PLATE-SECURING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 24, 1922.
Application filed August 19, 1921. Serial No. 493,517.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plate-Securing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates generally to the c0nnecting together of plates in edge-to-edge relation, my invention having been devised for use, more particularly, in the securing together of a plurality of plates on automobiles, as for example, and more especially, the securing of city license or le end-bearing plates, to state license plates, w ich as commonly provided are formed with marginal continuous beads on their outer faces.
My objects, generally stated, are to provide a novel, simple and inexpensive form of securing means for the purpose stated, which may be readily manipulated to firmly secure the plates together, which will not rattle, and the parts of which may not be readily lost in the event of the fastening means becoming loose.
Referring to the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a face view of two plates se cured together in edge-to-edge relation in accordance with my invention. Figure 2 is a section taken at the line 2 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow; and Figure 3,a perspective view of one of the similar clip-members employed.
It is customary to provide city-license and legendary plates with pairs of slots along C. HASS, a
their upper edges and oftentimes along both b their upper and lower edges, my invention, in the accompanying drawings, being shown as employed in the connecting of such a plate to a state license plate, the latter being represented at 4 and in accordance with common practice secured to a bracket (not shown) carried by the automobile. The other plate, shown as one displaying the name Chicago, is represented at 5, this plate containing along its upper edge the slots 6 s aced apart as represented and to which re erence has hereinbefore been made.
The plates 4 and 5 are each shown as of the type formed with continuous beads, in rectangular arrangement, on their outer 8, respectively.
The devices for securin the plate 5 to the plate 4 are provlded in uplicate, these devices being shown at 9 and each being in the form of a clip of general U-shapeproviding the arms 10 one of which is slightly shorter than the other thereof with its extremity deflected toward the longer arm as represented at 10. These clips may be formed of any suitable metahas for example cold rolled steel, t being preferred that they be formed of strips of metal bent upon themselves into the form shown. The arms of the clips are perforated between their ends, as represented at 11 and 12, to receive bolts 13, the nuts of which are represented at 18*.
In the assembling of the clips with the plates to secure the plate 5 to the plate 4,
the clips are introduced into the slots 6 to the position shown in the drawing wherem the clips extend in looped condition through these slots with the arms of the clips extending at opposite sides of the late 5, and the extremities of the arms strad ling the lower ed e of the late 4, the shorter arms of the c ips exten mgacross the front of the plate 4 and over the bead 7, the defiected portions 10 of these arms overlapping the upper edges of this bead and the rear ones of the arms 10 overlapping the rear side of the plate 4. With the clips thus assembled, the bolts 13 are tightened to draw the arms toward each other into tight clamping condition relative to the plates, both lates thereby becoming rigidly clamped to t e clips. It will be noted that by the use of the clips as stated and shown, the late 5 may e clamped to the plate 4, wit ease, and rattling of the parts is avoided. Further-- more liability in case of loosening of the clamping devices, is reduced to the minimum.
While the plate 5 is shown as attached to the plate 4 in depending position, it will be understood that the clamping devices are equally well adapted to the supporting of one late from another in a position above the atter in which case the plate which would be uppermost would require to be slotted along its lower edge Or the one beneath would have slots in its upper edge, to receive the loop-portions of the clamping devices.
While I have illustrated and described a particular construction embodying my invention, I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto as the same may of the parts becoming lost.
be variously modified and altered without de artin from the spirit of my invention.
at T claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: I
1. The combination, of plates extending in edge-to-edge relation, one of said plates 'containing a slot near the edge thereof adjacent the other of said plates, and a clip connectingsaid plates together, said clip being of general U-shape and extending at its closed end through said slot and at its arm-portions at oppositefaces of said slot ted plate, the arm-portions of said cli also extending at opposite faces of the ot er of said plates, and a device for holding said arm-portions in clamped relation to said last-referred-to plate.
2. The combination of plates extending in edge-to-edge relation, one of said plates containing a slot near the edge thereof adjacent the other of said plates, and a clip connecting said plates together, said clip bein of general U-shape and extending at its 0 osed end through said slot and at its arm-portions at opposite faces of said slotted plate, the arm-portions of said clip also extending at opposite faces of the other of said plates, and a device for drawing said end-portions into clamping relation to said last-referred-to plateand holding them in said position.
3. The combination of plates extending in edge-to-edge relation, one of said plates containing a slot near the edge thereof adjacent'the other of said plates, and a clip connecting said plates together, said clip bein of general U-shape and extending at its 0 osed end through said slot and at its arm-portions at opposite faces of said slotjacent the other of said plates, and said last-referred-to plate being provided with a head on its outer face, and a clip connect- I ing said plates together, said clip being of general U-shape and extending at its closed end through said slot and at its arm-portions at opposite faces of said slotted plate, the arm-portions of said clip also extending at oppositefaces of the bead-equipped plate, and one thereof overlapping said bead, said last-referred-to arm portion having a deflected part for interlocking with said bead, and a device for holding said arm-portions in clamped relation to said last-referred-to plate. v
5. A cli for the purpose set forth, comprising a member of general U-shape presenting a closed end and arm-portions, and a device engaging both of said arm-portions between the ends of said arm-portions adapting of the clamping of the clip to a plate beyond said device.
6. A clip for the purpose set forth, comprising a member of general U-shape presentin a closed end and arm-portions, one of said arm-portions being deflected at its extremity, and a device engaging both of said arm-portions between the' ends of said arm-portions adapting of the clamping of the cli to a plate beyond said device.
