.
' UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIcE.
MERRITT SCOTT CORNER, OF ADELIPEI, SALFDRD, ENG-LAND.
' TELEPHONE RECEIVER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Mnnnrrr Soor'r Con- NER, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of 'Peel Works, Adelphi, Salford, in the county of Lancashire, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tele hone Receivers, (for which I have filed a p ication in Great Britain under date of uly 2, 1918, filing No. 13167, accepted under N o. 116201,) of which the following is a specification, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame.
This invention relates to improvements in telephone receivers.
The object of the invention is to enhance the clearness and efficiency of sound reproduction.
The invention consists in providing a.
shunt path in such relation to the pole pieces or polar extensions that magnetic flux induced in the pole pieces by sound currents in the coils will in large measure flow by way of'the said shunt path and thus lower the total reluctance and hysteresis losses of the apparatus and thereby improve the re-- production of speech.
The aid shunt path is provided in any suitable manner below the ends of the coils remote from the diaphragm. The reluctance of the path may be adjusted by an air gap placed therein or, by other suitable means.
Two examples of my invention are shown in the accompanying drawings,
Figs. 1 and 2 show parts of a telephone receiver, where A is the magnet whose polar extensions B carry the coils C in the usual way. Fig. 3 illustrates a modification of the shunt path. In Fig. 1 the lower cheeks D of the coil are of iron or other suitable magnetic material and have their adjacent Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed my 31,
Patented J an. 24, .1922. 1918. Serial No. 247,525.
iron pieces F as shown in Fig. 2 may be attached to the pole pieces B, with a definite air gap E between them, or the said pieces E may be adjustably attached to enable the a1r gap to be suitably adjusted.
Other means for obtaining the requisite degree of reluctance in the shunt path may be adopted without departing from the sco e of the invention, a for instance, the po e pieces may be joined by magnetic material of small enough cross section in any art to limit the flux to the desired extent.
As shown in Figure 3, the pole pieces B have metal extensions G, the ends of which are spaced apart and are connected together by a member H of reduced cross sectional dlameter in order that there may be magnetic reluctance to the members introduced in the pole pieces.
What I claim and desire to ters Patent is 1. A telephone receiver comprising a diaphragm, a pair of pole pieces,- a magnet, said pole pieces having lower extremities attached to the magnet, a pair of coils supported on the pole pieces with their upper ends adjacent the diaphragm and iron cheeks one at the lower end of each coil, said iron cheeks forming an air gap and magnetic shunt between their adjacent edges.
2. A telephone receiver comprising a diaphragm, a magnet, pole pieces having lower secure by Letextremities attached to the magnet coils with their upper ends adjacent the diaphragm supported on the pole pieces, and iron pieces connected to the pole pieces below the lower ends of the coils, said iron pieces forming an air gap and magnetic shunt between their adjacent edges.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
MERRITT SCOTT CONNER.
